Absolute disgrace. Posters on campus calling for her to be sacked. Academic colleague tweeting that he agrees with this. twitter.com/FrancescoFv37/status/1445727937660076032?t=-Di7mRf5sznFvvzww8UI2w&s=19 I saw a tweet saying there was a burning in effigy. Can't confirm this but nothing would surprise me now. Time for Sussex staff, students and alumni to put their heads over the parapet.

@GCmiddle

Kathleen Stock is feeling the worst of it and has for some time, but the intimidation of gender critical academics is happening in many universities, in this country and elsewhere.

It's rife - //www.gcacademicnetwork.org.uk

This seems to be the beginning of the tide turning, thankfully.

What on earth is the “ Centre for the Study of Sexual Dissidence”

Part of Sussex University. As well as art history, francesco ventrella seems to teach there.

What on earth happened to choosing degrees that lead to employment? Or are there now sufficient D&I jobs that a qualification from the Centre for the Study of Sexual Dissidence is a golden passport.

A plopper is someone who will come onto a thread, not to actually engage with the discussion but to post some mantra or nonsense word salad (normally along the lines of 'you transphobic bitches!!!') and will then leave, satisfied that they've told us all off.

It's normally posters who are used to Twitter, where you can block or 'only mentioned' people who disagree with you or if push comes to shove, delete a tweet entirely if the ratio is too bad. They can't quite get their head around this platform where you can't edit or block people from responding to your comments, you have to stand by what you've said. It's why the whole 'Mumsnet is an echo chamber' trope is such nonsense.

Sorry if it’s already been posted but have you seen the university’s Women’s Officer has gone against Prof Stock?

Here you go.

I wonder what Daily Mail comment writers would make of it. Masters level research into queer studies. A bit like the Twitter comment on Justin Trudeau’s reference to 2SLGBTQIA++ people. “Head butting keyboard is now a sexuality”

I am getting too old for all of this.

Much sympathy for Prof Stock. Sussex sounds like a malevolent kindergarten.

I don't know how Professor Stock deals with it all Sad

Disgusting bullies.

I've taken screenshots of the instagram account should instagram do the right thing and delete it (I strongly suspect they won't).

The Women's Officer is a disgrace. Shame on you Lucy.

I'm hoping this will continue to get media coverage - and that docstock gets the opportunity to speak for herself.
Some of the stuff on Twitter is libellous.

I don't think it's neutral at all, they completely glossed over the abuse she's had, with no details given.

Not at all neutral. They sneak a lot of high value word in to make her seem unreasonable

Stock has previously said she is “at odds” with a large section of academics.

She said the words at odds, but they added the large section Skim read that, like most people do, and she seems to have acknowledged she is in a minority.

Got a mention on Today on R4 this morning.
They said that this stems from her saying that transwomen are still men. I’m guessing a lot of R4 listeners would be thinking ‘well yes’.

I agree. Note also the placing of "academic freedoms" in scare quotes in the headline.

I’m delighted that SU have made their position so crystal clear - no dithering, no trying to appease both sides, simply that they will not stand for the campaign of abuse against Kathleen and academic freedom.

I haven't read Material Girls (will put on my library order list), but as Prof Stock is an academic, I assume it's a "proper" book ie fully referenced? So if you disagree with her, you are free to write your own scholarly response, backing up your argument with reputable sources? Or is that a pathetically boring and outdated view of academia, and if you don't like the sound of it you should just rant on Twitter?
