Labour's Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland, chosen for this onerous role because he is the Tigger of Scottish Labour MPs; the wonderful thing about Ian is he's the only one.

Here are Ian's views on gynaecology, as told to Emma Barnett:

(IM) "I mean, (chuckle) ....it's a ...it's a medical science thesis, isn't it. It's probably not correct on the basis that you would maybe have some, er, men who've transitioned to be women but don't have a cervix. You might have some transtioning men that do have a, ...a, ...a cervix. you might have some women who've transtioned to men who don't. So ...ha, ...this sort of technical argument gets away from the...."

(EB) "....Sorry, what was your ...I didn't follow your answer. ...Was Kier Starmer right to say that?"

(IM) "I don't think Rosie Duffiled should have thought she couldn't have come to conference. And she's ...Conference is a perfectly safe place, and I think that highlights the problem with this argument..."

(EB) "...Sorry, could you answer ...do you mind ....would you mind answering the question? I didn't ask you if Rosie should come or not. ...She ...she feels she can't, right. ....That's. ....It's ...it's how it is. That's what's going on with Rosie. But you are a member of the shadow cabinet. You're the shadow Secretary of State for Scotland. Was Kier Starmer right in what he said yeterday?"

(IM) "...Well, ...I suppose, ha, ....you see, this is, ...this is where I think this whole debate gets bogged down in issues that are missing the point of the debate. ...Um ....In terms of the actual question that you're saying, in terms of the cervix question, of course biological women are born with a cervix, but sometimes you get (inaudible) ...transition, you will have people that are legally living as women that don't. So it's a technical question that I think that, ...um, ...takes away from the major debating points here, and this is the problem with this debate. ...Um. ...We've got two very polarised parts of this debate that need to come together. These issues are not resolvable. ....(Etc, etc, etc.)

(JS) ...Sorry. I can't carry on. I've lost the will to live.

I wish an interviewer would ask how they are defining marginalisation. Taking away the false suicide stats and the hate incident ("someone misgendered me on twitter) stats, how are they assessing who is marginalised?

catsareme14 · 27/09/2021 15:30

It annoys me too that every time an interviewer raise a question concerning women the person being interviewed immediately starts talking about The Trans debate & ignores the biological women angle .

Antinerak · 27/09/2021 16:17

It would be much easier for them to state "Not everyone who has a cervix is a woman, and not all women have a cervix. Please use the correct and preferred terms when referring to any human e.g. man with a cervix, woman with no cervix, etc,." It's not rocket science.

PronounssheRa · 27/09/2021 16:20

And I’m staggered that the Labour Party people being sent out for interviews haven’t been given and rehearsed the party line

I think they have been prepped, this is the party line, they stumble and waffle because they are being asked to recite a party line that is incoherent nonsense

ArtemesiaK · 27/09/2021 16:39

I heard this. It was as if he hadn't been told this was a question he'd need to answer and hadn't thought about it at all. When these people get stuck for words, they all seem to mutter something about the matter "needing to be debated". Well, OK, we're wanting to debate it, but certain people won't let us. "They're being twansphobic! Shut them up!"

BaronessWrongCrowd · 27/09/2021 16:48

Why aren’t the journalists pressing these cowardly dimwits what they mean by most marginalised. What does exactly do they mean. Where is the evidence?

This is the most pressing question
Artichokeleaves · 27/09/2021 17:06

Really.

Journos, it's not difficult guys. We have all the evidence, it's here on the threads, just ask.

TheWeeDonkey · 27/09/2021 17:08

imagine Malcom Tucker....
Every time

Hmm Right, so according to your ideology "women with no cervix" puts women with a hysterectomy in the same group as men who identify as women who can impregnate women with a cervix using their sperm.

Yeah.

That's logical alright.

OR people could actually be honest and truthful and say... "women including women who identify as men or other genders, have a cervix" trans inclusive and factual. Job done

The "we need a respectful debate" line is always accompanied by some guff about "it's wrong to say only women have cervixes" or "any debate must start with the premise that twaw". It's just astounding. The idea that a debate in which everyone is forced to lie because some people find reality hurtful could have any value. I don't see how that could in any way be described as respectful.

That doesn't make any sense....only women have cervixes, no matter how those women choose to identify or if they go on to have them removed at a later date. Man with a cervix is nonsense..
CreepingDeath · 27/09/2021 17:13

@ARoombaOfOnesOwn

Gncq it’s SaJid Javid.
I thought Sajid was fully TWAW though, so does he suddenly believe in science now? Or is he just digging the boot in?
TheMarzipanDildo · 27/09/2021 17:16

Ian is my MP.

Oh dear. Yes, I think he’d get a bollocking from Malcolm Tucker over that nothingness of an answer.

Tibtom · 27/09/2021 17:22

Does he know what a cervix is?

TheMarzipanDildo · 27/09/2021 17:22

Also I suspect from his answer that he’s not 100% sure which sex has cervix’s...

Tibtom · 27/09/2021 17:24

It might be good to start by asking these MPs what a cervix is, what it's role is, and how to identify which portion of the population that might need one checked.

TheMarzipanDildo · 27/09/2021 17:24

(Or is it cervixes?)

BlackForestCake · 27/09/2021 17:35

Are you confusing Sajid Javid the Conservative Chancellor with the Labour Mayor of London Sadiq Khan?

Cervices.

(And Penes, Vulvae and Vaginae, if you must.)

Yes, I am certain Sadiq Khan is full on TWAW but the other Muslim son of a bus driver hasn't commited to this ideological proclamation, so this may be a case of mistake.
MrsWooster · 27/09/2021 18:15

Sajid Javid is, like all other tories at the moment, capering about the cabinet office rejoicing at the fact that Labour have gifted them the next election.

secular111 · 27/09/2021 18:37

Chris Morris could run with this.

Asking Green, LibDem and Labour politicians 'difficult' questions.

What is a woman?
What is evolution/natural selection?
How do planes stay aloft in the sky?
Why do people breathe?
How many chickens would it take to kill an elephant?

Endless scope for mirth.

PickAChew · 27/09/2021 19:54

From that transcript, he comes across like Miranda talking about sex. That poor guy being made to answer questions related to female body parts 🙄

You literally made me snort my elderflower cordial out of my nose in giggling at your post - thank you so much for giving me a moment’s happiness in a very depressing 48 hours of being a woman 👍😀
