I am seething. She is very proud of her mixed heritage. Before the match, the commentary team were talking about how Emma and Laylah Fernandez both come from diverse backgrounds. But Jolyon doesn't bother to check any facts, just assumes she is white

The Left intelligentsia considers their own ultra race-consciousness as non-racist, which is mindblowing. If articles don’t mention race (because it’s irrelevant to the majority of people?) it’s seen as proof they are irredeemably racist. There can be no way back from the spiral of impurity.

All he sees is an attractive young woman who is apparently white. No interest in her massive success. The fact that she chose between tennis and another sport (I think it was Motocross) as she loved and was brilliant at both but it was a point where one needed to become the main focus.

That she took her a levels 3 months ago and got really good results maths economics not sure what else.

That she is the first qualifier to win a grand slam ever! And she didn't drop a set all the way through.

That to get there she must have incredible drive determination etc.

How dehumanising is he? ER has achieved such success and looks so joyful in those wonderful pictures. A young woman (just) who has won fairly in a competition with other women. No cheating by being a kitted out engine in a push bike race.

What a sneery git JR appears to be. Dunno, would he be cheering a male bodied contestant who won against women and girls? If one were honest cynical, one might say that it seems he can't be bothered seeing her as a full person. Just a load of rot about her ethnicity and sneer about how they took her picture. Urgh.

I assume he looked at the picture with male gaze and thought well that's pretty appealing. And then put that the papers interest in her was to appeal to male gaze.

Emma was born in Canada and came to the UK when she was two. Jolyon Maugham seems like a whole racist idiot; maybe he just assumes that Canada is a white country and anyone who is allowed to be born there and to have Canadian citizenship is white?

I doubt he knows she was born in Canada.

Emma's ethnicity will inevitably impact her earnings.

Just as Naomi Osaka has made a very large fortune, far more than she makes from tennis, out of Japanese endorsements, so Emma will have access to the Chinese market. She speaks Mandarin and will clean up.

Tbh it's just heartbreaking this young girls ethnicity is even a topic of discussion.

it's all a bit ridiculous anyway, about a Brit. I scratch the surface of a majority of families and you'll find relatives from elsewhere within a couple of generations in my experience.

Sure, as far as I know, mine are all European, so quite close to the UK, but both of my grandfathers were immigrants, and my son was born abroad so is only British by descent, and we live in another country again.
