@StillWeRise

I can't see any comments- do you have to subscribe to see them?
No you don't need to subscribe but I have found it very hit and miss whether I can see them even though I am subscribed.

So far I have never had a problem seeing comments in The Times app, it is only ever a problem viewing on a desktop.

Sometimes it takes a few moments for the comments to load and it looks at first as if there is no comments section.

Sometimes I can't see the comments when I have a VPN switched on but then they come into view if I turn it off and refresh the page.

However, today I have got a VPN switched on and I can see them no problem.

It is one of those annoying "intermittent problems", like the funny noise your car makes but it goes mysteriously quiet when you take it to a mechanic to have it looked at Smile

If you are subscribed the difference is that you can make comments as well as view them. (You can do other things too, like make links with share tokens and "bookmark" articles in your account.)

Is there a right way now to think in Scotland.

Are the police going to come in to our homes if we say something on Twitter that someone doesn’t like.

Is that how it works here now

Dectetives as well. Not the ordinary police. And traveled to interview

Am still waiting for the police from a few months ago when I made a report. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

ErrolTheDragon · 29/01/2022 14:18

I've never been able to see comments in the app (iPad) ever. But never any problem seeing them from a link open in Safari. I have to scroll down below adverts/links to related stories.

The Times article finishes with this line

In a statement the Scottish Police Federation said: “QED.”

What does this mean in the context of the article?

IncompleteSenten · 29/01/2022 15:53

It means they're arrogant twats

unwashedanddazed · 29/01/2022 16:26

This "check the thinking behind your statement" is so close to the PC Gul statement to Harry, which landed the college of policing in much publicity and hot water, that it has me thinking it might be deliberate. Also the QED statement. Not in an effort to wind feminists up, but to expose the ridiculous things the police are forced to carry out in the name of hate crimes on Twitter. Two detectives making a three hour round trip to ask a woman why she thinks women's services are important is the most ludicrous waste of an police resources imaginable. They can't be blind to this. Any ordinary person applying common sense can see how stupid it is.

I'm starting to wonder if it's a cry for help from the police.

MidsomerMurmurs · 29/01/2022 16:37

I'm starting to wonder if it's a cry for help from the police

Perhaps. But a clearer cry for help would have been for the Scottish Police Federation to come out and say “we are being directed to act in unacceptable ways by the governing political party in Scotland”.

I lean more towards the arrogant twats explanation. Occam’s razor and all that.

unwashedanddazed · 29/01/2022 16:58

I'm hopelessly optimistic.

thirdfiddle · 29/01/2022 17:05

"Murray said: “Then they said, ‘We better watch what we are saying — we don’t want to be quoted as police officers saying such and such.’"

Brilliant. To quote, journalist says Murray says policemen said they were wary of saying anything that could be quoted. Confused Grin

I'm equally baffled by this. It would help if the article stated what question the Times put to the SPF.

One interpretation, however, is that it means something like "Look at this madness. This is an example of what we're being forced to do."

Equally possible that the SPF spokesperson didn't know what QED meant and was using it wrongly!

ArabellaScott · 29/01/2022 18:03

@TurquoiseBaubles

Assistant Chief Constable Gary Ritchie said: “Hate crime and discrimination of any kind is deplorable and entirely unacceptable. Police Scotland will investigate every report of a hate crime or hate incident.”

They are going to be very busy, especially as Wadwha claims “Since 2019, I have reported hate to the police more times than I can count. No charges, no convictions." - so no crimes then, but every one has been investigated. Is there such a thing as a malicious complainant? How often can someone like Wadwha cry wolf before the police stop wasting much needed resources?

Also noting the enormous increase in reporting of certain types of hate crime could quite feasibly be explained by the enthusiastic reporting of one or two people. IIRC the increase was from around 40 to about 70 'hate crimes', widely reported as a % increase.
ArabellaScott · 29/01/2022 18:04

This report should never, ever have been taken seriously. It's utterly chilling, and reprehensible. I just don't know what to say to this, or anyone who thinks persecuting and terrorising a women who runs a children's charity is 'the right side of history'.

PearPickingPorky · 29/01/2022 19:10

I'm starting to wonder if it's a cry for help from the police

Me too.

"Check your thinking" is like a hostage statement.

MarciaDidia · 29/01/2022 19:22

For those unclear on why the Scottish Police Federation said "QED":

"A 76 per cent rise in reported crimes in which the transgender issue was the aggravating factor (76 reports) contrasted with 6.1 per cent growth in all hate crime reports (3,782) reflecting the impact of online rows about trans rights and gender identity, according to the Scottish Police Federation."

So, SPF, what do think about this latest incident?

"QED"

BlackeyedSusan · 29/01/2022 19:38

QED means you've proven something. It's pretentious to use it when you're not discussing a proof, and embarrassing to use it you're just ranting and not even remotely proving anything.

from google. for those of us who had to look it up.

It’s usually used in mathematics. I think the translation is something like, that which was required to be proved has been. (I have a maths degree but it was a while ago 😂)
ArabellaScott · 29/01/2022 20:06

'As has been demonstrated' quad erat demonstrandum in my entirely ropy Latin.

ArabellaScott · 29/01/2022 20:09
  • I take it to mean 'we told you this would create impossible situations but you didn't listen, we've said we can't police hate crime on Twitter and here you go, it's ridiculous '
Lifeinthelastlane · 29/01/2022 20:14

The next Rebus novel is going to be pretty boring, isn't it? No murders, just a selection of women having their thinking checked.

It could be that it's more the individual officers who are acting out as well as they can, while the organization officially feels it can't say anything.
StillWeRise · 29/01/2022 21:02

quad erat demonstrandum (sp)
my understanding is -
'which was to have been proved'- in other words, the thing we set out to prove, has been proved
which does actually bear the interpretation put on it here, but expressed in a rather obscure way- do they even write 'QED' in maths anymore???

TV police procedurals are going to be unwatchably pedestrian and tedious.

I was taught it meant 5W - Which Was What Was Wanted
AliceInDinoLand · 29/01/2022 21:50

The Scottish Police Federation opposed the Hate Crime Bill and said it would be impossible to police. Last week Calum Steele (the secretary) was in the Times saying people were reporting comments that upset them on Twitter as "crimes".

I think thier "QED" means "we told you so"!

The SPF is distinct from the big police bosses, they represent the rank and file. There is clearly an issue!
