Who the hell is Tom Harwood?

because he's really being ratioed on Twitter

twitter.com/tomhfh and twitter.com/tomhfh/status/1478035571146727425 in particular

He seems to have waded in on the trans/schools row. He isn't listening to the many, many replies and is doubling down in the weirdest way.

He comes across as being more of a libertarian than a conservative, wanting to shift the balance in favour of individual rights and freedoms rather than those of the group. When the group is of woman, he appears to find it satisfying to tip the balnce in favour of particular individuals.

GoodieMoomin · 06/01/2022 10:48

Getting plenty of mileage out of his "consistently individualist" views, isn't he?

Plenty of straw people for him to defeat, and no understanding of the position of women's rights advocates, but lots of lovely sunlight. Keep going, Tom!

nauticant · 06/01/2022 10:57

It's interesting how, if you go along the spectrum of conservatism, the support for TWAW falls from the "wet" end, is at a low across the middle, which is where most of the people are, and then rises again at the end where you'll find the women-belong-in the-home conservatives (in the form of woman=gender) and libertarians.

Also in the New Stataesman, from Rachel Cunliffe:
www.newstatesman.com/comment/2022/01/progressives-prefer-political-purity-to-winning-the-culture-war

"Owen Jones – the polar opposite of Harwood in terms of political allegiance – has been making the exact same arguments for years. So have hundreds of trans rights activists and, indeed, most of the Labour Party...So you might expect the progressives to come to Harwood’s defence, sharing his clip and welcoming him to their side. Instead, tumbleweed."

Tom Harwood has, in a sense, done us all a favour in discrediting the idea that questioning or opposing trans rights activism is inherently right wing.

Someone should link him Jackie Doyle-Price‘s piece in the Times today. A tonic to his article of nonsense.

334bu · 06/01/2022 14:15

Interesting take in the New Statesman. Thanks for link.

DrudgeJedd · 06/01/2022 16:03

Tom showing himself up again, wonder who the refuge worker lolling in the screenshot is? Not terribly professional behaviour from either of them. Of course it could be completely fictional, I know Tom and I know that he lies as easily as breathing.

Who the hell is Tom Harwood?
KittenKong · 06/01/2022 16:32

I suspect it’s all made up.

Scraggythang · 06/01/2022 16:37

Even making stuff up and he can’t drum up much support from people hold the exact same views on this subject… it’s a conundrum…

ShagMeRiggins · 06/01/2022 17:12

@WalkOnGildedSplinters

I think TH can be added to the list of gay male misogynists who seem to have such rage when women talk about this issue and refuse to shut up.

James Max, Peter Tatchell, Owen Jones, Michael Cashman, Ben Cohen, Benjamin Butterworth, Adrian Harrop. There’s probably more I’ve forgotten about.

Is he gay? I haven’t seen or heard him say that.
vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 06/01/2022 17:37

When you think GB News will offer Posie a job?

Enough4me · 06/01/2022 17:43

@DrudgeJedd well that refuge worker has me convinced too. Tom has research that shows he is clearly right, let's just make things a free for all.

Why were facilities even created for women, it's not like we're physically smaller than men and men are statistically more violent to women, because if Tom is so well researched he'd be aware of issues if they existed.

roarfeckingroarr · 06/01/2022 17:44

I bet he wouldn't have sex with a trans man (Tom being a gay man for avoidance of doubt)

Enough4me · 06/01/2022 18:04

I expect Tom can find a lesbian who accepts sexual relations with intact TWs though and doesn't understand what the fuss is about. It will definitely not be a lesbian, honest.

DrudgeJedd · 06/01/2022 18:16

Christ alive stop talking about him having sex SadConfused

That’s an astute observation. Interesting.

Like a sort of non Bell curve?

Like the opposite of where all the people are but an absolute match for 'who is shouting at whom on Twitter?'

Surely she's already had a call?

Tom is either a liar (if he made that up himself) or a moron (if someone else made it up.)

Not mutually exclusive possibilities but at least one of the two has to be the case.

And it's worth noting what an extremely unpleasant fantasy life the author of that fiction has. They fantasise about deceiving dozens of traumatised women and then laughing about it.

He has form for “satirical” campaigns. Thinking specifically of the NUS days.

Hey, it got him noticed then.

He needs to decide how to comport himself, and what he wants to achieve. That does take time (not excusing him because of his age, just remembering my 24-year-old self. Though I didn’t have a national platform at the time, thank fuck).

Enough4me · 07/01/2022 00:21

It's getting him noticed, but when I read his comments I just think knob. Maybe that's the impact he's going for as it's all about creating noise and sod his reputation.

Enough4me · 07/01/2022 10:12

@allmywhat, what if Tom is a lying moron?
They are not mutually exclusive?

I don't think a solid reputation is a useful concept today to the majority. It's been replaced by a quick are you in/out, verified/ non- verified judgement. (But they'd not call it judgement : God forbid being judged as "judgy."😂)
