The Daily Telegraph exclusive reports today that Commonwealth Games chiefs have agreed on new gender rules, which could pave the way for a trans woman to race for a female cycling medal.

The DT understands a potential contender, who previously competed in male categories is in serious contention to be picked. The cyclist has yet to formally confirm they want to compete in Birmingham.

The DT is now in full campaign mode re the trans in sport issue.

The sports section today has the following double page spread

Yep this is not the end. Looks like BC. don’t care about women

They will carry on unless someone in government says no

HermioneKipper · 30/03/2022 20:14

They’ve clearly only stopped Emily Bridges racing this weekend as they’ve been told they have to.

Shows nothing but contempt for women and they should be ashamed

KittenKong · 30/03/2022 20:17

I hope all the women racing (and their team/family and friends, observers) take time to explain to the on-site officials and judges what they think.

Ruinedwalks · 30/03/2022 20:27

The UCI let Veronica Ivy ride in the masters. This has got to be about a technicality and nothing more.

Yep.

BC are genuinely blaming a French organisation for sequentially shitting on women, trans athletes and women again. While still saying there's nothing wrong with their original crappy policy.

Genuinely having a moment feeling sorry for EB. This is emphatically how not to do it.

Rodedooda · 30/03/2022 21:06

Not sorry for EB. What level of narcissist must you be to muscle your way in to compete in female competition when you have all the advantages of a male body?

Ruinedwalks · 30/03/2022 21:12

Just reread the comment from BC and am even more annoyed. Fairness isn’t just important at elite level. Have they ever watched Youth Racing? Those girls really want to win, and the ones that don’t, drop out. Cycling is a huge commitment - not just the hours and hours of training, but the weekends away from home, and the hours of travel time to competitions often in the opposite end of the country You see girls out training in sleet, rain and freezing temperatures. They do all this because they want to win, they want to get onto teams and they want to get into development squads. The girls riding beyond the age of 14 are not just doing it for a bit of fun. It really shouldn’t be dismissed that easily.

PermanentTemporary · 30/03/2022 21:17

EB is 21 and has been comprehensively led up the garden path by everyone around her saying this is right and OK and she's doing it all the way it should be. I remember the tunnel vision of being a young athlete. I don't think what she's done is OK but BC have hugely screwed up from the start, the fools.

viques · 30/03/2022 21:17

@Olderbadger1

"We know that some of these conversations are happening in pockets of the sporting world, but we want to encourage all sporting governing bodies, athletes, the transgender and non-binary athlete community, the Government and beyond to come together and find a better answer."

Same old same old.

Does it really need a committee to see the light and tell the truth?

Men have no place in womens sports.

There, just saved them a long day of soul searching.

I completely agree. If she’s stuck to male races she’d be considered a hero -look st how much positive attention she got in the Uni games. I’m just glad she isn’t going to be there on Saturday, as I think anyone would struggle with the reaction she was likely to get.
Ruinedwalks · 30/03/2022 21:31

Look at Veronica’s proof that mles and females have the same testosterone. See if you can guess which colour represents which sex. I don’t think it makes the case dh’s thinks it does.

EB will be welcomed into future races by various organisations.

I agree that EB could have continued to race in the men's categories and FWR would have booked a coach to attend that event and cheer and applaud the public demonstration of just how you "broaden the bandwidth of what it means" etc.

Presumably EB's team mates in the university events didn't change their attitudes or collegiality and that is an excellent team picture (upthread).

FemaleAndLearning · 30/03/2022 22:48

I'm fed up of testosterone being mentioned. 8ts very simple keep men out if women's sport. The answer is no you can compete with women if you are a man who says he is a woman.

partystress · 30/03/2022 23:10

I’ve signed up as a volunteer for the Commonwealth Games. Really wanted to do something that was about bringing people together. If this position is maintained, I will withdraw. I can’t be part of keeping women who have trained their whole lives from what should have been their moment. And I won’t be part of a lie.

I'm in a feminist group in Coventry. We were talking about this in January, that if there were any trans athletes at the Games that we would hold a protest there, with our sisters in Birmingham. And we will. If you want to join us, send me a dm. This is UNACCEPTABLE.
Enough4me · 31/03/2022 01:07

The officials have changed their minds. Zach Bridges cannot compete in the women's race.

Matzeeo · 31/03/2022 06:33

As someone mentioned above, I think all that's happened is the UCI have said you can't change your race licence part way through the season, other than that EB has complied with the UCI rules. I think race licences run jan-dec so kicked down the road until then.

Ffs. Just have a trans category already?!? 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

334bu · 31/03/2022 07:37

Ffs. Just have a trans category already?!?

No need, as Open category would cover all gender identities, while a protected female category would ensure fairness for women.

PermanentTemporary · 31/03/2022 07:54

I don't want a protest about 'trans athletes at the games'. And if you put it in those terms you will actually get people joining who think like that. Presumably you like me think that male people in female categories is unacceptable. Language matters.

Helleofabore · 31/03/2022 09:34

I agree permanent. Trans people should be encouraged to compete.

It is specifically males in female sports categories that is the issue.

The issue needs to be very clear in a protest.

Runningslow · 31/03/2022 19:46

Just seen someone on twitter saying that the UCI are making an announcement at 8pm.

KittenKong · 31/03/2022 19:51

Tonight?
