Liz Truss in The Times

Truss, one of the government’s most enthusiastic culture warriors, is blunter still when asked about Sir Keir Starmer’s statement that it was “wrong” for a Labour MP to say that only women have cervixes. “There’s a real problem when politicians feel afraid to say something for fear of speaking out of turn or giving offence when the vast majority of people in Britain understand that women have cervixes. I think they’d be pretty surprised to hear that the leader of the opposition was confused about that.”

Truss thinks the debate about trans rights confuses gender and biological sex: “There’s a very important difference between sex and gender and the Equality Act is very clear that single-sex spaces should be provided for and organisations should be able to distinguish on the basis of biological sex.”

Humour me with a brief digression - I don't know how accurate it was, but there was a BBC drama about the Brexit campaign, and there was a moment in which the head of the Remain campaign was in a focus group and far too late had an "oh shit" moment where he suddenly realised they'd completely misjudged how the voters felt.

When I read that paragraph, I feel myself thinking "hmmm, maybe it wouldn't be so very bad to vote Conservative". If people like me are thinking that, then the Labour Party really need an "oh shit" moment.

Anyway, this wasn't about Labour, it was about Liz Truss, and I'm so glad that despite her promotion, she's still there saying what she's saying, and getting more and more confident in expressing her views on sex and gender.

Imnobody4 · 03/10/2021 11:36

Helen @ minnymum isn't happy.
Following Liz Truss’ statement in The Sunday Times, and her installing an @EHRCChair sympathetic to ‘gender critical’ ideology, transphobes are pushing for trans-hostile guidance to be issued by the @EHRC 😣

It's pretty terrible that our minister for equalities doesn't understand that there's no legal difference between sex and gender, and that the EA explicitly says that trans people should be treated as our "acquired gender" the vast majority of the time My bold!

So... erm, ignoring the sex = gender in law twaddle, what is different there from what Liz Truss said? Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't - and it is perfectly legal to refuse a transwoman access to female single sex anythings.

CatherinaJTV · 03/10/2021 12:48

and here I thought you might talk about her £183 million worth of cuts to women and equalities aid...

Well we would, when we see it laid out fully, as part of a government overhaul of all spending, post Brexit, Covid etc. But maybe not on this thread...

maybe not anywhere here, at least I don't see much of it. One of my arguments against cosying up to seemingly GC politicians is that this'll be the only thing you get. "Oh yes, we'll kick the GRA reform down the road again (while we cut the women's aid budget by 60% and impose cuts that affect women disproportiately)."

Who is 'cosying'?

Many of us are decrying our political homelessness. You're making false assumptions!

Personally I am waiting to see the FT etc publish a precis of cuts and changed spending levels, to see if there is any obvious stupidity. That cuts are needed across many areas is bleeding obvious!!!

I just don't log in, use an incongito web page.
MistandMud · 03/10/2021 13:06

Your message seems to be that it’s worth forcing women to profess belief in falsehoods because that might buy them more help.

Thanks a bloody bunch.

MistandMud · 03/10/2021 13:06

I don't think they realise that the general public know now.

They know that understanding only women have a cervix is what minnymum is calling 'a gender critical ideology'. They know that minnymum's 'transphobe' is a name for women who doesn't want to be called a bodies with vaginas.

They know.

The cat is out, the bag is empty.

Mathematics Question -

Jenny is voting for a political party. If the number of people who qualify as 'women' increases by 100% how should Jenny vote to support women? Show your working and use the graph paper provided.

Ohai there. What is the current state of the Three Strikes and You're Out policy, does anyone know?

You might think this a tad oblique to the thread, but then again, maybe not...

Thankyouverymuch.

teawamutu · 03/10/2021 14:20

I was reading (via incognito mode as obvs am blocked) the responses to mimmybirthingperson.

They really, honestly seem to believe there's no legal distinction between sex and gender. How?

And the two TW saying this will harm them, as allegedly post-op people who've been using female facilities for years: do they not grasp that there's actually no legal distinction between them and Danielle Muscato?

I would have felt sympathy, once upon a time. Right now I'm musing on whether it ever occurred to them that they'd never asked women for permission; and whether they ever thought to speak up against the excesses of the TRAs or were happy enough to accept the gains until it all started looking sketchy.

Depends on whether you are actually told a deletion is a strike. You get a warning, a week on the naughty step to think about your actions, and then maybe a ban!

Strikes are counted in a rolling 6 weeks.

I think the three strikes only applies one way.

Have we ever seen it used the other way?
