Labour's Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland, chosen for this onerous role because he is the Tigger of Scottish Labour MPs; the wonderful thing about Ian is he's the only one.

Here are Ian's views on gynaecology, as told to Emma Barnett:

(IM) "I mean, (chuckle) ....it's a ...it's a medical science thesis, isn't it. It's probably not correct on the basis that you would maybe have some, er, men who've transitioned to be women but don't have a cervix. You might have some transtioning men that do have a, ...a, ...a cervix. you might have some women who've transtioned to men who don't. So ...ha, ...this sort of technical argument gets away from the...."

(EB) "....Sorry, what was your ...I didn't follow your answer. ...Was Kier Starmer right to say that?"

(IM) "I don't think Rosie Duffiled should have thought she couldn't have come to conference. And she's ...Conference is a perfectly safe place, and I think that highlights the problem with this argument..."

(EB) "...Sorry, could you answer ...do you mind ....would you mind answering the question? I didn't ask you if Rosie should come or not. ...She ...she feels she can't, right. ....That's. ....It's ...it's how it is. That's what's going on with Rosie. But you are a member of the shadow cabinet. You're the shadow Secretary of State for Scotland. Was Kier Starmer right in what he said yeterday?"

(IM) "...Well, ...I suppose, ha, ....you see, this is, ...this is where I think this whole debate gets bogged down in issues that are missing the point of the debate. ...Um ....In terms of the actual question that you're saying, in terms of the cervix question, of course biological women are born with a cervix, but sometimes you get (inaudible) ...transition, you will have people that are legally living as women that don't. So it's a technical question that I think that, ...um, ...takes away from the major debating points here, and this is the problem with this debate. ...Um. ...We've got two very polarised parts of this debate that need to come together. These issues are not resolvable. ....(Etc, etc, etc.)

(JS) ...Sorry. I can't carry on. I've lost the will to live.

I wish Michael Spicer would do one of those advisor-in-the-next-room videos to one of these interviews but he’d probably get crucified on Twitter.

AnneLovesGilbert · 27/09/2021 14:43

The major debating point is whether or not a woman is an adult human female.

I do wish broadcasters would insist this is a women’s rights issue not a trans right issue.

And I’m staggered that the Labour Party people being sent out for interviews haven’t been given and rehearsed the party line. They’re all falling apart live on air/tv and looking completely incompetent and stupid.

Gncq · 27/09/2021 14:45

Will these fucking imbeciles grow a backbone?

To paraphrase Savid Javid or is it Javid Savid I don't know because he's Tory and I really don't give them much time....

You're in total denial of science, and you want to help run the NHS?

Jaysmith71 · 27/09/2021 14:46

They’re all falling apart live on air/tv and looking completely incompetent and stupid.

Two explanations for that:

  1. The Occam: They are completley incompetent and stupid.

but I don't think so.

  1. Like Reeves, he seems terrified of saying anything that will get him into trouble with the Inquistion.

@StillWeRise

imagine Malcom Tucker....
I do. I do.
NecessaryScene · 27/09/2021 14:51

I've seen it suggested about the Lib Dem leader that he can't answer the question sensibly or he'd be subject to expulsion from the party for "transphobia" under their "code of conduct".

It may be that that's what they're afraid of in the Labour party - although I gather that the Labour TRAs are unhappy that they haven't got a solid enough definition of "transphobia" in the party, suggesting it's a bit woolly.

Maybe they're scared of retroactive discplinary measures when that comes into force...

RoyalCorgi · 27/09/2021 14:52

Like Reeves, he seems terrified of saying anything that will get him into trouble with the Inquistion.

I think that's true. However, any competent party would have media advisers who could have devised a simple formula for answering the question. Starmer, Reeves and Murray (and probably others) have all now ballsed it up.

He just needs to say something like "trans men also have a cervix". That would be entirely accurate and wouldn't offend anyone. It wouldn't even offend me.

ArabellaScott · 27/09/2021 14:52

They are probably scared of the wrong side of history.

History being, of course, shaped like a giant pair of sweaty bollocks.

Lowhum · 27/09/2021 14:53

I just think that some men have no idea what a cervix is and are utterly baffled about why this is hot topic at the moment.

Jaysmith71 · 27/09/2021 14:54

"You might have some transtioning men that do have ...a cervix."

This is the craziest part, and it could mean one of two things:

  1. IM thinks males can acquire a cervix if they transition.

  2. IM thinks women who transition are men from the moment they elect to seek a GRC.

Gncq it’s SaJid Javid.

HirplesWithHaggis · 27/09/2021 14:56

I had a horrible moment there when I saw his name as thread title, I thought maybe he'd done something decent for once and I'd have to grudgingly admire him.

Phew!

OvaHere · 27/09/2021 14:59

They're just all tying themselves in linguistic knots because it's nonsense. They're trying to shoehorn both male and female biology under one heading called 'women'.

They daren't leave male trans people out of the equation for fear of offence and undermining the TWAW mantra even a tiny bit.

But they also don't want to leave female trans people out either because they do have a cervix and of course will need the appropriate health care stemming from that.

It's a great big steaming mess because they daren't be truthful.

ArabellaScott · 27/09/2021 15:01

Current Labour catchism:

*Transwomen are the most marginalised people
*Toxic debate
*We must have respectful debate
*nobody should say only women have cervixes
*women are totally safe, its safe, everything is fine
*let's not discuss technical issues

That it?

CatNamedEaster · 27/09/2021 15:03

Sometimes I wonder if there is a third reason to come out with such incomprehensible crap: to make anyone who doesn't know about the issue just dismiss it as above their heads/irrelevant etc. Which would be quite a clever tactic, as anyone who is too busy worrying about money, food, their kids education and now petrol will just park it as something they probably don't need to give head space to.

Artichokeleaves · 27/09/2021 15:05

It's getting quite funny.

Ask the question, watch the meltdown.

CatNamedEaster · 27/09/2021 15:07

When what it needs is interviewers to start breaking it down. Imagine if she had said "so you are saying that some biological men are born with services?" That's something that sounds so ridiculous for an MP to say that a lot of people's ears would prick up.

CatNamedEaster · 27/09/2021 15:07

Cervixes not servicesBlush

Jaysmith71 · 27/09/2021 15:09

Call Services for Cervixes and we'll service your crevice, Missus.

Threewheeler1 · 27/09/2021 15:12

How do these confused men ever manage to reproduce? I've come to the conclusion that it happens by accident.
Biology really isn't that baffling Ian mate.

CatNamedEaster · 27/09/2021 15:17

I can almost imagine Services for Cervixes being the next logo on NHS screening leaflets.

QueenPeary · 27/09/2021 15:19

Oh Ian 🤦🏻‍♀️

doublemonkey · 27/09/2021 15:21

These fucking simpering lickspittles! How little respect they have for 51% of the population.

We will remember every fucking last one of them.

QueenPeary · 27/09/2021 15:23

He's my MP. If the clear-thinking cervix-havers of Edinburgh South can't peak him no one can.
