Just thought I'd drop this here.

Private Eye on JKR

Daniel can sing the periodic table, can you?

Whooppeee.

My cousin can burp the alphabet.

Funny Private Eye, funny Radcliffe periodic table song.

I don’t dislike any of these performers for their views, I simply disagree with their views on biology and the back-handed way they failed to understand—or even their lack of trying to understand—JKR’s position. She’s been very clear, they’ve hidden behind slogans.

I do think Radcliffe in particular has proven himself a bit with other projects (Warhorse on stage, for example). Watson went on to attend the Ivy League Brown University, and Grint attended a grammar school and has participated in some projects that have led to a more diverse CV in the industry. I’m not even sure he wants to pursue acting, but he seems a low-key, regular guy.

Would any of them have had such massive platforms from which to spout their opinions without JKR’s talent and work? Highly doubtful. None seems extraordinary, but all could have been jobbing actors.

Would they have ended up working in fast food? Highly doubtful. The three had enough advantages and education to avoid that job by their 30s (it’s honest work, by the way).

Their biggest mistake, from my point of view, was not listening, not thinking any opinion other than their own was worth consideration, and helping their mentor to twist in the wind by speaking out about myriad issues they don’t they fully understand.

@ErrolTheDragon

Has anyone amended the song to include the elements which have been discaaarvard since Tom Lehrer wrote it?
Well, in 1980 Mr Stokes. Chemistry, had Smile

So we added Lawrencium, Rutherfordium, Dubnium, Seaborgium, Bohrium* was added by the time DSis got to maker her O level choices

*Bohrium - more easily remembered as a Queen hit

So DSis sang "... Lawrencium, Rutherfordium, Dubnium, Seaborgium, Bohrium - remembered as Bo'Rahpsidium by all the childerinium"

Maybe Marg has some fond memories of the song too???

I give you this amazing updated rendition, in Japanese, sung by a delightful pair of twins.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/01/2022 17:40

Ooh! Too cute! Quite literally!

TInkyWlnky · 10/01/2022 17:41

Daniel can sing the periodic table, can you?

🤣 Yes. So can my children. It's really not that hard.

TInkyWlnky · 10/01/2022 17:43

They are attractive and very talented

Yet void of critical thought.

@Campervan69

Daniel bless him is teeny tiny and not in the slightest bit sexy or attractive. Even at a stretch.
Not a fan of the man but I don't see what his height or appearance has to do with anything...
Campervan69 · 10/01/2022 17:53

Because that was the comment that I was responding to. That he was very attractive. I beg to differ. Is that allowed nowadays 🤔

Snoozer11 · 10/01/2022 17:54

Even if JKR and Harry Potter didn't exist, I don't think any of these would have attended a state school.

The odds were stacked in their favour from the moment they were born. It's obvious given how tone death they all are - particularly Watson.

If they had had a more humble start I don't imagine they'd be so dismissive of JKR.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/01/2022 17:54

They're factors which may well affect whether a child star continues to have a successful career as an adult.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/01/2022 17:55

See Mickey Rooney...

MrsWooster · 10/01/2022 17:56

You’re right, snoozer but Harry Potter is described in the text as “a midget in glasses” so DR’s diminutive stature is fairly niche to the part created by She Who Must Not Be Named.
(Though I suppose it hasn’t hindered Tom Cruise much.)

Bortles · 10/01/2022 18:13

Watson gets ridiculous opportunities for someone who, as crew who work with her note, has a painful lack of acting ability.

TheFnozwhowasmirage · 10/01/2022 18:15

Dialsquare that really did make me snort.
A relative worked on a project with 'the other one'. They said that he was massively unprofessional.

Queenoftheashes · 10/01/2022 19:07

@Bortles is that note in the public domain?
She really is dreadful.

TheWordOfBagheera · 10/01/2022 19:36

I'm torn on this. I really don't understand the hate towards JKR based on her essay - I thought it was both sensible and sensitive.

But I also understand why someone might turn their back on the person who enabled them to forge a successful career if they thought that person was guilty of something heinous. It wasn't a personal favour from JkR, they auditioned and were cast. They obviously strongly believe that she is guilty of something that eclipses that. I happen to think they are very wrong, but many horrible people create careers for others (especially in the world of film and TV) and I wouldn't expect someone to feel beholden to someone they felt was dreadful because they landed them a great job.

I think it makes more sense to focus on why their views on JKR aren't fair or logical than argue that she 'created' them and they should therefore treat her with special reverence regardless of any views she might hold. At the same time I despise cancel culture in general so I'm not sure where the balance lies.

(I realise I am probably missing the point for what was meant to be just a post about a silly cartoon!)

Their only talent was being in the right place at the right time and resembling how JKR imagined her characters to look.

StrangeLookingParasite · 11/01/2022 14:24

They are attractive and very talented

They are inoffensive-looking and have been greatly indulged. Were it not for their roles in the HP series, I doubt they would have been cast in anything very much.

Triphazards · 11/01/2022 14:29

@CuriousaboutSamphire

See Mickey Rooney...
If Alan Ladd could stand on a box, it's good enough this Radcliffe guy.
Triphazards · 11/01/2022 14:33

I've seen some bloody attractive fast food cuisinieres.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/01/2022 14:33

We need a list of Box Standing Actors Smile

Tom Cruise - obviously!
