What has Stewart Lee done?

concernedfriend500 · 04/01/2022 08:49

I see lots of people on Twitter are slagging off Stewart Lee because he listed a lot of non-woke folk like Graham Linehan in his "pedal bin" of people he doesn't like. What is his public stance on the Trans Rights campaign though? I've not heard/read anything but I've probably missed it.

He spent the entire show alienating every section of the audience by saying how crap we were and that we weren’t laughing loud enough.

Was this the first time you saw him?

My thoughts too because that's a pretty central part of his act.

I saw him yesterday and he was shit. People were walking out and he seemed a sad bitter man. He is the talk of the festival as the news has broken that he split with his wife in 2021 and he is now “friendly” with Rosie Holt.

He spent the entire show alienating every section of the audience by saying how crap we were and that we weren’t laughing loud enough. His second half rambled on then petered out, he cut a joke short as the sound of tumbleweed was louder than the silence and then he walked off the stage and that was the end of the show. The Mumsnet reference is that allegedly someone posted his home address on a thread and the next comment was “I live near there and his house is nice” as if to say silly wimmin vapid brains all they think about is front lawns and curtains.

When we left the venue the men behind us were saying how bad the show was.

So, Stewart, we know you’re reading this Good luck with your ever decreasing fan base.

😀

I hope the show gets reviewed!

foolishone · 17/08/2023 07:30

This isn't a new show though, he's been touring it for ages and I've heard it's brilliant. So maybe the festival edit isn't great or bad night or maybe it's just not for you OP.

SerendipityJane · 17/08/2023 07:30

Every time I have seen him, his main gripe is about being too popular and longing to get back to the days of just him and broadsheet journalists.

TheGreatATuin · 17/08/2023 07:32

Did someone really post his address on here? I don't think I've ever seen anyone do that on MN. It seems odd.
I was invited to go see him by a friend recently and said no thanks on the basis of this thread.
In light of the Glinner cancellation, it strikes me that it's a good example of how this isn't a 'both sides' conflict.
I simply said 'no, thanks' and didn't go.
The idea of calling up all his venues and harassing them into cancelling his entire show is unfathomable. I fully support his right to stand on a stage and be as unfunny as he likes.
Perhaps its inevitable that this would hit comedians so hard. If they're no longer allowing themselves to question the absurd and see the funny side of popular culture, even in their own heads, then I imagine it must get very hard to come up with a good comedy set.

Woman2023 · 17/08/2023 07:42

It might not be one of his better shows, this is a review from January. I quite want to see him again to see what the JK Rowling joke is.

www.buzzmag.co.uk/stewart-lee-basic-lee-cardiff-comedy-live-review/

Anything he says about mumsnet on stage is likely to be exaggerated or made up for comic effect, him being a comedian.

yeah, not a thing

I do think that comedy you have to train yourself to like, in the manner of getting used to olives say, probably isn’t comedy

awkward for you that you fancy him Eresh.

LadyWhineglass · 17/08/2023 07:53

It was the first time, yes, but I read a review of his show which then turned out to be from 2013.

The JK Rowling joke. To paraphrase: “JK Rowling would write [insert bland statement that could potentially lead to sexual innuendo]. JK Rowling as Robert Galbraith would write… no, it’s not what you think five minutes later of saying no it’s not what you think implying it could be a throbbing member or a reference to her trans views…. Five minutes later the punchline Robert Galbraith wouldn’t have said that because Robert Galbraith is a woman and women can’t write gory crime horror.

Make of that what you will.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/08/2023 07:54

I've grown out of that in the last 20 years or so Grin

BezMills · 17/08/2023 08:34

yeah I think he walks a tightrope with the whole telling the audience they're shit thing. If there are enough people willing to go along, then it becomes hilarious. If not, you get what you get the other night. I think he goes so deep into that schtick, that it's all or nothing.

inkjet · 17/08/2023 08:37

I remember seeing someone posting the specific area he lived in, ie you could probably narrow it down to several streets from it, but not his address.

Brechtian alienation. It's a very high risk strategy. No one is equipped to review him ....

RoyalCorgi · 17/08/2023 08:59

Insulting the audience - or half of the audience - is a big part of the joke. I don't think it's really a high-risk strategy, as audiences tend to love it.

Not entirely surprised he and BC have split up, though. A couple of years ago when I saw her, she was looking quite fit and glamorous, in the way that middle-aged women do when they get divorced and decide to live a little.

TheClogLady · 17/08/2023 09:02

He looks like he has a blood pressure problem.

Hey, Stew! If you are reading this (and it seems you like to hate read mumsnet) get down the GP asap. They probably have an automated machine in reception so you won’t need to wait for an appointment.

TheClogLady · 17/08/2023 09:06

Random anecdote:

Many years ago I knew the chap who played the Curious Orange.

Nice chap but a raging alcoholic.

I went to his flat after the pub once and he made me watch the final episode of Brookside on home recorded VHS.

I might be the only mumsnetter who thinks Stewart Lee is very funny.....I love that audience alienation thing he does....

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 17/08/2023 09:25

It’s good that someone likes him! He comes across as quite an unhappy person

I don’t wish him ill, I just wish he was a bit smarter and / or less of a hypocrite

I have always found Stewart Lee hilarious, which makes it all the more disappointing that he has joined the mob of woman-haters. I don't care about the others, as most of them are tossers anyway.

The thing about Stewart Lee is that when he did Jerry Springer the Opera, he really offended the religious right, who brought legal action to stop it touring, and he also received a lot of abuse. I think he lost money as a result. So you'd expect him to have some sympathy with people like JK Rowling and Graham Linehan, who are in a similar situation from a zealous, censoring mob. But he's apparently not capable of making that small imaginative leap.

TheClogLady · 17/08/2023 09:43

It’s that disappointment that makes him a subject for discussion really.

There are thousands of sexist comedians, hundred of anti-women-activist-apologists but we talk about Stewart Lee because we used to like him.

Perhaps pretending to be hated for so many years takes its toll on a person’s psyche?

BlackForestCake · 17/08/2023 09:57

Stewart Lee's audience are middle-class London progressives who think they're clever. He'd be playing to empty venues if he went against their religion.

duc748 · 17/08/2023 10:24

Haven't RTWF, but I never liked Stewart Lee. I'd never really thought about it before, but maybe he is liked more by men than women? Anyway, I never liked his schtick, which always seemed dishonest to me. the subtext always seems to be, if you don't think I'm funny, it's because you're not cool enough to 'get' me. And the whole slagging off his audience, and the Guardian-readers all lapping it up. And the punching down. Attacking soft targets like Michael Macintyre or that Russell Howard. Yeah, I'm not wild about either, they're pretty mainstream and dull, but millions do like them, and pack their shows. I'm sure they don't care in the slightest about being mocked by SL.

I'm actually pleased now, cos I feel I have some validation. Thank you, thread! 😆

KittenKong · 17/08/2023 10:27

I’ve been dragged along to a few of his shows. Smug, self satisfied and rather boring. I met him at a signing years ago (they gave dvds as part of the ticket of the show but you had to line up to receive it from the man himself and I got ‘horrible snarky little man’ vibes from him).

I also thought b’brag was an utter tool. Ahhhh my radar is usually correct!
