Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

AIBU to start a music thread? There are some great female artists out there who explain what it's really like to be a woman. (And it's not about wearing makeup and dresses and looking cute).

I was just trying to be polite! And not get myself in trouble. My point is, that being born as a girl and growing up as a woman we experience so much discrimination. Just for our very existence.

I'm looking for songs about that.

sometimes people who are born with male genitalia realise they are women, I accept that, but they will never ever experience what we go through as women who were born as and live as women. **

Not exactly current (it was released an astonishing 43 years ago) but The Kick Inside, Kate Bush's debut album, is all about being a woman.

pheonixrebirth · 15/10/2021 00:23

"I'm just a girl" by No Doubt
Says it all!

Ilovemycatsomuch · 15/10/2021 00:24

@musicalfrog

I think we are probably reading from the same hymn sheet so to speak! I have no idea how to pm anyone but few free to pm me.

This is a thread to post music and accept with no shame that as women we are discriminated against! It's meant to be a joyful, and maybe slightly angry, thread!!

It is not a thread for people who are not women who think they might like to be women. Because they think women wear make up and pretty dresses etc.

Point of the neneh cherry song....

....girls have to put up with being sex objects before they even know what relationships are 😭

This is a thread to post music about being a woman and the harassment and discrimination we experience.

It's not necessarily meant to be sad or angry....but it might make us feel that way. But generally it's just about expressing how we feel. How people who are not women will probably never understand ConfusedSmile

Amanda Palmer has written some really powerful songs about the female experience. Some would need a trigger warning. But I think I can safely share this one about self acceptance.

I live in Texas so I hear a fair share of country music. It's not my favorite but I tolerate it and I've discovered some interesting songs.

My particular favorite is Loretta Lynn.

I love her songs: The Pill about birth control, Don't Come Home a 'Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind) and Rated X, a song about the double standards for men and women.

That was really pushing the boundaries of conservative attitudes in the early 1970's. I believe a few of her songs were even banned. You've gotta love Loretta.

The Pill:

You wined me and dined me
When I was your girl
Promised if I'd be your wife
You'd show me the world
But all I've seen of this old world
Is a bed and a doctor bill
I'm tearin' down your brooder house
'Cause now I've got the pill
All these years I've stayed at home
While you had all your fun
And every year that's gone by
Another baby's come
There's a gonna be some changes made
Right here on nursery hill
You've set this chicken your last time
'Cause now I've got the pill
This old maternity dress I've got
Is goin' in the garbage
The clothes I'm wearin' from now on
Won't take up so much yardage
Miniskirts, hot pants and a few little fancy frills
Yeah I'm makin' up for all those years
Since I've got the pill
I'm tired of all your crowin'
How you and your hens play
While holdin' a couple in my arms
Another's on the way
This chicken's done tore up her nest
And I'm ready to make a deal
And ya can't afford to turn it down
'Cause you know I've got the pill
This incubator is overused
Because you've kept it filled
The feelin' good comes easy now
Since I've got the pill
It's gettin' dark it's roostin' time
Tonight's too good to be real
Oh, but daddy don't you worry none
'Cause mama's got the pill
Oh, daddy don't you worry none
'Cause mama's got the pill

people who are not women

Do you mean.... men?

I'm sorry OP I'm really not trying to goad and I love the idea of a music thread. But this pussyfooting around speaking plain English with regard to our sex is half the bloody problem! It really sounds like you're afraid to upset someone. Confused

Ilovemycatsomuch · 15/10/2021 01:22

Ok I'm sorry.

I'm scared of getting arrested if I say what I mean!!

This is a thread for women. Females, girls, ladies, women.....people born with vulva and womb.

Not a thread for people with male genitalia who identify as women. And I'm very sorry if I offend anyone by saying that.

This is a thread for women who have always been women who can identify with the discrimination and harassment that we experience every single day.

The reason I started a music thread is because musicians can put our experience in to words so well.

I cannot say that this "is not a thread for people born with male genitalia who identify as women " because I could be arrested for that. I'm scared of being arrested that's why I'm unclear.

My thread is for women who have experienced discrimination for being women and want to share some music and YouTube videos about their experience.

Actually fuck it......my point is that men who transition to female have never ever ever experienced being treated as a 2nd class citizen, sexual harassment from a child....I can't even begin explaining the disadvantage of being a girl......ohhh unless you are growing up with very woke middle class environment!!!

Ilovemycatsomuch · 15/10/2021 01:30

The thread is for women and girls, to post songs about being a woman or a girl.

Generally about how being a girl or woman has made your life harder than if you were a man.

To be honest, I personally find it completely unbelievable that any male could even consider giving up his extreme privilege to become a woman. And even if he does, he still hasn't had the prejudice and stereotypes since the day he was born.

I'm not allowed to say what I think cos I could get arrested.

That's why I'm asking Taylor swift, to talk about the man, and Beyoncé to talk about if I was a boy, and Madonna what it feels like for a girl
