Resource for mom with trans daughters

55 replies

FamilyRoadster · 26/09/2021 21:36

Hi,
Can anyone recommend a good resource, preferably a podcast, for a mom who has recently had a teen daughter come out as trans and another as NB? She’s progressive-ish, but is worried about her trans daughter killing herself (she thinks the suicide rate is 50% when neither parent affirms trans status). I would like to gently introduce her to gc ideas and strategies for dealing with her daughters. Podcasts are best. I doubt she would have a book in the house that questions trans orthodoxy.
TIA!

There are ROGD resources out there, hopefully someone else can be of more help, I think there is a Twitter community?

ACambsWoman · 26/09/2021 21:51

Sasha Ayad and Stella O'Malley do A Wider Lens looking at different trans related topics each week. There maybe something that your friend may listen too.

Crouton19 · 26/09/2021 22:10

Another recommendation here for Gender: A Wider Lens. You can get it on most podcast apps as well. They did an episode recently on the linkage with suicidal ideation.

Transgender Trend debunks the suicide myth, since that will be her most urgent fear.

Mermaids would be helpful.

Anotheruser02 · 26/09/2021 22:18

@anaily

Mermaids would be helpful.
Really no. The woman is already worried about suicide, lets not direct her to the irresponsible organisation that fabricated and spread that 'statistic'.
Shedbuilder · 26/09/2021 22:20

Mermaids really wouldn't be helpful, OP.

From Transgender Trend

There is also disturbing evidence that the transgender charity Mermaids has misrepresented the study to make it appear stronger than it really is. This occurred during a presentation at a conference in front of an audience of lawyers, press, NHS representatives and government officials.²

We contacted the lead academic who conducted the research and asked him these questions. He agreed with the limitations of the study that we pointed out. We then asked whether he was aware that his data had been misrepresented by others and presented without making these limitation clear. He agreed it was unfortunate when “research is used by non-scientists in the context of their own agendas”

Out of all the suggestions, mermaids is the only one that directly works with trans kids, the rest don't work with trans and promote conversion therapy.

@anaily

Mermaids would be helpful.
You think mermaids would be good for gc ideas and strategies
Gncq · 26/09/2021 22:31

Transgender trend also directly work with gender non conforming children. They manage to do so without pedaling harmful false statistics that go against legal guidance.
They also do so without breaching safeguarding.

Helleofabore · 26/09/2021 22:32

And Helen Joyce’s book Trans is on sale for kindle today for 99p.

Alekto · 26/09/2021 22:34

bayswatersupport.org.uk seem well respected.

Mermaids are rather notorious for their lax attitudes to data and safeguarding.

MonsignorMirth · 26/09/2021 22:38

Mermaids (headed up by a self-identified IT consultant) put confidential data - names, discussions of their cases etc - of their child/family clients online where it was publicly viewable. I'd avoid.

anaily · 26/09/2021 22:38

Are there any figures for transgender trend with how many kids they see?

Helleofabore · 26/09/2021 22:39

@anaily

Out of all the suggestions, mermaids is the only one that directly works with trans kids, the rest don't work with trans and promote conversion therapy.
And yet, I have two very good friends with teenaged transboys who have found Mermaids to be very much the opposite to your believe.

So, anaily. Are you recommending this because you are in the situation described and found them useful? Or just repeating again what you read on the Internet without having any critical analysis on what you read.

I also have shown my teenager some of the slides used by Mermaids and they were horrified at the use of such stereotypical trope that they pass off as ‘facts’.

So, please do share what you found to be so convincing in how supportive Mermaids is. What is it that you believe they provide that makes them ideal for supporting teenage females who identify as trans?

anaily · 26/09/2021 22:39

Transgender trend is headed by a self identified sculptor?

MonsignorMirth · 26/09/2021 22:43

anaily is the poster who insisted a woman had to 'be with a man' to have children. Perhaps not the best placed for advice on sex and gender issues.

Helleofabore · 26/09/2021 22:44

@anaily

Please provide evidence for this assertion that any other support service promotes conversion therapy.

And while you are at it, could you please answer some questions asked of you on other threads as to the evidence that affirming only therapy benefits all trans children and teens.

And evidence that proves the latest studies that have been posted for you to read are wrong when they advocate for approaches that deal with underlying commodities as well as gender at the same level of priority.

Helleofabore · 26/09/2021 22:44

@MonsignorMirth

anaily is the poster who insisted a woman had to 'be with a man' to have children. Perhaps not the best placed for advice on sex and gender issues.
And inferred that feminists all hated men.

Absolute bollocks. You should be ashamed of yourself peddling such lies.

@anaily

She's not asking for organisations that work with kids - she's asking for support for the parent.
Helleofabore · 26/09/2021 22:51

Mermaids- the group who told children they could be born in the wrong body.

The reason the Department of Education had to step in and release guidance to stop the further distress of children being told they could ever be born in the ‘wrong body’ and get this dangerous ‘education’ out of schools.

anaily · 26/09/2021 23:05

The aim of the other orgs is to stop kids being trans, that is conversion therapy.

Alekto · 26/09/2021 23:14

Are you on commission anaily? Mermaid's CEO transitioned her own child to appease her homophobic husband who was made uncomfortable by the child's gender non-conformity. She literally tried to trans the gay away. She says so here https://www.ted.com/talks/susiegreenntransgenderaamotherss_story/up-next?language=en
