Even though they ask school children this on a 'census'

A bit hypocritical, no?

Not just a bit! A huge hypocrisy!

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 11/01/2022 22:09

Well I was going to ask why the hell that would be anyone else’s business but I see that’s entirely your point. That census was obscene Angry

MichelleScarn · 11/01/2022 22:11

The school census was the 'oh its completely anonymous, but you will have a unique indentifer code number attached to your form'

Walking4You · 11/01/2022 22:12

They are doing a survey on sexual preferences and asking pupils to put their name in there?!?

Triphazards · 11/01/2022 22:13

They don't need to answer.

We know they're all at it like knives!

CanIPleaseHaveOne · 11/01/2022 22:15

My daughter was asked that two years ago with me in room (we live abroad). I was livid. Spoke to the doctors, practise manager, told everyone etc.

I do not understand the reason for this. If the answer is Yes and they are underage will the survey people report a crime?

Also - by asking on official surveys don't they normalise a practise that is not ordinary and can cause considerabe damage? Don't they also normalise having sex to very young children?

I have not had one reasonabe answer to this line of questioning and was treated as though I was a controlling, problematic woman. It felt really off.

MiladyBerserko · 11/01/2022 22:17

No, the pupils' candidate number, not their name. So completely anonymous..my hairy arse.

Also, who are the systems admin? Why has access to this data? And which group(s) commissioned and/or are responsinle for the analysis of this survey? And why?

No answers to any of these questions from the Scottish government

OP posts:
madisonbridges · 11/01/2022 22:23

I came on here to defend the Scottish Govt from being expected to answer that question.
Then I realised it was the Scottish govt actually asking the question. Of others.
What an awful thing to ask anyone.

JustcameoutGC · 11/01/2022 22:27

I wonder who did the FOI. Pure evil genius.

NoToast · 11/01/2022 22:28

Interesting.sirry for the derail but I'm in England and I overheard teens discussing sex education class at school on the bus today. One said their brother had been put in detention because it was compulsory to answer a question on how you felt about sex. The brother had answered "I'm only 15 and I don't think about it".

Now maybe that's just bullshit but it's appalling if true.

MiladyBerserko · 11/01/2022 22:30

Asking school children, while in school madisonbridges

BourbonBiscuits20 · 11/01/2022 22:39

Beyond disgusting agree with PP pointing out normalising this type of thing to school children is just sinister.

madisonbridges · 11/01/2022 22:54

Asking anyone, anywhere, outside some sort of medical issue, is just wrong. Children shouldn't be put in a situation where they may feel pressured to answer that.

CompleteGinasaur · 11/01/2022 23:23

More insanity from north of the border (north of me, anyway..) Scotland has a very special place in my heart, my mother lives there and I spent a lot of my teens there. I also have a romantic and inflated idea of Scots intelligence, industry and rationality and a mad crush on Katherine Grainger, but every time I see the place mentioned now I just brace myself for the worst. Arch cynic Dorothy Parker used to say "What fresh hell is this?" whenever the doorbell rang - it's a bit like that!

Waitwhat23 · 11/01/2022 23:51

Oh, that FOI requester is brilliant! I particularly liked the 'I realise that you might not have this information on file so if you could just fire around an email....?'.

I've seen some sources say that children are expected to fill this out during class time so I can't imagine that any results they get from this survey would be useful anyway - sitting in a classroom with classmates being able to see your answers, no mechanisms to support children who might find the questions distressing for any reason, peer pressure or simple fooling about mean that it's pointless as well as intrusive.

slightlysnippy · 12/01/2022 00:02

“so I would appreciate if you could fire around a quick email to them asking this simple question”.
After a very depressing day on twitter due to yesterday's debate on single sex prisons, this line very much cheered me up.
😂😂😂

BettyFilous · 12/01/2022 00:13

From the article in the OP:

But the Scottish Government has insisted it will continue to support the controversial survey.

😮

2319inprogress · 12/01/2022 00:21

Grin bloody genius

(For anyone not familiar the survey is supposed to be linked only to the child's candidate number... which is the number that links the child to their exam results etc so not even slightly anonymous Angry)

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 12/01/2022 09:02

not even slightly anonymous and such a useful, indeed valuable, list of children who have been trained in accepting sexual abuse. Now I wonder who could possibly want that?

Kotatsu · 12/01/2022 09:10

Even if the answer is in-theory optional, if the teachers are asking the children to do it in class time, there is a strong element of coercion there - a person in a position of authority asking them to answer these unbelievably invasive questions.

How can anyone think this is even slightly acceptable.

The FOI is perfect - though what are the chances it'll actually make anyone think.

bishophaha · 12/01/2022 09:17

Is there a thread on the census and what's being asked of the children? This is nuts!

SerendipityJane · 12/01/2022 09:55

Sometimes, when the anger and pushback doesn't work, the next step is to just lie, dare them to call you a liar and make their statistics useless.

I started doing this in the 70s when they started snooping about race/racial background/ethnicity/ethnic origins.

On the flip side, it's one reason why I am very cynical about some statistics.

IvyTwines · 12/01/2022 09:55

I too came on this thread thinking wtf, what kind of intrusive question is that to ask politicians, only to discover it's the politicians asking it of children!

If they want data on this, they could ask doctors what health issues girls are coming to them with, and extrapolate from that.

Thievesoil · 12/01/2022 09:59

Love the FOI request. So clever

Scotland has indeed lost the plot. I could mention many simIlar issues but it’s too depressing

Whatwouldscullydo · 12/01/2022 10:00

Very clever!

Who ever did this is a genius
