But men. Men can play women. That's FINE apparently!

Until I read the link, I genuinely thought this must be a spoof. There is more than a soupçon of similarity between this tale and individuals who present as themselves one day and as women in another day.

So a group of men are making a film about a male who adopts different identities while hiding his relationship with another male. It's certainly a reworking of Dr J & Mr H, but hardly a female one. More a homophobic reworking of the story.

“With [Eddie] being the extraordinary and versatile actress she is, playing against Scott’s natural talent to make us believe in the good in people, I can’t wait to bring this suspenseful take on the iconic classic to life,” said Stephenson

So versatile that they have only EVER played blokes before

Goatsaregreat · 10/02/2022 15:50

So that's an important potential role for a woman actor - not available for a woman. Hmm

able bodied actors may not play disabled people.....

Non disabled actors play disabled people all the time.

The opposite of disabled is not able bodied. Many disabled people are able bodied, and vice versa.

NancyDrawed · 10/02/2022 15:52

Interestingly, I have only seen male trans actors using 'actress' as a term to describe themselves. The female members of the profession have been using 'actor' for a number of years now.

Also, while I have no issue with changing Dr Jekyll from male to female as a twist, doesn't using a trans actor somewhat play into the favourite (and incorrect) TRA line that saying 'no' to men in women's spaces is equivalent to saying all TW are predators?

Signalbox · 10/02/2022 15:53

So presumably Izzard is going to morph from a "female" Dr Jekyll into a male Mr Hyde? I wonder if this "reimagining" will have space for any actual female actors?

Flammable means the same as inflammable.

In case anyone else was looking for some more unecessary verbiage!

WaningMoon · 10/02/2022 16:24

What’s the point in reimagining the character as a women and then having a male play her?

Absolutely fucking none. This could have been an amazing opportunity for a female actor, what a waste.

quiteathome · 10/02/2022 17:01

I assumed the character must have been trans.

Last time I saw Eddie in something the character was male. And that was that recent Netflix thing.

As male as male can be, right down to his preference for fat pinstripes, and his paternalistic care taking of happy hookers.

I genuinely think that people in general are getting fed up and bored with all this utter nonsense. Constantly being told what they can and can’t think and do, being told that they can’t believe their own eyes, and that we must learn new language so’s not to ‘offend’ or make people feel ‘unsafe’. Soho House offering a choice of 4 pronouns from a list of 40 when you sign up…

It has finally eaten itself.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 10/02/2022 18:01

I did question how Eddie Izzard permits himself to play straight male roles, such as in The Lost Symbol on Sky ... I guess he wants the best of both worlds. All four worlds. Well, pretty much every world.

IvyTwines · 10/02/2022 18:06

And it has already been done, and done very well indeed: Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde, with Ralph Bates and Martine Beswick.

VioletLemon · 10/02/2022 18:08

So the character is reimagined as a male who sometimes identifies as a transwomen, except for when there is an opportunity to benefit from (biological) male privilege. A bit like Eddie... WTAF?

BraveBananaBadge · 10/02/2022 18:16

It sounds quite interesting actually. Eddie can do it in whatever 'mode' Eddie likes. But to call it a 'female reimagining' completely takes the piss.

CustardCreamsAndMintTea · 10/02/2022 18:21

White men.... Angry

Ah, but be fair, there are loads of fantastic roles for women already - especially those of us over 40. And they're all such interesting, well drawn, fully rounded roles too, that in no way reduce to a narrow set of stereotypes that are only there so that the lead male isn't talking to himself.

It's about time we stood aside and made room for that eternally marginalised group, the white middle-class man.

HmmSadAngry

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 10/02/2022 19:28

Thing is done well it could have been very good having a transwoman dr jekyll and a male mr hyde

But i agree completely that its not in any way, shape or form a ‘female reimagining’

Dh said it was offensive actually….i made him guess who was starring in the female reimagining and he guessed Jodie whittaker

CatSpeakForDummies · 10/02/2022 21:28

The irony is that Jekyll and Hyde was written about ten years after women could start going to medical school in Edinburgh.

For a woman of that age to be a well respected physician in the 1880s, she would have had to pretend to be a man.

Rhannion · 10/02/2022 21:47

Robert Louis Stevenson & his wife Fanny will be spinning in their graves.
I don’t think he would mind a woman in a good solid reimagined version but this is a travesty.

DoubleYouOhEmAyEn · 10/02/2022 21:54

Izzard is a self absorbed prick who wants it all his way. He appears not to gave a shred of empathy or respect for women. I'm so over males telling us about the female experience. Knobs.
