Spousal Exit Clause: Great news for trans widows

Great news for trans widows, and a vindication of the arguments made by Trans Widows Voices, against the lies and misrepresentations told about the "spousal veto"

Excerpt from the governments response to the Women and Equalities Commission report on reform of the GRA:

  1. A marriage or civil partnership is a contract between two individuals, the nature of which cannot be changed without the consent of both parties. For this reason, we considerit is equitable for the "spousal consent" requirement to remain in place.
  2. Spousal consent does not mean that a spouse can prevent their partner from securing a GRC. It is a safeguard for the non-transitioning spouse to decide whether they want their marriage or civil partnership to continue before their partner is granted a GRC. It is right that both parties should have an equal say in the future of their marriage or civilpartnership, given transition can fundamentally change its nature.
  3. More widely, we anticipate that the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020, which comes into force later this year, will help to reduce conflict in such circumstances

My concern would be that this will constitute such an affront to the trans worldview

If women having equality constitutes an affront to the trans world view then it is a world view more than due another think.

DiscontentedWoman · 24/03/2022 20:08

Congratulations @TinselAngel this is terrific news Flowers Gin

Pinklimey · 24/03/2022 20:28

Well done. I'm so pleased for you and for all the women who were looking at being forced to stay with their transed husbands.

All it takes is a bit of reading to see why this is so important.

mathanxiety · 24/03/2022 20:35

What, keeping the law the same as it is now? You're suggesting we should keep quiet so we don't antagonise them, and presumably just let them take our rights away? Fuck that I've been there before

No, I'm suggesting that even more agitation may be necessary and absolutely nothing should be taken as a given.

A week is a long time in politics. Several months is an eternity.

I think I can have a couple of days off, but we are only relatively safe for the lifetime of this parliament.

@TinselAngel

I'm a bit over excited!

I've been watching this aspect and (if I've understood it right!) always thought it was madness. Marriage is a legal contract.

But anyway, it being a contract means the result you rightly got was ALWAYS going to be the case. Didn't stop the TRAs trying to railroad their own wishes through though.

Well done - this must've been very draining to have to go through.

WineCakeThanks

Rainbowshit · 24/03/2022 23:10

So pleased for you. Absolutely crazy that anyone should think that if one spouse "changes sex" that the other should be forced to stay in the marriage.

AlsoNotAGirl · 24/03/2022 23:55

Well done Tinsel and the other Trans widows on this site

GibbonsGoatsGibbons · 25/03/2022 00:06

FooFooFloofyFoof · 25/03/2022 08:45

Brilliant news!

QuinkWashable · 25/03/2022 09:05

Fantastic news Tinsel, no matter what others may think, we all know that if you hadn't made noise about this, then people would have continued to call it a veto, and it would certainly have been removed.

Great job.

SingingSands · 25/03/2022 10:06

Well done @TinselAngel 👍🏼

TinselAngel · 25/03/2022 10:17

I remember as a child watching the football results because there was nothing else on telly and trying to guess by the tone of the announcers voice, when he said the score of the first team, whether they'd won, lost or drawed (drew?)

Really well done! I’m so glad for you; the “spousal veto” propaganda was so widespread and it seemed like a lot of people even with some reservations about the trans movement were willing to throw trans widows under the bus as a sop. It’s no mean feat to turn that around. Congratulations!

Its a situation that is untenable however you look at it but is even more ridiculous if you subscribe to the view that TWaW. If you believe that low, a man can become a woman then you are saying it's OK it turn an opposite sex marriage into a same sex marriage, without the consent of one of the parties. How can that not be unacceptable? At least from the GC point of view it remains a marriage between a man and a woman.
