What has Stewart Lee done?

I see lots of people on Twitter are slagging off Stewart Lee because he listed a lot of non-woke folk like Graham Linehan in his "pedal bin" of people he doesn't like. What is his public stance on the Trans Rights campaign though? I've not heard/read anything but I've probably missed it.

And you are course are so much smarter than everybody to see through this charade....

It’s not a blistering comeback if it takes you 7 months to come up with it.

ScreamingMeMe · 02/04/2023 16:01

Well, Stewart Lee punchlines always take a while to arrive and are often quite weak when they do.

You forgot the endless repetition ... (yes, there is a subtext)

Yes - he thinks it’s a ‘you didn’t see that coming!’ Way. But it’s really more a ‘I’d forgotten when you started that’ way.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 02/04/2023 17:05

It’s the tedious smugness that gets me every time.

yeah, much, much (MUCH) smarter than you

turns out richard herring was the one who made them not shit. who would have seen that coming?

Backstreets · 02/04/2023 18:39

I used to love him, I’m so disappointed. Just another male “feminist” after all.

Nostradamus and his (yes I said his, I am respectful of pronouns) flighty horse certainly didn't

That word is not acceptable here. I’m reporting your post for transphobia.

Musomama1 · 03/04/2023 08:10

Nostradamus played by Emma Kennedy, wonder what she makes of lesbians with penises?

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 03/04/2023 08:21

Kennedy’s an active Lib Dem according to Wiki, so I’m guessing she keeps her genuine thoughts about lesbians with penises to herself

how very liberal her colleagues must be

Sadly SL, like a lot of terribly privileged people who work in comedy, seems to need to compensate for said privilege by reinforcing the current social justice dogmas - without thought or integrity. He'll never be impacted by lofty abstract ideas like 'sex is a social construct' being forced into actual policy.

It's partly "Do it to Julia!" and partly signaling status to others in his bubble of privilege who can afford to believe we can live in a utopia (if only those facist, middle-aged women would just stop banging on about VAWG.)

I mean, safeguarding is sooo boring. No glory to be had there.

RoyalCorgi · 03/04/2023 10:36

True. It's a fine example of a luxury belief. Having said that, he has a daughter who could well be impacted by eg having to share a changing room with a male-bodied person, or if she's interested in sport, having a male person join her football team or compete against her in swimming or running. So perhaps he hasn't thought about the implications for his daughter, or perhaps he has thought about them and doesn't care. Or perhaps his top priority is signalling his virtue to his audience, over and above any regard for his family. His wife, Bridget Christie, shares the same views as him so I suppose she doesn't much care either.

You might enjoy this - Andrew Lawrence's riposte to Kathy Burke's rant about "woke", but it applies equally to people like Stewart Lee:

Agree 100%.

He has children so you'd think he'd care about safeguarding but i think he probably cares more about his status and being smug.

I know what he’s getting at in that clip RoyalCorgi but his delivery is so patronising and self-important that I would love to see Kathy Burke post a response in her inimitable style - possibly along the lives of ‘Fxxk off you insufferable cxxt’ 😂

You’ve got to admit that ‘woke’ is often used as a slur by hard-of-thinking people who think that people are spoiling their fun by not allowing them to tell racist and sexist jokes? I think that’s who Kathy was having a go at.

(Those people annoy me just as much as people who throw ‘Karen’ about.)

I disagree with you but I’m interested in your suggestions for a better descriptor for the followers of the new religion?

FalloverBoy · 03/04/2023 13:20

Oh I don’t know ClogLady. I haven’t got any answers. Just throwing in my tuppence worth because I bloody love Kathy Burke and would like to think, in this particular instance, she might just be railing against the type of people who I might not want to get stuck in a lift with either.

And I clicked on that link and just sighed at listening to another man talking in that know-all tone, so I found myself switching off from the content of what he was actually saying. Maybe I’m just getting fed up of watching all these polemicists online with their ring lights and podcast set-ups thinking they’re social commentators of importance. Maybe if I read a transcript of what he said it wouldn’t be so irritating.

Having one of those days.

TheClogLady · 03/04/2023 13:24

Kathy is a massive disappointment especially in comparison to her former co star James Dreyfus 😥

TheKeatingFive · 03/04/2023 15:34

James is a legend, in fairness

Backstreets · 03/04/2023 15:53

My pet theory is that his kids are the direct cause of this. Aren’t they young teens? With rich arty lefty parents living in London. Wouldn’t be surprised if they had trans friends and told dear old mum and dad all about how jk Rowling literally don’t want their mates to exist.

BooseysMom · 20/04/2023 14:03

We saw him recently and yes, he's "let himself go', but being out of shape gives him extra material opportunities and the way he can laugh at himself is great. I know not many are Lee fans on mumsnet and he did go out of his way to bring that up..something about his address being posted and a little man in a red woolly cardigan in his attic?! He claims he isn't on the Internet and a friend told him. "Isn't it awful what's happened to you!" But I did notice he looked miserable and not well even when he was doing book signing. I wanted so much to shout "tell us about the prawns Stew!" But chickened out
But, for all the hatred aimed at him here, his shows are still sold out and we still enjoyed it.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 20/04/2023 14:15

‘Hatred’

aka thinking he’s a bit shit
