But then it could have been someone who is not fully aware of the current controversies. It might just have been someone who thought it was a bold, attention-grabbing quote.

I've looked at the author's previous work and the publications that she chooses to promote on her social media account: your perspective is not sustainable for Davis. If you mean somebody else, typically the choice of the cover falls under the remit of the senior editors in The Lancet group rather than an intern or junior member of staff.

I’m not sure what you mean. In some contexts I think it makes sense to refer to women, in some it makes sense to refer to a specific issue, function or body part. In this case I’m not sure the quote is the best one to represent the tone or focus of the article, and it was inevitably going to spark a barrage of angry criticism, and therefore distract from the interesting and important content of the article.

The dehumanising of any group has one purpose only and that is to make people less likely to complain when the rights of this group are stripped from them. This is the endgame of gender ideology.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/09/2021 13:06

necrophilic.

DrudgeJedd · 25/09/2021 13:34

Looking for a silver lining here, the Twitter ratio is beautiful. Also I'm pleased to see that the Vagina Museum is now just some stuff in storage and a few social media accounts. Hopefully the concept can be revisited in the future by a group with less toxic ideas about women and our bodies.

Genuine question here as this tweet has rattled me but I’m not hugely knowledgeable about the wider implications on the NHS. Are the NHS performing smears on trans men? And if a trans man pleaded period poverty, would charities for instance direct resources their way? I’m just trying to get my head around whether funding and resourcing for women is being impacted, genuinely not being goady

Igloo71 · 25/09/2021 13:48

And just to add, it’s rattled me because I’m now wondering if my GP views me as a body with a vagina. I’m feeling edgy about visiting the doctor I guess, if he shares this viewpoint.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/09/2021 13:48

Igloo - I hope that the NHS are performing smears on transmen because they were born women. Many also still have functioning female reproductive systems and thus periods. Maybe you mean transwomen?

When you say 'trans men' are you talking about female people or male people?

'Transman' is the term for a female transgender person - a woman who identifies as a man, so they are eligible to have smears on the NHS. A smear could not be carried out on a 'transwoman', which is the term for a transgender person who was born with a penis.

Igloo71 · 25/09/2021 13:51

Apologies, I probably do. As I said I don’t know much about this

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/09/2021 13:54

No need to apologise Igloo!

Igloo71 · 25/09/2021 13:54

So yes, if a man who identifies as a woman requested a smear, would he get one? And if he had financial issues, should he expect support in receiving san pro?

Jellycatspyjamas · 25/09/2021 13:56

A man identifying as a woman doesn’t have a cervix, so there would be nothing to screen via a smear test.

I’m pretty sure the answer is no they wouldn’t. I think it’s been inferred that they would but no health worker is going to pretend to perform a smear on a fictional cervix when presented with a penis.

^Apologies, I probably do. As I said I don’t know much about this^

You are not the only one confused, unfortunately. If you see trans or transgender in front of woman, girl and even female now, it means a human male who now identifies as a girl or woman. Confusing as anythingConfused

In Canada, yes. It's known as gender-affirming care to insist that a gynaecologist examines the cervix that isn't there

And, yes to the latter enquiry about support for san pro.

A while ago some Transwomen took part in some protest campaign and about 300 booked smear tests, undressed and the nurse was faced with penis and scrotum.

At my friends clinic they were told to simply say “I am sorry I am not able to locate your cervix today “

I would say what knobish behaviour but under the circumstances that might be considered transphobic.

Meanwhile of course all gender-identities should get the appropriate support and health care for their bodies.

SocialConnection · 25/09/2021 14:06

5000+ comments bulldozing that ghastly tweet.

Igloo71 · 25/09/2021 14:16

Thanks ladies (or should I say bodies with vaginas??!!) for clearing that up for me in such a helpful manner, I was a bit nervous about posting. It just got me wondering, as someone who has worked with young people all my adult life and handed over hundreds of tampons and condoms, what would I do if someone requested either (from very limited resources) when I knew they couldn’t be used for their actual purpose. I’m hugely supportive of people identifying as whatever they want to be, but sapping charitable resources…. Less so.

WomaninBoots · 25/09/2021 14:18

Am I right though in thinking this wasn't just a tweet but the actual front cover of the journal?

Yes, it is on the actual front cover of the physical journal.
WomaninBoots · 25/09/2021 14:27

I thought so.

Today they've tried virtue signalling with this pictures tweet.

It has been corrected in one of many scathing comments

"Bodies with vaginas", hmmm. Whatever happened to holistic medicine?

EarthSight · 25/09/2021 15:00

Not even people with vaginas anymore.

We're just bodies.

When and where was this?
