Christmas cards: which charities acknowledge women exist?

MinervaBoudicca · 14/11/2021 12:39

So, in the past would happily buy cards from oxfam, amnesty etc but as they seem to have doubts that the female sex exists, I’m having to select my Xmas cards more carefully this year.
Samaritans seem good. Is there one for female refuges or similar?

Parkinson's UK. No bollocks.
My husband has Parkinson's and it's total rubbish. Diagnosed a few years ago at 48. Now in advanced P, beginning dementia.
They are making real progress, and their support is excellent.

Maybe water aid?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 17/11/2021 19:14

Starts strong then 'those who menstruate', 'people with periods'.

They do actually care about actual women and girls though

Looks like Women's Aid know what a woman is (or at least, I am hopeful).

It's good to hear about cancer research uk coming back from the sex-neutral brink. I was a bit annoyed to hear womankind might have gone the other way. But I don't know if the fact their social media tweeted something pro trans in one of the many trans weeks really means anything. I had a look on twitter and their trabs awareness week tweet was OK to me - it was about respecting pronouns, and was from a Ugandan organisation that supports lesbians and trans men. That sounds like a more sensible female-centred approach. Idk I might be clutching at traws!

Manderleyagain · 17/11/2021 20:42

Oh no I take it back about womankind. They've published a link to glaad ally tips, and they are nasty loons.

Plan is fab! They have a 'because I am a girl' campaign, do tons around period poverty and FGM, including things like working with the local population to really uderstand customs and the significance of FGM to be able to replace it with something that can work in the particular culture and doesn't involve any harm.

Do Plan sell Christmas cards at all?

ChristinaXYZ · 19/11/2021 10:26

ARC - Antenatal Results and Choices

www.arc-uk.org/support-us/arc-christmas-cards

They use 'parents' on the above page because obviously both parents are bereaved but they do use 'women' when talking about pregnancy elsewhere on the site...

"All pregnant women in the UK are offered antenatal screening tests. Most women will be reassured by the results but some (approximately 5%) will be given worrying news and face difficult decisions about diagnostic testing. It is your choice to have any test. Learn more about antenatal screening and diagnosis."

They're also not a fashionable charity because obviously many women go on to have a termination after a diagnosis of a serious illness or disability on their unborn children so it is hard to talk about because the subject is potentially distressing , hard to get businesses to lend support, and hard to raise money for so they are a very good cause.

I'm afraid not that I can see.

Why is a charity wasting money from donations on membership of one of Stonewall's expensive schemes?

Very good question. Like the ones whose top staff are on huge salaries. That’s why I prefer the small local charities.

EnidFrighten · 01/12/2021 07:49

Uh, even if charities have trans-inclusive wording, if they work with women and girls it means just that. They will be changing the wording to protect their reputations. I think you're being petty.

Snailhaterz2 · 01/12/2021 10:02

Another shout-out for Plan - I'm a long-term supporter and they're very clear about the sex-based disadvantages that girls face. I haven't even checked if they're Stonewall supporters, but if they are it hasn't affected how they talk about the excellent work they do!

@Chersfrozenface

I'm giving up buying charity cards. Instead I'll buy from small-scale craftspeople, preferably local.
Yeah, me too. All the difficulties around these charities means I don’t get charity cards any more, but try to buy from small printmakers and individual artists instead.

I can support women’s charities in other ways, and support artists and print collectives via cards instead.

This is what I’m doing for the very small number of people I know who would feel the lack of a Christmas card, and donating the money I would previously have spent on more cards to Southall Black Sisters.
foxgoosefinch · 01/12/2021 10:17

Actually if anyone does want to support a hugely worthwhile charity, I notice you can also get cards from here:

petalscharity.org/

It’s a small independent charity offering counselling to women and families who’ve suffered stillbirths and neonatal bereavement. In many NHS trusts there are (unbelievably!) no funded services providing this!

I don’t know anything about their “diversity” policies but they do really great hands-on proper work for parents (majority but not exclusively women, as dads and couples can access counselling as well, but they are very woman run and woman focused). Also extremely professional and down to earth.
