The Daily Telegraph exclusive reports today that Commonwealth Games chiefs have agreed on new gender rules, which could pave the way for a trans woman to race for a female cycling medal.

The DT understands a potential contender, who previously competed in male categories is in serious contention to be picked. The cyclist has yet to formally confirm they want to compete in Birmingham.

The DT is now in full campaign mode re the trans in sport issue.

The sports section today has the following double page spread

This may be a long game, it may take a man to clearly and publicly win in a women's race for the wider public to see what is going on. The public at these events should get up and walk out as the competitors cannot do anything or face harassment and loss of funding.

@EmbarrassingHadrosaurus

I do hope he has the balls to speak up, not just to support his wife, but to support all the other women on the UK Cycling circuits.

It would be financially ruinous for the Kennys to go against British Cycling who are fully supportive of Bridges.

Look what happened to the coaching career of Sharron Davies' father when he spoke up about doping and unfairness.

I hope things have moved on a bit since then, social media, whatever we think of it, means that bullying such as Sharron’s dad experienced is harder to hide. The Kenny’s have a lot of support both inside and outside the cycling world, and the Thomas fiasco is still high on the agenda, but I take your point, which makes the whole situation even more disgraceful, that standing up for what is fair has to be nuanced against putting your livelihood at risk.

So, it's up to people who have spent a lot of money to attend to walk out when they're motivated not to?

Does anybody below the board level of any sporting organisation have power here?

Why is this juggernaut so unstoppable if it's a handful of people who aren't accountable to the public for their decisions.

Enough4me · 30/03/2022 13:11

Unfortunately yes I think wider social action would be safer than individuals taking a stand.

I was talking to someone this morning, someone who loves most sport and is an avid follower of cricket, she was furious that the GB womens cricket team are getting so little coverage here despite the fact that they are in the semifinal of the world cup . I was talking about EB and she had never heard of them. There is still a lot of work to be done to raise awareness.

(She was also unaware of Maxine Blythin, which really surprised me, but then, my friend is Australian!)

Marine who is 6ft tall and doing well for Kent, but it's all good, nothing to see here.

A glimmer of hope in that my local MP, Tonia Antoniazzi, has just raised this very issue in the Commons. She's a brilliant MP and this is one more reason to admire her.

Enough4me · 30/03/2022 15:14

@massistar that is good to hear. Has she raised the vital need for sex-based categories to be upheld?

I'm so envious that Tonia Antoniazzi is your MP, she's a beacon of courage on this issue.

Interesting to see this a segment on Sky sports news on this. Speaker Joanna Harper. Apparently haemoglobin levels are the most important thing in this event 🙃

Here's what she said specifically:

I have opinions on sex differences in Haemoglobin levels: The misogyny of iron deficiency

"Anaemia is common, particularly in women and the commonest underlying cause, iron deficiency, is often overlooked. Anaemia is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing anaesthesia; however, women are defined as being anaemic at a lower haemoglobin level than men. In this narrative review, we present the history of iron deficiency anaemia and how women’s health has often been overlooked. Iron deficiency was first described as ‘chlorosis’ and a cause of ‘hysteria’ in women and initial treatment was by iron filings in cold wine. We present data of population screening demonstrating how common iron deficiency is, affecting 12–18% of apparently ‘fit and healthy’ women, with the most common cause being heavy menstrual bleeding; both conditions being often unrecognised. We describe a range of symptoms reported by women, that vary from fatigue to brain fog, hair loss and eating ice. We also describe experiments exploring the physical impact of iron deficiency, showing that reduced exercise performance is related to iron deficiency independent of haemoglobin concentration, as well as the impact of iron supplementation in women improving oxygen consumption and fitness. Overall, we demonstrate the need to single out women and investigate iron deficiency rather than accept the dogma of normality and differential treatment; this is to say, the need to change the current standard of care for women undergoing anaesthesia."

Sally Gunnel has come out in support of women on Twitter! She thinks this is nonsense.

How is this happening? It feels like the world has gone absolutely mad and we’re the only sane ones and screaming into a void.

I am boiling with rage. What can we do?

This shouldn't require such a degree of courage but it does.

I'm so proud of these athletes.

So grateful to these brave athletes speaking out. It shouldn’t be brave to speak the truth but it is.
