Hi all, a girls's school in Watford has decided to not allow transgender pupils to apply in order to keep its single sex status. 2 Days ago, the reader vote had approx 89% votes supporting the school's decision but today that's at 43%. Every vote counts if you want to support this school's decision and the poll closes at the end of today: www.watfordobserver.co.uk/news/19841276.girls-day-school-trust-will-not-accept-transgender-pupils/?fbclid=IwAR31FqnKbleYYH_h5-ryFX0ebDVcep-EFbGgZD0aZdeqMMlMVUsVmdn746g

The campaign to swing it started last night.

Beamur · 15/01/2022 13:46

Girls school decides not to admit boys.

hedgehogger1 · 15/01/2022 14:05

They are a single SEX school. That's all that should need to be said really. It's not possible to change your sex while you can identify as anything you like!

PoisonCrystal · 15/01/2022 14:09

It seems strange to me that American TRAs are focused on a campaign against this little known girls’ school when there’s a world renowned famous single-sex school that’s less than six miles away in neighbouring Harrow. What’s the difference? 😉

CoastalWave · 15/01/2022 14:10

Anyone who was a boy and now operates (if that's the right word) as a girl - ...that's the gist?

So basically still has a penis.

No. Shouldn't be at an all girls school.

A girl who's born a girl but is dressing up as a boy? I think that's fine.

I don't get why people have a problem with this. The GPDST have been around for years. If you don't agree with it, pick a mixed school for your child.

BlaBlaSmthSmth · 15/01/2022 14:12

The way they've worded that poll is so ridiculous "Do you think that trans pupils should be able to attend single-sex schools?" ..it completely misrepresents the discussion, the issue is whether trans pupils should be allowed to attend single sex schools of the opposite sex. The answer is obviously "no" if they want to be single sex.

KittyLeMew · 15/01/2022 14:50

Voted.

Fuck off TRAs.

YankeeDad · 15/01/2022 15:10

interesting also that they use green for "make the school accept boys" and red for "school should accept only females"

ErrolTheDragon · 15/01/2022 15:13

If it's US activists, they should butt out. I'm pretty sure U.K. law allows single sex schools but that there is no legal basis whatever for a 'single gender' school. (Even if it was, where would that leave 'nonbinaries' and various other 'genders' other than masculine/feminine?)

BlaBlaSmthSmth · 15/01/2022 15:16

@YankeeDad

interesting also that they use green for "make the school accept boys" and red for "school should accept only females"
That struck me too!
BlaBlaSmthSmth · 15/01/2022 15:16

TBH I don't get the point of them doing a poll at all if the same person can just refresh and answer multiple times.

Alekto · 15/01/2022 15:27

@BootsAndRoots

There is no way that 130,000 people typically read that paper (which is about the number of votes).

I expect that there is a campaign elsewhere to get people to vote the other way.

The question is badly written. I don't think anyone has a problem with trans pupils attending a single-sex school, it's just a matter of which one.

A quick google tells me that the Watford Observer has a circulation of

AgathaMystery · 15/01/2022 16:00

This is just a readers poll. GDST will not be swayed by stuff like this. If they are then people like me (who pay the fees) will vote with their money.

KittenKong · 15/01/2022 18:55

@Bluebluemoon39

Omg - I've just voted - I can't believe the "yes" votes are winning.

People are just walking blindly into this.

I'd be absolutely livid if this was my dd's school.

When it first went up the Nos were waaaaay ahead. Funnily enough it flipped quite dramatically quite quickly. Almost as if some jiggery pokery was going on.
Whatwouldscullydo · 15/01/2022 19:19

TRAs- aren't their more serious things than a transgirl or 2 at a girls school with other girls, to care about.

Also TRAs- quickly everyone all over the world spam a poll to show that people believe transgirls are girls amd should be in a girls school .

I hope they stick to their guns. Girls schools should remain for actual girls. Boys and other male children have a choice of mixed and single sex. Let girls have theirs

FlyingOink · 15/01/2022 21:49

Just wanted to add my incredulity at the now 139,000 votes on a local newspaper poll...

Although the discussion in the comments section is top notch. Watford should be proud.

I suspect that there is nothing to stop someone voting more than once by refreshing the page and then voting again. Not a good way to gather information about people's views - too easily gamed.

FlyingOink · 15/01/2022 22:09

Change.org petitions are an entire waste of time.

BrideofAberdeen · 15/01/2022 22:11

The change.org petition seems to be arguing against single sex schools.

JaninaDuszejko · 15/01/2022 22:23

I don't think many on FWR will want to support that campaign Redlake, it's a campaign to change single sex schools to mixed sex.

Alekto · 15/01/2022 22:29

Petitions aren't allowed on FWR, Redlame. There's a specific board for them.

fallfallfall · 15/01/2022 22:33

this kind of "voting" really isn't appropriate as it could easily be taken over by any outside interest "group".
voting should be based on home address and limited.

mariesatonhisknee · 15/01/2022 22:41

My daughters go to one of the GDST schools- we’re one of the academy schools, so we don’t pay and it’s very mixed background now. There’s already at least one transgender child in primary, through my work I’m aware in the senior school there are children identifying as non binary/ transgender

mariesatonhisknee · 15/01/2022 22:50

And I completely agree with what they are doing , it’s recognised girls do well in a single sex high school. But they are being receptive to those girls who are having a bit of an identity crisis and fair enough if they continue to identify as male. But I can see why they don’t want young trans women in the schools
