Spousal Exit Clause: Great news for trans widows

Great news for trans widows, and a vindication of the arguments made by Trans Widows Voices, against the lies and misrepresentations told about the "spousal veto"

Excerpt from the governments response to the Women and Equalities Commission report on reform of the GRA:

  1. A marriage or civil partnership is a contract between two individuals, the nature of which cannot be changed without the consent of both parties. For this reason, we considerit is equitable for the "spousal consent" requirement to remain in place.
  2. Spousal consent does not mean that a spouse can prevent their partner from securing a GRC. It is a safeguard for the non-transitioning spouse to decide whether they want their marriage or civil partnership to continue before their partner is granted a GRC. It is right that both parties should have an equal say in the future of their marriage or civilpartnership, given transition can fundamentally change its nature.
  3. More widely, we anticipate that the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020, which comes into force later this year, will help to reduce conflict in such circumstances

Drawn, I think?

FiftyWaysToWinInDenver · 25/03/2022 10:41

As Posie Parker says: Caroline Nokes - one for the blokes.

Also well done Tinsel!

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 25/03/2022 10:42

Or drew?

Team A drew against team B.... Yeah that sounds right.

But the game was ... Drawn?

A well deserved victory. Congratulations, Tinsel and all who fought for this. Best wishes to all transwidows.

Clymene · 29/03/2022 19:06

That's a great article. Well done Jo (and tinsel). You stopped this in its tracks.

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 29/03/2022 19:18

Brilliant news - and many congratulations, Tinsel. I often lurk on the transwidow support threads and, DH having died, I occasionally post when TRAs come claiming that transwidows aren't allowed to call themselves widows. In my view they have every right.

So pleased by this triumph! Well done!

Crcohetmonster · 29/03/2022 20:35

@PrawnofthePatriarchy as a fellow widow, I’m with you in this. They have every righting the TRAs can depart quickly.

Delphinium20 · 29/03/2022 21:09

Well done, Tinsel!!!Wine

Datun · 30/03/2022 00:17

Just as with the purchase of a boat or sports car, it tends to be men who hit middle age only to discover their “inner-woman” lurking in a pair of six-inch stilettos.

But this mutual agreement has been widely misconstrued as a “spousal veto” thanks to the campaigning efforts of transgender advocacy groups.

Good, clear article, setting it all out.

It’s ‘lesbophobia’ for a woman not to want to be trapped in a legally same-sex marriage, Nancy says. Why? Because some people matter more than other people?

Right, so identity is very important and it's wrong to try and force people to be something that they're not...except for the wives of men who suddenly transition. The identities of those women don't count, and they're nasty 'phobes' if they won't accept being in a legally same-sex marriage Hmm

Fucking hypocrite. Nancy, the only thing 🤮 here is seeing women like you shitting all over other women.

Melroses · 03/04/2022 11:26

You would think she would have some sympathy for those who might become trapped in a legally heterosexual marriage when they thought they had married someone of the same sex?

tabbycatstripy · 03/04/2022 11:43

Only person who gets to reply to NK says ‘Not a fan of the presupposition that a relationship ending is the default when a partner comes out. There are loads of happy healthy queer relationships that weren’t queer when they began... Also, fuck the term “trans widows”’.

Liked by Nancy Kelley.
