Non binary runner at NYC marathon

So basically this is a gay man competing? There were 16 non binary people competing in the non binary category. I wonder how many were women, especially if there is prize money involved.

It will be fascinating to see what type of non binary people win all the medals in these competitions. It's a real puzzle to work out.... Grin Grin

Scraggythang · 28/11/2021 12:49

Totally meaningless. Man runs race. Big whoop.

sleepwhenidie · 28/11/2021 12:50

Surely this category is a good thing if it means only biological women can participate in the women’s category? It doesn’t say if that’s the case and it also says nothing has been said about prize money though.

KittenKong · 28/11/2021 12:52

So they now have fastest time, fastest women and fastest ‘I-don’t-feel-like-either’ (although my sex is self evident, so I don’t know why I feel the need to mention this)

sleepwhenidie · 28/11/2021 12:56

Is Zackary’s sex obvious? It’s possible they are a trans man, but either way, if it means men aren’t competing in women’s categories I can’t get update about it, the logical extension is to have two or more NB categories and then you start repeating the argument ad infinitum. Focus needs to be on the women’s category and who qualifies for that, nothing else.

sharksarecool · 28/11/2021 13:04

I don't think this new non-binary category will have the effect of keeping males out of the womens category. I think the non-binary category will be used for transmen - who couldn't hope to complete in the men's category. I think we will find that the transwomen will be quite happy continuing to compete in the women's category. Why would they risk competing against females who are taking testosterone when they can get away with competing against women with natural hormone levels?

KittenKong · 28/11/2021 13:06

They just need a bi-binary category now too.

The photos in the article make the sex obvious. Not a transman. I guess it could just become a category for males who don't have the brass neck to identify as a woman but fancy the better odds than they would face in the male category.
Rightsraptor · 28/11/2021 13:29

He did go to Berkeley so we shouldn't be surprised.

MrMrsJones · 28/11/2021 13:32

Ffs men get all of the things, women get none of the things.

We have taken a massive step backwards in every way

ArtemesiaK · 28/11/2021 13:46

Not good enough to compete with men who admit they're men? Don't worry, we'll start a group for no-hopers.....

Shedmistress · 28/11/2021 13:49

Because running against other men meant he suffered humiliation?

Come the fuck on now.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 28/11/2021 13:55

Extraordinary how this NB person presents in an extremely binary way

aliasundercover · 28/11/2021 13:57

But the transmen wouldn't have a chance against any 'AMAB' non-binary runners. What's needed is separate male and female non-binary races :)

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 28/11/2021 13:57

I note that they will shortly announce the qualifying times for the non-binary race. Interesting. Wonder how it will relate to the qualifying time for the women’s race? Either it will be so low that it incentivises any mediocre male to declare themselves NB, or higher and exclude a proposition of women. There is no real world way in which this imaginary category can defy the laws of biological difference between the sexes to be fair to women.

Unless they have a qualifying time for NB bodies with penises which is different from the one for NB bodies with vaginas? That would work.

RandomUsernameHere · 28/11/2021 14:04

He's complaining about not getting prize money for coming first out of a field of 16?

As a PP has said, it will be very interesting to see what the non-binary qualifying times are for the 2022 race.

SimpleHoardOfTruth · 28/11/2021 14:07

WorkingItOut crazy isn't it.

So Zachary was the winner of the NB category with a decent time. But a time that would have placed him #895 in the male race.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 28/11/2021 14:15

Wouldn't it only work if they were natal penis/vagina rather than artificially constructed as part of a transition followed by a realisation of NB status, IYSWIM?

In fact, picking my way through the various non-definitions of man/woman/NB and guidance on how to discuss such sensitive matters, I'm not sure that I can explain what I mean. Hmm

hallouminatus · 28/11/2021 14:19

The qualifying time for 18-34-year-old males is 2:53. For 18-34-year-old females, it's 3:13.

26-year-old Harris finished at 3:09, in 1033rd place overall.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 28/11/2021 14:37

Ah interesting digging. So Harris wouldn’t have qualified for the men’s race?

SimpleHoardOfTruth · 28/11/2021 14:46

For anyone not familiar, races like this are run by keen or professional runners who gain a place by virtue of running a fast enough time in another recognised event ("qualifying"); but then there are thousands of others who commit to fundraising for a charity in return for a place (and many marathons also have a ballot in addition to these routes in).

Yes, as PP says, Zackary Harris finished in overall 1033rd place.

The gap in finishing time for other members of the NB category is very interesting.

They can't run fast enough to keep up with the men.
