I think the tide may be turning

I was surprised by this video, not just by the hysteria on display, but heartened by the comments. People are starting to question, to push back. In esence, they are not playing the game anymore.

Back to the video compilation, i was struck in the first example that when the employee at Sonic was asked what he was, he said male. He then asked “what are you” and the answer from the transwoman was “what do you think?”

Not, I’m a woman. Not I’m a transwoman and prefer to be addressed as ma’am. No, it was what do I look like?

Like posters who go on sites and ask “how old do I look?”

All about seeking affirmation. Nothing to do with merely wanting to be addressed by preference. They could have said I prefer to be called ma’am and many people—certainly in service professions—would respect that as a courtesy.

Then I went onto Twitter and found this, by accident, from the transwoman in the first clip:

“All I want” ( ha ha ha, because it’s about your wants) is for Sonic (a drive-in burger chain with servers on skates, very retro) to “train every single employee on how to properly affirm us.”

Not train them how to address customers, but how to affirm customers.

Again, when asked what this person was (a clunky way to ask—‘how would you like to be addressed’ would have been better), the answer was a question.

I think the tide may be turning

The transwoman who posted that Sonic clip is getting no support on Twitter.

The Times today has JK Rowling on the front page of the Culture section and the top of the mast head of the main paper. The comments are overwhelmingly supportive apart from a couple quibbling about whether she's any good as a writer.

The Guardian couldn't publish this.

I found this very encouraging. More people have picked up on the fact that a black low wage employee is being bullied. I am so glad people are outraged by this because it really sticks in my throat when people expect us to applaud them for picking on people who are less privileged than them on several counts.

@KimikosNightmare my point to the op is share a different link , there are lots. My point is some peoples good opinion isn’t worth it. I’m no fan of cancel culture and if you’d ever engaged with me before on these boards you’d see I’m clearly gc. Your hitler point is the opposite to what you think it is - if hitler said the sonic trans woman was disgusting would you be shouting it from the rooftops and andy telling me to take my cancel culture elsewhere? If Peter tatchell suddenly said prisons should be single sex would all his pedophilic tendencies suddenly be ok? I’ve never seen quite such right wing commentators shared on this topic here, I read them quite a bit and they are full of informed people with inspirational views and insights into how to be a better feminist. It’s not necessary.

Why are people derailing by talking about the channel on which this video was posted? The video came directly from the Tik Tok of Eden Torres and Eden has been doubling down about it on Twitter, so it hasn't been misrepresented on that channel. And Eden is getting a roasting on Twitter as well.

And we have all seen the 'It's Ma'am!' video before anyway haven't we?
