So LOJ has been tweeting a letter from labours shadow minister for women and equality. In the letter she approves of the UCUSussex stance on Kathleen stock plus takes a swipe at the LGB Alliance. Unbelievable

Also, comment piece by the minister for higher and further education, Michelle Donelan:

The comments on the Times article are a joy, pretty much 100% supportive of Stock.

Clymene · 14/10/2021 07:36

Fucking hell, she's thick as mince.

Clymene · 14/10/2021 07:43

I mean for saying that she hasn't read anything Stock has written but she's a bad person for supporting the LGB Alliance and that she agrees with the UCU who is supporting the students who are calling fir Stock to be sacked but doesn't think any action should be taken against her.

Incidentally, Owatemi, who is in favour of puberty blockers being given to children, is a pharmacist

KittenKong · 14/10/2021 07:46

Who is advising these people?

Lovelyricepudding · 14/10/2021 07:48

@LooksGood

How do you enter politics and get to think that people who disagree with you shouldn't be allowed to organise and express their views? Does she think the people sitting opposite her on the green benches were beamed in from Mars or something?
Given Labour Angela Raynor calling Tories "scum" it seems they think they shouldn't be allowed.

The following day five supporters of hers were arrested for assaulting Iain Duncan Smith at the Conservative Conference - calling him "Tory Scum". That is where the current labour behaviour leads.

Selkiesarereal · 14/10/2021 08:00

Just read the Times article and who would have ever thought that the Tories would have a more calm measured response to Labour’s hysteria.

What a strange world we live in but the shutters have finally come off of next eyes and seeing Labour for the party it actually is, a hateful misogynistic one. So politically homeless here in Scotland.

merrymouse · 14/10/2021 08:12

@Chrysanthemum5

Right now I can't see Labour getting back in to power any time soon. And it shocks me that they are so ineffectual- coming up against the tories and the mess they are making Labour should be streets ahead
For me the most striking part of all of this is that they don't seem to care where their policies lead them if they are in a position where they are responsible for creating legislation.

I think the Conservatives were quite happy to pass laws on Self ID until they saw where that led in practice - Among other things being the party responsible for making prisons unisex.

You can't claim to offer an alternative to Boris Johnson's magical thinking if your manifesto is based on Judith Butler.

ScreamingMeMesaur · 14/10/2021 08:19

Jones really is absolutely obessed with "terfs" and LGBA isn't he? I worry for his blood pressure.

Anyway, what a shite, ill-informed letter. Labour really are without hope.

BaronMunchausen · 14/10/2021 08:30

@LizzieSiddal

LGBA have (previously) said that they are not interested in pursuing libel claims, because it distracts time and resources from the work that they want to do

I do understand that, but surely they can’t allow MPs to lie about them. A solicitors letter usually do the trick and we could always do some digging if needs be.

I think it's more distortion than outright lying. Like LGBA's criticism of the ban on conversion therapy is in fact based on TRAs pushing it to ban anything other than affirmation and doping of kids who say they're the opposite sex. And their belief that science says sex is binary, is reinvented as 'reject the very existence of non-binary people'.

Very serious misrepresentation of course. And wilful. Her letter actually joins in with the harassment of Prof Stock.

KittenKong · 14/10/2021 08:34

I just don’t recognise Labour from when I was a child.

Dad was on the local steering committee, believed in everyone having access to medical card, education, housing, support when in need... when did it become ‘I want I want I want - ooohhh rainbows! Fabulous!’. Maybe the decline in heavy industry...

Dad would be horrified - and as an evil imperialist running dog (he owned a business) he would be not welcome anyway I suspect.

merrymouse · 14/10/2021 08:46

As long as he used enough rainbows in his branding he would be fine.

However, he might cause a bit of a stir if he suggested workers should have rights. That really isn't the progressive way.

Cervicalflop · 14/10/2021 09:08

As someone that works within pharmacy I'm bewildered by her stance. Despite what she says publicly, she KNOWS sex is real. Its all just pandering.

Gosports · 14/10/2021 09:11

Emily Thornberry has just been on LBC radio saying that yes, she does believe men can have cervixes, and to say they don’t is transphobic. She thinks we should all stop ‘shouting at each other’, and although she didn’t use the words ‘be kind’, that was her take on it. So disappointing.

PaleGreenGhost · 14/10/2021 09:12

Jfc.

With Boris in power it would be so easy for Labour to present a good enough opposition. But they keep on digging their own hole even deeper.

This sort of makes it worse. So she's not thick. But she is scared, spineless, pandering, or else so utterly caught in religious fervour that she's lost the plot?
Cervicalflop · 14/10/2021 09:21

PaleGreenGhost, yep pretty much how I see it. I feel the same about doctors and other HCPs who deny biological reality. Its all a front.

They all know. Catch them unawares on a different topic - violence against women and girls, forced marriage etc and they default to the correct meanings of women and girls.

I don't think I could be disappointed by Labour now.

I mean I suppose if it came out that the whole shadow front bench had been using their political clout to run a human trafficking empire spanning four continents I'd be mildly surprised but this kind of craven, misguided, mendacious bullshit is exactly what I now expect from them.

I'd be more surprised if, say, 'leading feminist' Jess, said something like, 'women matter' tbh.

KittenKong · 14/10/2021 09:28

There needs to be another DinoWalk...

Taiwo Owatemi is (I believe) 27 so was in university fairly recently, and presumably exposed to all the sex is a spectrum rubbish they are pandering to. Is her apparent inability to understand basic biology possibly a sign of things to come? As more people who have been to university in this climate of science-denying bullshit become MPs, is this the sort of quality of debate we can look forward to seeing more of? I despair sometimes

I think fundamentally for me, Labour just aren't prepared to listen to differentpoints of view or consider evidence from different sources. They are right, everyone else is wrong, end of, shut uo bigots.

It's still quite astonishing to me that the Tories were prepared to listen to feminist left-leaning women (they should definitely do more of this!).

It's still not enough to make me vote Tory, I don't think (although I actually quite like our new-after-years-of-Labour Conservative MP). But it's definitely enough to make me not vote Labour.

Lovelyricepudding · 14/10/2021 09:34

How does this fit with running government on any issue?

I'd have thought Thornberry would have more sense than to scupper every tiny shred of credibility she might have retained by saying something so idiotic I can't even laugh about it. Or maybe I can. Men have cervixes! She's off her head.

As for Owatemi, I want to know who lets these idiots through the selection process. Or maybe I don't even care, in about 4 years I've gone from Labour member to someone who will happily help the campaign against them in my nearest marginal, Warrington North I think is, that's a genuine offer, I can do stuff (waves hand airily). Labour are irrelevant and useless, I shrug my shoulders at them.
