Absolute disgrace. Posters on campus calling for her to be sacked. Academic colleague tweeting that he agrees with this. twitter.com/FrancescoFv37/status/1445727937660076032?t=-Di7mRf5sznFvvzww8UI2w&s=19 I saw a tweet saying there was a burning in effigy. Can't confirm this but nothing would surprise me now. Time for Sussex staff, students and alumni to put their heads over the parapet.

@ScreamingMeMe

I don't know how Professor Stock deals with it all Sad

Disgusting bullies.

I've taken screenshots of the instagram account should instagram do the right thing and delete it (I strongly suspect they won't).

The Women's Officer is a disgrace. Shame on you Lucy.

Email her.

[email protected]

If all the lovely women on here, and lovely men too, do that imagine how bright her day will be. Imagine how for her every day is harassment and bulling. Knowing she has support is something kind we can do. I did this myself with my real me and she wrote me back a lovely thank you. So mumsneters get writing ...

On another note the Daily Mail(sorry) had a very good article this week by Julie Bindel asking why young feminists are anti older feminists. She had some very good points about how prostitution has become 'sex work', how it's OK to be in porn if it's 'a choice' females make and how 'being kind' is all that matters even if females are being kind to people who don't deserve it. (Unless of course young feminists decide that older feminists don't deserve any kindness at all, when it's OK). Clearly I agreed with the article.

SapphosRock · 08/10/2021 09:34

God I've only just heard about this. Poor Kathleen Stock. The TRAs in Brighton are just vile.

I'm amazed that that they think bullying, intimidation and harassment of women is a good look.

EdgeOfTheSky · 08/10/2021 09:42

Material Girls ordered.
(From a proper bookshop)

LoislovesStewie · 08/10/2021 09:46

I've also e-mailed to say I support her.

ncsussex · 08/10/2021 10:26

You could also email Kevin Hylton: [email protected]

He is the university's new Pro-vice chancellor for Culture, Diversity and Inclusion www.sussex.ac.uk/broadcast/read/55698

ncsussex · 08/10/2021 11:17

Actually, there is a new, new PVC for Culture, Diversity and Inclusion (started this week, Kevin was there as an interim). He is David Ruebain ([email protected]) and has just emailed all staff as follows:
"As you may know, I have a background as a disability activist, equality lawyer and in higher education ...
"Culture, equality and inclusion is of course about ensuring the right policies, processes and systems are in place, but to ensure progress it also requires continuous evaluation and refreshing. My role presents an opportunity for enhancing this strategic work. As a lawyer, I saw the value of strong legislation but ultimately, it acts as a floor - a starting point - not a ceiling in driving equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and I believe that we can collectively go much further.
"For example, in recent times, much work has been done to understand experiences of intersectionality (I was involved in establishing the first national organisation of disabled LGBTQ people) and resolving conflicts between those with different identities. Similarly, I am very excited about work on the value of relationships and allyship and I am keen to explore how that might translate at Sussex. Ultimately, as an institution of learning, EDI will support us in succeeding in teaching, learning and research and fundamentally in nourishing and nurturing our community.
"From speaking to people and seeing the work that is already being done, it is clear to me that there is a deep commitment at Sussex in valuing and advancing EDI. Central to this is having - and advancing - good community relations. I’m particularly keen that we have regular engagement on the issues around culture, equality and inclusion that really matter to us, including those that are contested, and that we find space to respectfully share our differences of opinion and to enhance our University as a progressive community of ideas and of rigorous discussion and debate.
...
"Over the next few weeks and months, I’m keen to talk with you about all aspects of culture and EDI and the principles that will underpin our work to advance it. This will include the importance of ensuring safety and freedom of speech within the law; which is not only legally required but also an inherent and necessary part of university life and of progressing EDI. I know from my early introductions here, that many of you care about this too."

Motorina · 08/10/2021 11:20

I have just bought it, too. I figure royalties and a morale boost from a bump in sales are a good way to show support.

RedRosa17 · 08/10/2021 11:32

Solidarity and sisterhood to Prof Kathleen Stock. This attack on her is part of a concerted attack on women and must be actively resisted.

Imnobody4 · 08/10/2021 11:39

Kemi has just tweeted. I do admire that woman

SapphosRock · 08/10/2021 11:52

@socialworker222 I have reported your post, not for the sentiment but because TRAs also read Mumsnet and could send her hate mail.

SpindleWhirl · 08/10/2021 11:54

Interesting that Sussex University has put a lawyer in charge of EDI and he said this ^^ (after a bit of flannel).

Jaysmith71 · 08/10/2021 11:56

It's not difficult, Sussex:

University = Academic Freedom and Collegiality.

Now start typing up that Sits Vac ad for the THES: WANTED. Lecturer In Art History (and nothing else.)

SpindleWhirl · 08/10/2021 11:59

It'll be on the university website probably.

ChattyLion · 08/10/2021 12:41

I think sending a message of support is a lovely thing to do.
Also if she’s reading this thread Flowers to you Professor Stock. It shouldn’t be this way. Hopefully the tide is turning but thank you for keeping going.

LizzieSiddal · 08/10/2021 12:54

Glad to see Kemi, a goverment minister has spoken out.

I wonder if anyone from Labour will be adding their voices to support academic freedoms and against misogynistic threats?

Jaysmith71 · 08/10/2021 12:58

Among Labour Sussex Grads, Peter Kyle and Ben Bradshaw are sensible, Lloyd Russell-Moyle is not, unclaer about Hillary Benn and Lord Peter Hain.

alreadytaken · 08/10/2021 13:32

I'm not impressed by David Ruebain's email.Where is his clear statement that intimidation and threats are illegal and have no place in an inclusive university?

Bouledeneige · 08/10/2021 14:09

I have sent her a message of support via her email. The Twitter link to the university statement is very depressing reading - seeing all the comments from the trans constituency saying that she is a hate speaker and wants them to die. It really is beyond belief - most will never have read a word of what she has actually written. Such narcissism.

prudencepuffin · 08/10/2021 14:18

I`ve also sent a friendly email. The standard of debating at universities seems to have fallen through the floor, not to mention the standards of acceptable behaviour. Must be very hard for academics who dare to show an independant point of view. Good for the Vice Chancellor though.

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 08/10/2021 14:33

Glad that the VC spoke up for her on the Today prog and that Justin Webb made the rather pointed comment about the failure of the local MP, Caroline Lucas, to defend her.

I also see a certain CEO of an "anti-bullying" charity was all over Twitter calling Stock and other women names, tagging the university into outrageous lies about her and generally gloating about "baiting" women. Is there no requirement under Charitable status for execs not to directly undermine the purpose of the organisation?

LiteralViolins · 08/10/2021 14:51

I've emailed her too.

I'm utterly sick of this shit so I can only begin to imagine how she must be feeling.

Solidarity, Kathleen Flowers

IGotHam · 08/10/2021 15:06

I am buying a copy of Dr Stocks' book and I hope she is doing ok in the face of all of this.

MargaritaPie · 08/10/2021 15:34

Saw this on social media. Someone reported students to the police for expressing concern regarding Prof Kathleen Stock.

tl dr- the police say the students have not committed any crimes.
