Kathleen Stock deactivated her Twitter account

I just noticed, and others have mentioned, that despite lots of us being vocal with what support we could, that Dr Stock has now taken the decision to remove herself from Twitter. I just saw this from a commentator from lesbian and gay news:-

Just to say for anyone asking, I imagine Professor Stock has deactivated for the sake of her health following a union turning on her and colluding with a homophobic hate campaign against a lesbian.

I have no idea if she ever reads mumsnet but I can only offer whatever support I can and say that I've bought your book, so at least my small contribution will a little bit.

Thanks for letting us know. I'm not surprised, Twitter is not a safe space for many women. I wrote her a supportive email and told her there are very supportive message boards here. I did get a reply. But as her email is publicly available I'm sure she is also inundated there with messages of hate too.

PigeonLittle · 12/10/2021 23:04

Utter bastards.

I also have her book Gin Hope she rests quieter tonight. There are bigger and better battles to fight outside of a Twitter war.

MildredsMussaurus · 12/10/2021 23:06

I don't blame her. This situation really sucks and Twitter can be awful. I also emailed her last week, and have ordered her book.

TheWatersofMarch · 12/10/2021 23:16

I've got her book. It's now being quietly passed round the brighter Y11 girls at my daughter's school. Take heart Kathleen if you read this, you have a lot of support.

Stopsnowing · 12/10/2021 23:20

Am going to buy her book Material Girls.

FemaleAndLearning · 12/10/2021 23:29

I too wanted to send her a message of support but thought her email is probably full of hate. I was near to tears listening to Posie talking about Kathleen this morning. Very moving.
I'm half way through Kathleen's book. Very good reading.
I'm a single mum of daughters and we are proud we have such great women to fight with.
We are here for you Kathleen 🌹

Twitter is a cesspit sometimes. I bought the book when it came out after listening to her being interviewed about it. She is the most balanced, rational and intelligent voice on this or any topic that I have heard in a long time and the book is exhaustively researched, analytical and positively compassionate.

Her recent treatment has been like watching a lioness circled by outnumbering jackals.

Coincidentally, I have just watched Monday's episode of University Challenge, not realising Sussex was on. They were excruciatingly bad.

Enough4me · 13/10/2021 00:07

The messages on Twitter are ridiculous, saying to KS that her union is right by 'protecting' cult trans rights...but what about her rights for freedom of speech to say facts?

Eucalyptustrees · 13/10/2021 00:09

The line has probably finally been over stepped.

Whilst I don't want Kathleen to be going through this, I have seen public support for her from my university that I hadn't seen before.

Tomorrow I am going to add a couple of lines to my email signature.

"I support academic freedom and I support Professor Kathleen Stock"

Eucalyptustrees · 13/10/2021 00:10

I work in HR by the way.

Enough4me · 13/10/2021 00:10

@NewlyGranny yes it seems the students are too busy harassing an innocent woman who speaks factually, to learn facts.

She could teach them, if only they could open their minds to learn.

AlexaShutUp · 13/10/2021 00:13

I have just bought her book.

FeckTheMagicDragon · 13/10/2021 00:18

Is there any point sending flowers or a card to her address at the University? If only to signal how many women support her?

Eucalyptustrees · 13/10/2021 00:21

Send them to the philosophy department.

aweegc · 13/10/2021 00:24

I also bought her book today - on pre-order where I am.

Am utterly disgusted with how she's been treated, not just recently, but for years.

I hope she has some lovely family and friends around her right now.

NewlyGranny · 13/10/2021 00:26

Enough4Me, yes, they literally scored 10 points, total, to Birmingham's 245. They knew a little about children's films...

So this is where they are going with it. Hauling out all the old lies and stringing then together.

Sad.

Sorry this link.

Helleofabore · 13/10/2021 05:15

She has a habit of deactivating her twitter account on and off. I do hope that she will be back.

DialsMavis · 13/10/2021 06:44

I have also bought Material Girls and am really enjoying it. My very eloquent Hmm Sussex fresher son says 'they' "are wankers"

DoesHePlayTheFiddle · 13/10/2021 06:45

Buy her book - support, income, raising awareness.
Report this hate-crime to the police.
The union though - horrific. If you're a member - leave!

Articus · 13/10/2021 08:27

Awful UCU. A women’s union to fight for women’s rights from pay to spaces, representation etc would be soo good!

FrancescaContini · 13/10/2021 08:30

I’m going to buy it today. I just can’t believe what’s happening for her 😢

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 13/10/2021 08:31

I was thinking the same!

I don't agree with the white feathers handed out during the ww1, but I do think the white feather should be sent to unions, publisher and other organisations that behaviour in the manner that the Kathleen's union has done.

I love a whole dumper truck of white feathers dumped at their door.
