Men asked if pregnant before x-rays

In the Telegraph today:

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/03/28/nhs-trusts-ask-men-pregnant-government-removes-word-female-guidelines/

Male cancer patients and those having X-Rays and MRI scans are being asked if they could be expecting after the Government removed the word “female” from the law governing the medical procedures and replaced it with “individuals”.
The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust, in Liverpool, now asks “ALL patients under the age of 60, regardless of how you may identify your gender”.

Identifying your own "gender" won't mean you're male or female. And replacing medically accurate language in this case, has the effect of erasing women. One man was reportedly upset:

"One woman whose husband has cancer says that the question before a scan had caused “unnecessary confusion and agitation” and was “unfair” as a combination of steroids and brain surgery had made him emotional.
She added: “This was very confusing for him in his post-surgical daze, his vulnerability and needs completely ignored.”"

It is not all trusts but this one doubled down:

"“We believe asking all people who are having their abdomen imaged/scanned in this way, regardless of gender, is the least intrusive way of ensuring it is safe to proceed.”"

Dept of Health not impressed, it seems!

"When asked about the change in language, a Department of Health and Social Care spokesman said: “Patient safety is paramount, especially when there is a risk that foetuses may be exposed to damaging radiation. Therefore, it’s important that all biological females of child-bearing age are screened for potential pregnancy to avoid this risk.”"

It's a continuing marvel how often this subject turns once competent professionals into looking like fucking idiots.

"The Department of Health updated the regulations regarding the procedures in 2017 and changed the wording surrounding those who should be questioned from “females of childbearing age” to “individuals of childbearing potential”

Individuals of childbearing potential remain female! Still doesn't justify asking all men.

GeneLovesJezebel · 29/03/2022 06:56

Unfortunately x-rays aren’t the only medical procedure where we have to ask this question now.

FannyCann · 29/03/2022 06:58

Here is the relevant twitter thread The Telegraph must have seen. In good news a neuro rehabilitation unit is committed to maintaining single sex provision.

Sex matters in health care for medical reasons. They need two boxes on paperwork... sex for medical reasons, gender for knowing how to address the patient.

KittenKong · 29/03/2022 07:11

If a supposed trained medical professional asked - I’d be wondering if it was candid camera or if they were some crank who’d stolen a white coat.

Bergamotte · 29/03/2022 07:21

If people are allowed to change the sex marker on their medical records, they need to ask everyone. Otherwise it puts the risk onto the healthcare professional who has to judge whether to ask the question or not.

lovelyweathertoday · 29/03/2022 07:28

If people are allowed to change the sex marker on their medical records,

I think you have spotted the flaw in the system.

ResisterRex · 29/03/2022 07:46

It's dangerous. Working it through, you could have a male who self-IDs as a woman and claims not to be sure if pregnant/says is pregnant. Then they don't do a scan, and then what? Someone dies?

If they could stop confusing sex and gender
If they could understand the fundamentals difference
Then they could respect anyone gender whilst not asking stupid irrelevant questions that respect some and harm others

baroqueandblue · 29/03/2022 07:58

If you refused to answer, would they deny you treatment? I won't support their dangerous agenda against biological women and girls by joining in with these charades Hmm

drspouse · 29/03/2022 08:00

It's going to be very upsetting for men with dementia too.

A patient lost a baby. They - for some reason - presented their self at a&e as a man when they were pregnant and the staff didn’t check the health of the baby.

How selfish do you have to be to NOT put your baby first in a medical emergency?

FannyCann · 29/03/2022 08:16

One of our consultants has given an example of two times he nearly made an error. The CT scan is performed by radiographers and radiologists - Drs specialising in radiology - will report the scan remotely having never set eyes in the patient (bearing in mind the whole point of all this is that some may "pass" and get missed anyway).
In both cases the patient was a trans woman, so all the radiologist knew was the X-ray from stating "Female" and a feminine name. He was confused by an abnormal mass adjacent to the rectum. He could have reported it as a ?malignancy subjecting the person to unnecessary tests, a biopsy, the possibility of harm. And extra cost to the NHS too. But something clicked in his brain and he realised it was an atrophied prostate (atrophied die to cross sex hormones).

It is ridiculous, apparently the NHS computer systems currently can't cope with two separate fields for Sex and Gender plus these people get their medical records changed to state the sex they have "transitioned" to.

Personally I think people should be required to take more personal responsibility for their own health at their own risk but that isn't the harm prevention POV.

  • X-ray form
EatSleepReplete · 29/03/2022 08:30

Ridiculous. If a patient is put on roaccutane, or certain other drugs that cause serious birth defects, the patient is required to go on contraception & provide monthly urine samples. When I was on it, only females had to do this. Are they going to start insisting males take the pill or get other contraception now as well? It doesn't affect the sperm, only foetal development once implanted.

IncompleteSenten · 29/03/2022 08:34

Good.
More men need to understand how ridiculous this shit is.

Hoardasurass · 29/03/2022 08:36

In Scotland 10+ years ago when my uncle was being treated for cancer and prescribed thalidomide he had to sign a form saying that he wasn't pregnant and wouldn't get pregnant whilst taking it (was also having radio therapy at the time).
This shit has been going on quietly for a long time

KittenKong · 29/03/2022 08:37

If you are not mature enough to accept your sex - and what, refuse to acknowledge the medical issues that may arise from your actual sex, and on top of that what, have the attitude of a friend of mine who states that she is a natural bloke (but only because she dyes her mid brown hair blonde) - so don’t acknowledge the chemicals and interventions necessary for you to be ‘you’ (the ones that would cause problems / reversion of you stopped using them)…

Then you need to have medical staff taking your affairs in hand for you because you are actually working against them. Mentally this attitude must be incredible stressful anyway.

If a man decides he is a woman and therefore cannot have a life saving procedure because he may be pregnant , then he has a whole load of problems in his head, as well as a lump somewhere that won't be dealt with. It anyone is really that deluded then they are probably beyond help.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 29/03/2022 09:04

I think that there is a very strong argument that changing the sex marker on health records and issuing a new NHS number which indicates the wrong sex is discriminatory against people with a trans identity.

mateysmum · 29/03/2022 09:10

To quote the old saying "Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive"

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 29/03/2022 09:13

I'm very obviously male. If was ever asked by a medical professional if I was pregnant I would seriously doubt any of the advice they were giving me.

PrelateChuckles · 29/03/2022 09:14

So, what if a male person says "i could be pregnant, I've no way of knowing for sure". Do they halt the scan until they've done a test with first morning urine? Or do they ask them if they are ovulating?
