Is the tide turning? Women's rights in the news

So this week Sarah Everard's 's police-officer murderer is sentenced to full life, the police come under the spotlight for institutionalised misogyny, joky 'rapist' nicknames, femicides by policemen and there are calls for no more male-only arrests & transportation of female prisoners.

A report states the obvious - that allowing trans women into women's sports is unfair and unsafe, but so many had felt too frightened for their jobs and their safety to speak out.

Labour politicians' ludicrous statements about what a woman is attract mass ridicule during the Brighton conference.

Is there hope?

🤞

That should read "attitudes towards..."

A lot of posters on this board do worry that the overreach of the TRAs will trigger a massive backlash and that innocent people will be affected. The TRAs are setting gay and lesbian attitudes back a generation.

Agreed that we are in the facilitating set-up for a Thermidorean reaction* and we're in danger of having LGB rights curtailed or even rescinded as part of a general shift towards authoritarianism;

For historians of revolutionary movements, the term Thermidor has come to mean the phase in some revolutions when power slips from the hands of the original revolutionary leadership and a radical regime is replaced by a more conservative regime, sometimes to the point where the political pendulum may swing back towards something resembling a pre-revolutionary state.

We will get more sunlight during the Tory conference. We have come a long way since David TC Davis MP was the only parliamentarian to be openly GC. Stonewall are losing their grip on Conservative policy, and will be mounting a major rear guard action, with a good chance they will overplay their hand again.

Hopefully the contrast between the Labour party cervix script, and the more open mix of views within the Conservatives will be clear. We may agree with Liz, Kemi and the Baroness, but open debate would not be a bad thing.

I should think that I agree with them on comparatively few issues: the ones where we concur are important to me as are some of the ones where we probably disagree.

Given what's happening to the LGBA, I should think the Conservatives will be as willing to have stacked debates and other deplatforming practices as the other parties. I will be interested if I'm wrong.

@CBUK2K2 You're quite pleased to see a woman repeatedly raped in a psychiatric unit because women deserve it?
Good for you. At least now you got what you wanted!

Calling womens response to male violence 'misandry' is a classic example of DARVO.

oldwomanwhoruns · 02/10/2021 11:42

I do think that the tide is turning!
NOW is the time to speak up, FB, Twitter, real life. ALL of us. NOW.

Thelnebriati · 02/10/2021 12:59

Silly me thought the tide was turning when the Met attitude towards rape victims changed and they introduced specialist rape suites.
That was decades ago.

Apparently, according to some people, we were actually supposed to be on red alert the whole time to stop the backslide, somehow.

Apparently, according to some people, we were actually supposed to be on red alert the whole time to stop the backslide, somehow.

Yet somehow, this exhausting hypervigilance isn't to affect our response to men who catcall or 'accidentally' brush against us and shouldn't sap our emotional and cognitive resources.
