Absolute disgrace. Posters on campus calling for her to be sacked. Academic colleague tweeting that he agrees with this. twitter.com/FrancescoFv37/status/1445727937660076032?t=-Di7mRf5sznFvvzww8UI2w&s=19 I saw a tweet saying there was a burning in effigy. Can't confirm this but nothing would surprise me now. Time for Sussex staff, students and alumni to put their heads over the parapet.

@DoesHePlayTheFiddle

Reading about what is going on at Sussex - it seems like terrorism to me. It's an intimidation far worse than 'bullying'. It intends to destroy the woman named but also to terrify others into not thinking or speaking as she does. It is exactly the opposite of what a university should be.

Not only should right-thinking people choose not to go there, but any organisation funding the university should withdraw.

Are laws not being broken? This can't be right. There should be prosecutions, not just exclusions.

You are absolutely correct.

I am a children's counsellor and James Esses has been made an example of to keep the rest of us in our place. And it's working. Counselling training takes ages and is really expensive. Once you've got effective relationships with clients you don't want to do anything that will risk severing them.

My mouth is firmly closed.

Maybe he’s confused the meaning of feminist with misogynist.

It seems to be a common error.

The individual has locked down his twitter account. Sensible chap seeing as his employer has said ctaegorically ythat they won't put up with anyone trying to intimidate or silence a member of staff and/or academic freedoms.

Too late though!

LoislovesStewie · 07/10/2021 16:33

I went to University to broaden my mind; it seems these days people want to do the opposite. Disgraceful behaviour by people who ought to have more sense.

Yepnothatfeeling · 07/10/2021 16:42

That's a good statement from Sussex Uni - do these protestors live in such an echo chamber that they start to believe their own hype?

PronounssheRa · 07/10/2021 17:03

They sure as hell know what a woman is when they need a witch to burn

ArabellaScott · 07/10/2021 17:26

@ncsussex

Email from VC just been sent to all Sussex Uni staff:

"Everyone at the University has the right, in law and under the University’s Dignity and Respect policy, to be free from harassment and intimidation.

Yesterday, there was a protest on campus which, from the initial evidence, appears to have been designed to attack Professor Kathleen Stock for exercising her academic freedoms, and to pressurise the University to terminate her employment. Although the overwhelming number of messages I have received about the incident have supported Kathleen, I have been disturbed to receive amongst them a message calling for Kathleen to be sacked.

An investigation into the incident and its aftermath is underway and, in order not to prejudice any subsequent action, I don’t want to comment too much at this stage. However, the University cannot and will not tolerate threats to cherished academic freedoms and will take any action necessary to protect the rights of our staff."

'a' message. A single message. This could all be down to one daftie.
FireFlyBoogaloo · 07/10/2021 17:30

The best thing about TRAs is their complete inability to read a room.

KaycePollard · 07/10/2021 17:35

Can I suggest all Sussex Alums write to the university, saying they will not recommend it, will not donate, will not do any of the things universities like their alumni to do, while this violence against a female member of staff is allowed to continue.

Remember that women make up only 12% of the UK's total professoriate (ie all those who are appointed as full professors - top of the ladder, if you like ...). It's a shameful statistic.

merrymouse · 07/10/2021 17:39

it’s not been right for colleagues working in the same School to be afraid to talk about Stock for fear of litigation.

I don’t understand this - she can only threaten litigation if they say or do something that would make litigation possible.

Jaysmith71 · 07/10/2021 17:40

There are times when I feel really chuffed I went to Scumbag Polytechnic with the peeling paint and Formica tables.

Oblomov21 · 07/10/2021 17:59

Oh dear.

feellikeanalien · 07/10/2021 18:09

#ShameOnSussexUni is trending on Twitter.

MargaritaPie · 07/10/2021 18:18

Looks like some students are upset. Surely there must be a reason?

Eucalyptustrees · 07/10/2021 18:36

There is MargaritaPie. A failure to provide constant affirmation of gender can lead to angry meltdowns.

Have you not been reading?

RedDogsBeg · 07/10/2021 18:56

Right on cue here comes MargaritaPie to victim blame and excuse the violence, harassment and threats against a woman on the grounds thse doing it might be upset.

In MargaritaPie's world any woman who expresses and opinion contrary to the gender ideologist Taliban is asking for it.

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 07/10/2021 19:03

Well, they aren't having their every whim pandered to, or only hearing things they like to hear, or anyone telling them how brave they all are. They're being told off. Because this is not just reasoned argument and disagreement with her, they have gone too far.

And much like my 3 year old, they don't like being told off. So like my 3 year old, they have a tantrum and get very upset. Some of this upset is thinking mummy and daddy don't love her anymore. Much like "we feel unsafe"

So we explain that we do love her, but whatever warranted the telling off was not on. She says sorry, we all hug and carry on. Not sure why the students can't get to that stage and continue to cry and rant, but hey ho.

littlbrowndog · 07/10/2021 19:03

I never seen margarita ever support any women 🤷‍♀️

foxgoosefinch · 07/10/2021 19:08

The tweets from that other academic are shameful and if I were Kathleen Stock I’d be initiating a formal Dignity at Work process in short order. Where would any other employee feel they could openly call on a public forum in libellous terms for a colleague to be sacked…?

yourhairiswinterfire · 07/10/2021 19:10

Sussex Police say they're investigating.

The tweets from that other academic are shameful

Apart from anything else they are just plain wrong.

Kathleen Stock has NEVER debated the validity of trans lives.

She has debated the validity of gender categories imposed on policy and legislation.

I might as well say that people who think sex is a spectrum are debating the validity of my life because I disagree. I think they are wrong. I don’t believe they think I don’t exist.

More than anything it makes me wonder about the quality of the teaching at the university if he can’t understand the difference.

ArtemesiaK · 07/10/2021 19:31

I always love to read the comments on articles such as The Times one. Nobody agrees with the TRAs.........

lostandfoundedges · 07/10/2021 19:33

I see the Instagram account is still active. I’ve reported it too.
