Strange times when Vlad is making more sense than our own leader.

On gender issues, Putin said liberals in the West are looking to terminate designations like "mother, father, family or gender differences," something he called "basic."

Putin also reportedly said children being "taught that a boy can become a girl and vice versa" is "on the verge of a crime against humanity."

What a time to be alive!

Wow! Strange times indeed.

LastSummerHere · 23/10/2021 20:00

Putin is very much coming from a Christian stance I think...gender ideology is toxic to the family and so he won't countenance it.

SilverGlassHare · 23/10/2021 20:01

God, I hate being on the same side as people like Putin. It gives the TRAs such ammo.

MrsMadderRose · 23/10/2021 22:12

Of course no one wants to find themselves on team Putin, but it’s interesting that he’s coming at this from the POV of criticising western liberalism. He’s right that this is coming from such a bourgeois, first-world mindset though it’s sold as being “inclusive”. But I agree his conservative and religious values have a lot to do with it too - but aside from him being a dictator, I don’t think having conservative and religious values is a crime. Lots of people do and I defend their right to think you can’t change sex and only females are mothers, even if their religion does inform that.

As for his last point, he’s right. And in that case, it’s something that anyone can clearly see if they take to woke spectacles off. Telling kids they can change sex and leading them into hugely damaging medication and surgery that the vast majority would be happier without is a very serious and horrific evil. I’m sure in the future pretty much everyone will agree with him on that.

MrsMadderRose · 23/10/2021 22:14

But yes the genderists will have a field day. Makes a change from the far right I guess. This means obviously that the far right are also in league with and funding Putin, like they are GC feminists. Hmm

MishyJDI · 23/10/2021 22:39

Yeah. You kindof should know that your perspective is warped, when you can identify with Putin's beliefs. Perhaps time for many to reflect on that. But I doubt they will. Too tied in to being dinosaurs.

Needmoresleep · 23/10/2021 22:43

What is this obsession with ‘sides’

Believing that you can’t change sex is pretty widespread. Not surprising that Putin (insert a whole raft of random names) agrees. More surprising that some people don’t.

Whatwouldscullydo · 23/10/2021 22:58

If he said humans couldn't breath under water without air tanks would you agree with him? Or would you drown trying to prove him wrong?

He didn't though did he. You miss my point. x Hypotheticals dont make your argument sound. Sorry. Fail. Next?
Whatwouldscullydo · 23/10/2021 23:09

Facts don't stop being true because
You don't like who said them.

Needmoresleep · 23/10/2021 23:10

So Mishy, do you believe people can change sex?

How?

Bollindger · 23/10/2021 23:12

Putin is right, it isn't true.
Who knew Putin would be the child in the Emperors new clothes story.

LobsterNapkin · 23/10/2021 23:14

I don't think Putin is religious as such. With the demise of communism he sees religion as an ideology that he can use to bind society together and create a sense of identification and purpose. As well as an established power structure he can co-opt.

But he is very much a proponent of the stable social institutions like the family, and he's not a dummy and would see gender ideology for the stupid idea it is. But even better, it's a great way to show his own people why liberal democracy and western views are bad, dangerous, and foolish.

Cherryana · 23/10/2021 23:15

Is Robert Winston warped when he says you can’t change sex?

Does saying something which aligns with biological fact beyond a persons beliefs to truth?

Is it possible to tell the truth in some areas and act in hypocritical and violent ways?

Can you?

Cherryana · 23/10/2021 23:15

Missing the word ‘go beyond belief to truth’

NotBadConsidering · 23/10/2021 23:17

That fact that Putin says it doesn’t make it evil, it makes it a universal truth that evil people also see as well as non-evil people. Like water is wet.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/10/2021 23:20

I don't align with Putins beliefs (insofar as I can make them out from that report.)
His banning of same sex marriage and homophobia are abhorrent. I don't agree western liberalism is obsolete. I don't object to 'gender fluidity' - so long as there's no conflation of gender and sex, and impairment of women's rights. People should be free to be any 'gender' they want.

I agree with him on the scientific, observable, verifiable fact (not 'belief') that humans can't change sex. And it's certainly no kindness to children to delude them otherwise.

MishyJDI · 23/10/2021 23:23

Needmoresleep . Lols. That is a boring question.

Sex has to do with chromosones. Gender is more complex. Sex alone is more complex then pure X & Y. There really is a spectrum involved, and it has always been there. Dinosaurs looking to the past, well, end up as bones. Meanwhile the rest of society and science is seeing human biology as more complex then A and B.

Libertaire · 23/10/2021 23:25

@LobsterNapkin

Correct.

Putin doesn’t give a toss about women’s rights. Or about the rights of trans people for that matter. What he does care about is convincing the Russian people that his brand of undemocratic authoritarian nationalism is preferable to decadent western liberalism.

Highwind · 23/10/2021 23:25

Reposting this for anyone who is confused about what sex is or is under the impression that sex is a spectrum.

theparadoxinstitute.com/blog/2021/04/10/what-are-sexes/

MrsMadderRose · 23/10/2021 23:30

Sex isn’t a spectrum, but even if it was, why would that mean you can decide you’re somewhere on the spectrum that you are not? Race is a spectrum, but do you think that means if you are white you can just decide you’re black? And that you should be given free medication to change your skin colour and other cosmetic effects? And that as these are aspects of what we call race, you have actually changed race and people who don’t think so just don’t understand modern science?
