I'm disappointed - Zoe Williams on language

An infuriating article smearing women for not wanting the word mother to be excised from discussions around childbirth. We're apparently right wingers who don't believe trans people exist.

That tweet was horrible. On the other hand, it's classic ZW.

StrangeLookingParasite · 16/10/2021 20:07

God I think reading that (ZW piece) lowered my IQ. Hope it's temporary.

FreshFreesias · 16/10/2021 20:12

Zoe Williams is a Vichy feminist.

I clicked on RoyalCorgi’s link and in my early-morning doze I thought I was reading ZW’s piece.

“Actually this is making a lot of sense,” I thought, surprised and wondering if I’d misjudged ZW’s competence in the past. Then I put my glasses on and realised I was reading Graham Linehan’s page.

Thanks, Royal and Glinner. And Genevieve Gluck and StillTish, who wrote this. The heart of the problem, in a nutshell:

The fracturing of women’s selfhood from their sexed bodies that is at the root of gender identity ideology mirrors the splitting of women into objectified, consumable parts depicted in pornography.
When women are not defined as adult human females, they are instead relegated to splintered parts that are made available for possession: a lactating person, a pregnant person, a cervix-haver, a menstruator. All of these terms allow men to not only stake their claim to the female sex but to simultaneously claim that their particular fetish is what truly constitutes womanhood.

Zoe Williams is a Vichy feminist.

Totally.

People like Zoe Williams, Eva Wiseman et al must see what's going on. They must know that trans activists routinely hurl out the most vicious sexualised abuse towards women. I'm sure they will have seen, for example, the "Suck my dick, you TERF cunts" sign yesterday.

And yet they choose to ignore it. They choose to pretend that this is the side of goodness and light. Imagine how little you must care about women's rights, or even about basic human decency, to do that.

Reallyimeanreally2022 · 17/10/2021 11:34

@RainbowCrossing

I've met her. I was with a load of 'deprived' teenagers who she was desperate to impress. They all thought she was an arsehole Grin
I would have paid to see that!

Yes this always baffles me that the "be kind" right-on libfems can compartmentalise that away. Males who claim to be "women" perpetrating obscene penis-related threats at real women who are actually vulnerable to rape, doesn't make them think "hang on a minute... this doesn't seem all that right-on and kind!" And they don't even spot the overt misogyny and age-old male entitlement in that?

Or maybe they do but as the top priority is to be down with the kids and spout whatever the latest woke mantra is, they just have to put up with the nasty taste it leaves in their mouths.

The thing is this can't go on forever because it makes no sense. I don't know how long it will take but there will come a point when those in power realise that the human cost of all this is too appalling and that basing policy on nonsense doesn't work out well. When that happens, I bet these woke women journalists won't still be spouting TWAW and it's right to get rid of the word women and mothers for actual women - they'll default to the new latest right-on thing to say.

Only read first couple pages here, and article.

I don't know anything about Williams.

Things that jumped out for me-

1.There's been loads of male midwives for years. No there hasn't. There are some I know that. I've never seen or met one. 2 children. Sure stats are available.

  1. Grabbing the fact that plenty of women for years have not liked being called mum. Ignoring the actual, well known reasons why. Using that for her own different purposes.
  1. Describing birth as. Extreme I think it was? Erm. That's a bit of a big statement! Ignoring the many factors etc with childbirth, the history. The growing knowledge and disagreements about the whole complex very personal area. Not great.

I mean it was all drivel. But least because the main thrust was these words are not being vanished when they demonstrably are, all over the place.

IntermittentParps · 18/10/2021 08:37

May I ask where the 'Suck my dick, you TERF cunts' sign was being used?
I mean, HOW is that not men verbally abusing women?!?

It was outside the FiLia conference in Portsmouth. Inside, women were talking about their experiences of sexual violence. So very on-point, you might say.

RoyalCorgi, thank you. Just Google Image searched it. Fucking hell.
