Every time I see this stuff, I just feel more and more bafflement and despair.

Do these people really think that a male-bodied person can have PMS?

Who are these young women rushing in to 'be kind' and share their own experiences?

@CiaoForDiNiaoSaur

If transwomen can identify into PMS and period cramps can I identify out of them? I'm sat here right now feeling like my insides are falling out and wondering which of my kitchen knives would do the most harm to my arm.* Thanks PMDD. I've also been vile to everyone today as a result of PMS.
  • please don't be alarmed. I never act on this thought. Its just an intrusive thought I get.

See arse javelin :(

Isn't it interesting that I've learnt more about things that women can get with periods, and menopause, than in real life from anywhere ever.

On periods. I saw a thing that said the whole ejecting lining of uterus thing was not relevant. What periods are about is tummy ache, irrationality and chocolate.

So there you go.

NiceGerbil · 04/11/2021 19:26

Don't know what see was supposed to be!

Until here I had no idea that arse javelin was a thing. Which I recognised as soon as read about.

Also I never connected the runs with period but yes lucky me. Also related to the biology I forget how. So that was good to know.

@HoardingSamphireSaurus

It's all self hypnosis, what, in real women, would be called hysteria. Let's see if anyone wants to coopt that term!
Think about why removal of the uterus is not called a uterectomy, but a hysterectomy.
Haudyourwheesht · 04/11/2021 20:22

Maybe if men are getting endometriosis now some actual medical research will go into curing it.

Sleepyquest · 04/11/2021 20:24

Get a hysterectomy... oh wait

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 04/11/2021 20:27

And here’s me thinking that being postmenopausal meant I was done with periods.

Today I have a sore belly.

The excuse that I work with is so useless I confess to be irritated beyond belief and I have been having lovely thoughts about him getting his jotters which he might find irrational.

And I want my body weight in chocolate.

I must be on my period.

Who knew?

I read this tweet a while ago
twitter.com/dogmomlexa/status/1442904725565804545?s=21

‘What a fucking waste of time that was. I’ve never felt so angered, humiliated and talked down to by a medical professional. Worse endo appointment ever’

This person went to the DOCTOR about endo pain (because endo can’t mean anything other than endometriosis, surely?) and was surprised when the Dr wasn’t sympathetic? What a waste of time!

daisyjgrey · 04/11/2021 20:51

I haven't read the whole thread but if they've transitioned to the point of taking hormones etc, that can cause PMS/PMT type symptoms as the hormones fluctuate.

I can't describe how angry this makes me, as someone who lives with endometriosis which took years to diagnose
KittenKong · 04/11/2021 21:00

What a thread of... strange people. Do they know what they are discussing? Are doctors free in Canada (because they really need to send out bills for this type of thing).

Haudyourwheesht · 04/11/2021 21:09

I've just scrolled through that person's timeline. God it makes me desperately sad.

Gosports · 04/11/2021 21:10

@Haudyourwheesht yep, I went down a bit of a rabbit hole reading trans Twitter accounts. The self obsession is unbelievable.

Nope. Endo appointment as in "appointment with an Endocrinologist" ie hormone doctor, rather than "appointment about endometriosis".
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/11/2021 07:50

I had endometriosis before the menopause (now hoping it's gone) but I read endo there as referring to endocrinology, the medical specialism for hormone disorders and prescribing. More likely, surely?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/11/2021 07:51

Cross post!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/11/2021 08:05

Think about why removal of the uterus is not called a uterectomy, but a hysterectomy.

A boring old pedant with a Classics degree writes: that would be because the -ectomy suffix comes from Greek and some (not all) medical words ending in -ectomy use the Greek word for the organ being removed. Appendectomy is a notable exception. Hysterectomy isn't. Uterus is a Latin word. Hystera is a Greek word.

Gosports · 05/11/2021 08:17

Ohhhhh! Ok, well fair enough then. But my point about the self obsession still stands!

To add to this, the term hysteria is derived from the Greek word for uterus. The ancient Greeks thought that the uterus could wander around the body, causing different symptoms depending on where it lodged. The term was particularly used for symptoms which we now recognise as being related to mental distress, such as changes in mood, insomnia, agitation, anxiety, shortness of breath and racing heart. So hysteria was associated with the female sex right from the time this diagnostic label was first applied.

Fair point, hadn't considered that, thank you
IrisAtwood · 05/11/2021 08:59

@JellySaurus

Hysterectomy isn’t derived from the word hysteria.

It’s actually the other way round, hysteria is named after the uterus because it was thought that anxiety and emotional behaviour were due to a ‘wandering uterus’.

Hyster- comes from the Greek hystéra, meaning “womb,” “uterus.”

JellySaurus · 05/11/2021 12:52

I am happy to be linguistically corrected. (Genuinely. I love etymology.) But my point remains valid: that hysteria is forcibly teamed with something fundamentally female.
