What has Stewart Lee done?

I see lots of people on Twitter are slagging off Stewart Lee because he listed a lot of non-woke folk like Graham Linehan in his "pedal bin" of people he doesn't like. What is his public stance on the Trans Rights campaign though? I've not heard/read anything but I've probably missed it.

‘Hatred’

aka thinking he’s a bit shit

Ok if you like. But imo he's very clever at his craft.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 20/04/2023 14:31

Different strokes for different folks innit? From reading your post above I think you saw a gig where you didn’t really understand what the guy was on about in parts and thought he seemed under the weather

thats’s not going to have me reaching for my credit card to book tickets

but I’m glad you enjoyed yourself. It’s all personal taste at the end of the day

We saw him recently and yes, he's "let himself go', but being out of shape gives him extra material opportunities and the way he can laugh at himself is great. I know not many are Lee fans on mumsnet and he did go out of his way to bring that up..something about his address being posted and a little man in a red woolly cardigan in his attic?! He claims he isn't on the Internet and a friend told him. "Isn't it awful what's happened to you!" But I did notice he looked miserable and not well even when he was doing book signing. I wanted so much to shout "tell us about the prawns Stew!" But chickened out
But, for all the hatred aimed at him here, his shows are still sold out and we still enjoyed it.

I've seen him perform several times and thought he was extremely funny. I'm still not going to forgive him for his moral cowardice on this issue.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 20/04/2023 14:40

Yes, I should be clear that there are lots of comedians I don’t think are funny about whom I have nothing to say. I’m reserving this degree of vitriol for Lee because he styles himself as a bit clever and has adopted the flat earthier position on gender because (I suppose), it’s MUCH better for his ongoing career

I don’t enjoy finger wagging from anyone but it’s particularly annoying from a massive, massive hypocrite

He's definitely a bit shit.

PleasantBirthday · 20/04/2023 14:40

I just...I can't find someone who seems to consider themselves intelligent and insightful and unafraid to say what they really think but shows such a shallow understanding of what GC women think. Criticise and disagree with us by all means, I don't require agreement, but at least understand what you disagree with. The laziness is unfunny to me, because the joke can't be incisive.

AndrexPuppy · 20/04/2023 14:43

He’s a sneery twerp.

heathspeedwell · 20/04/2023 15:10

I think he's gifted and hilarious. That's why I'm even more disappointed that he hasn't bothered to stop and think about women's rights and how this issue affects us all.

He's let himself down by being too arrogant to question his own beliefs.

We all get things wrong sometimes. Being left wing and idealistic in your teens can lead to a very blinkered outlook in middle age.

Many of us here have had the insight to reflect that we were wrong when we tried to be 'kind' on this issue. Prioritising the desires of a minority of male people backfires spectacularly on the rights of the majority of women and girls. And it affects the most vulnerable women and girls most harshly.

Where's his 'kindness' for women locked up in prison with male rapists?

Where's is kindness for religious women and girls who can no longer use their local sports centre because there are male people in the changing room?

Where's his kindness for survivors of sexual abuse who can't use their local rape crisis centre? Or who feel scared when they hear a male voice inside what should be women-only toilets?

Abhannmor · 20/04/2023 16:14

I've always hated him but I can't remember why. As Alexei Sayle said about Not the Nine O'clock News.

He's quiet on this. I'm hoping it's because he is a good dialectical materialist and Socialist who wants to be nice.

And not a two faced revisionist liberal cringebag and sell out.

BooseysMom · 20/04/2023 16:18

All this is as may be, but he's still an excellent comedian and word master. Maybe I'm a simpleton who doesn't understand half of what he's saying as a pp implied! I actually don't give a fcuk though! I like him. Deal with it.

bishophaha · 20/04/2023 16:24

I think he's fantastic as a comedian - when he's good it really resonates. I've been going to his gigs for decades. Although there are some shows I positively hated too. I still think he's a dick to think that a woman isn't a woman because of their sex but because of whatever behaviours or feelings it's meant to be.

Or basically what RoyalCorgi said: I've seen him perform several times and thought he was extremely funny. I'm still not going to forgive him for his moral cowardice on this issue.

I have no idea what that has to do with Mumsnet. Something seems to have got lost in the waffle.

TheClogLady · 20/04/2023 16:57

@heathspeedwell I reckon you could title this bit, ‘A Sonnet for Billy Bragg’

”We all get things wrong sometimes. Being left wing and idealistic in your teens can lead to a very blinkered outlook in middle age.”

soberfor15years · 02/05/2023 09:04

DH saw him on the weekend and apparently he was complaining about MN again. Also took some potshots at JK Rowling. Ugh

KittenKong · 02/05/2023 09:11

Hmmm. Jumping on the bandwagon.

IvyTwines · 02/05/2023 09:11

@Abhannmor "He's quiet on this.". He isn't. I saw one of his stage shows just before the pandemic hit in 2020 and he made a jibe about people (i.e. women) who object to mixed sex toilets. That utter lack of empathy or understanding towards the lived experience of half the human race from someone from the half that has traditionally oppressed them, and he still thinks of himself as some sort of socialist. He can fuck off forever as far as I'm concerned.

Abhannmor · 03/05/2023 10:19

Lee or Sayle ? I know Alexei used to think of Lee as his heir apparent. But he was raised a Communist and they don't believe in gendered souls.

Also he isn't usually afraid of controversy or being unfashionable. His contempt for Owen Jones in their interview was palpable. And he is a Jew who defends his friend Jeremy Corbyn from smears of antisemitism.

Very sad if he has caved.

I also want to know if it's Alexei Sayle. Disappointed if it is, and yet not surprised, given the track record of other lefty men.

Have you noticed how they always talk about toilets? Never about prisons, changing rooms, rape crisis centres, domestic violence refuges, women's sports. They know, I suppose, that those are much more difficult to defend so they don't bother. Cowards.

soberfor15years · 03/05/2023 12:39

No it was definitely Lee, not Sayle

Indeed!

LadyWhineglass · 17/08/2023 00:32

I saw him yesterday and he was shit. People were walking out and he seemed a sad bitter man. He is the talk of the festival as the news has broken that he split with his wife in 2021 and he is now “friendly” with Rosie Holt.

He spent the entire show alienating every section of the audience by saying how crap we were and that we weren’t laughing loud enough. His second half rambled on then petered out, he cut a joke short as the sound of tumbleweed was louder than the silence and then he walked off the stage and that was the end of the show. The Mumsnet reference is that allegedly someone posted his home address on a thread and the next comment was “I live near there and his house is nice” as if to say silly wimmin vapid brains all they think about is front lawns and curtains.

When we left the venue the men behind us were saying how bad the show was.

So, Stewart, we know you’re reading this Good luck with your ever decreasing fan base.

LadyWhineglass · 17/08/2023 00:35

Also, Glinner was supposed to be doing a gig here (Edinburgh) but the venue discovered he was the secret celebrity guest slot and cancelled the whole show.

His extremely dangerous Confused ten minutes of unprepared stand-up on pizza boxes was part of Andrew Doyle's comedy club (un)booking called Comedy Unleashed.

Andrew Doyle yesterday did an interview that's on You Tube with Freddy Gray (Spectator) in which he talks about comedians who do long polemics now, rather than comedy with jokes. I immediately thought of Stewart Lee. (And Lenny Bruce decades ago ...)

Then I read @LadyWhineglass's post and thought, 'yep'.

It's not necessarily Linehan who has lost it - it's the now very very unfunny comedians who adhere to the rules of a cultural consortium, instead of subverting them for laughs, who can't see their way.

What a waste. I used to think he was great. "The values of the Carphone Waterhouse" is inspired and applies to much of the corporate virtue signalling he doesn't want to call out, because he wouldn't dare, even if he had the integrity. Someone I know even told him that I used to fancy him Grin

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/08/2023 01:24

Just to clarify, he's never met me and doesn't know me from Adam so it was "my friend fancies you" with no context Grin

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/08/2023 01:34

Carphone Waterhouse

Confused fuck off autocorrect
