Iknowitisheresomewhere · 08/10/2021 20:44

OP posts:
Iknowitisheresomewhere · 08/10/2021 20:46

brilliant - Dr Matthew Goodwin spot on, and Ken Clark and Caroline Flint great. I was cheering and was going to come on and post this

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 08/10/2021 20:49

Who was Jess?

MaMaLa321 · 08/10/2021 20:50

chair of young labour. and all round nit wit

AssassinatedBeauty · 08/10/2021 20:52

Jess Barnard is the Young Labour member who was being investigated by Labour for referring to T*RFs on Twitter, but recently had the investigation dropped. Labour claimed that it was a mistake to initiate an investigation into her.

PronounssheRa · 08/10/2021 20:55

@MaMaLa321

chair of young labour. and all round nit wit
Was she arguing that Prof stock should be sacked?
nauticant · 08/10/2021 20:58

That was a fantastic part of the programme, everyone should give it a listen. The answers started with Matthew Goodwin being reasonable in terms of the importance of free speech in unversities, it moved onto Jess Barnard who in about a minute came up with a handful of slanderous statements, then when Matthew Goodwin was able to respond he went very strongly in at the totalitarian tendencies he was seeing. Including Jess Barnard saying that she thinks Stock should be sacked but a minute later denying it.

Unusually, the host, Chris Mason, allowed the topic to run as it became increasingly ill-tempered.

Listen from 32:30. It's a surprisingly long segment and worth following how it develops.

I think the BBC is finding its backbone over this one.

PronounssheRa · 08/10/2021 21:05

Jess Barnard saying that she thinks Stock should be sacked but a minute later denying it.

I thought she would, chair of young Labour wanting a women sacked.

lanadelgrey · 08/10/2021 21:12

Ooh I’d be tempted to phone up were I around tomorrow. Jess trots out the usual but won’t allow her ‘facts’ to be interrogated

nauticant · 08/10/2021 21:15

Earlier in the programme Jess Barnard said that the 1970s were better for women's rights and their safety than the current day. She's a great one for having opinions on things she's wholly ignorant about.

RoyalCorgi · 08/10/2021 21:18

For anyone playing Trans bingo, Jess got the suicide risk in early.

AssassinatedBeauty · 08/10/2021 21:19

@nauticant

Earlier in the programme Jess Barnard said that the 1970s were better for women's rights and their safety than the current day. She's a great one for having opinions on things she's wholly ignorant about.
That is exceptionally ignorant for someone who presumably thinks of themselves as a feminist and as someone who thinks they are capable of representing other women, politically.
OldCrone · 08/10/2021 21:23

This is what Jess Barnard said when she was allowed to comment again at the end of the discussion:

"If anyone came into our spaces and was debating our rights, the right for us to exist and for spaces in which we feel safe, then I think that we would be pushing back in the same way that trans people and their allies are today. I think we would all feel very angry if people were trying to take away our rights."

She doesn't seem to realise that this is exactly what is already happening to women.

"And I think you can argue that you also support trans rights but you want to accept the debate, well actually you have to understand that people within the group that are arguing for this debate vehemently oppose transwomen, they believe some really foul things they talk about very foul things..."

Who is she talking about here? It's not Kathleen Stock, it's not us. Who are these people who are saying 'very foul things' about trans people? I'm sure there are people who do this, but they're not the people who want a debate.

Earlier on she was accusing women who don't want to lose their rights as living in an echo chamber. She should really get out of hers and start to listen to the other side.

RightsHoardingRaptor · 08/10/2021 21:25

@OldCrone I was just about to write the same thing. It is exactly what is happening to women.

RightsHoardingRaptor · 08/10/2021 21:26

Love the critical thinking section at the end. Exactly this. Higher education is for this. Truth seeking. TRA are not dealing in truth so this is terrifying them.

MistandMud · 08/10/2021 21:26

Who are these people who are saying 'very foul things' about trans people?

Men, largely. But that never seems to bother people as much as a lack of enthusiasm from a woman.

RoyalCorgi · 08/10/2021 21:29

Jess not only got suicide in early, she got it in often.

Why are these people never challenged on these lies? Imagine any other group that came on and endlessly repeated that they were at bigger risk of suicide than anyone else. Imagine, say, every time someone came on to talk about disability they said "Disabled people commit suicide more often than anyone else." Imagine the impact of that on people who are disabled. It's just vile. And nobody ever ever challenges it.

Also, she then went on to make false claims about how hard Twitter was for trans people because people were mean to them. Stupid woman.

nauticant · 08/10/2021 21:36

It was extremely annoying AssassinatedBeauty. She wanted to make the point that things are bad now but rather than go to the trouble of formulating and presenting a cogent argument, she just plucked something out of her arse that made her point but was made up and untrue.

AssassinatedBeauty · 08/10/2021 21:40

I should find time to listen to the programme, but did any of the other guests respond in any way to her claim? I don't think I could have restrained myself from scoffing at her if it'd been me.
