“Reproductive justice is not just a “women’s issue” it’s an *everyone* issue” - Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez

This is after she gave an interview on CNN where she is just tripping over herself to avoid using the word women - opting for “a female or menstruating person”and “people who are not gender men”.

And now of course she’s doubling down and “wishes growth” to anyone who points out that it is, in fact, a women’s issue.

I’m so pissed off. I liked her.

I never liked AOC from the start when she was lying about being raised as a poor Brooklyn orphan. She actually grew up in a wealthy suburb outside NYC, with a mother and father. The father owned an architect business and his income never dropped below $500k per year. He paid for her university costs in full, although he passed when she was on her second year. But her mother is still alive. Her mother is portrayed as a hardworking cleaner, when in fact her mother owned a cleaning business and wasn’t actually scrubbing toilets herself.

Sounds a lot like Mhari Black the working class Weegie girl from the chip shop. Or not.

@Babamamananarama

I think it's about balance. I'd have had no problem with her saying 'and to be clear I want to acknowledge that pregnancy also affects some trans and non binary people' but then talking about women. She was making a strong and clear point about the axis of female oppression in rape and abortion being connected but it got lost because she ended up giving so much emphasis to trans/non binary etc that they became the central focus of what she was saying. When in reality trans people are a tiny minority of those affected by unwanted pregnancy.
Whilst I disagree that we should have to alter our language in any way whatsoever (because I don't believe in transgenderism at all, quite the opposite), I can't understand why people who want to play both sides against the middle don't do what you have suggested. Say you are including trans men and non-binary people with double X chromosomes, on the basis of their shared biology and will use the term women for ease of reference.

They would still get pushback, but it would look pretty lame. It would also start to beg the question as to what to call these people formally known as women, on the basis of their shared biology.

I think they know this, and that's why. I don't think Ocasio Cortez is a good faith actor, any more than say Laurie Penny.

HarpyOwl · 11/09/2021 17:52

The sheer idiocy of her tweet bemoaning the impact of abortion restrictions on "menstruating people". Pregnant women aren't in that category, are they therefore unaffected?

Abhannmor · 11/09/2021 18:46

Wishing you growth indeed. Wishing you'd grow up.

NiceGerbil · 11/09/2021 19:05

Penis holders!

Lol

About right though

I didn't, and that was before all of this. I can't put my finger on it, but it's the same feeling I get when I watch Justin Treudeau. Something's just off.
NiceGerbil · 11/09/2021 19:13

Again with the utter uselessness of all these gynaecological terms for women/ girls. Most are either but going to be understood by many or completely ignore the actual biological processes they reference.

So

This is an issue for menstruating people.

The periods STOPPING is the most common thing that makes a woman think she might be pregnant you total utter plonker.

So it EXCLUDES the exact group that are the ones who might want to have an abortion.

What a load of old cock.

So utterly utterly thick.

Knittingupastorm · 11/09/2021 19:22

“What this is about is controlling women's bodies and controlling people who are not gender men,”

That’s a quote from her from one of the articles. And maybe I’m just confused but this doesn’t even make sense within her own logic does it? People who are “not gender men” would presumably include transwomen and exclude transmen? When actually the abortion law has no effect on transwomen and does control the bodies of transmen.

NiceGerbil · 11/09/2021 19:22

Oops harpy got there first!

Saying abortion rights is an issue for menstruating people means that women move in and out of the group it's an issue for.

So women who

Have had menopause
Girls who have not started periods yet. And move input into that group at different ages.
Others who are not impacted by abortion rights sometimes/ often
Those who exercise a lot
Pregnant
BF
On certain types of hormonal contraception
Etc etc

I mean in the end no one can say with certainty who is affected as it's an ever shifting ill defined group.
And if course if you haven't started yet or are over menopause then nothing to do with you.

Bloody idiots.

Not a half second thought to what they are saying. Ever.

NiceGerbil · 11/09/2021 19:24

Some women do carry on having what seems like periods when Pg. And when bf. Etc.

So this is an issue for some women breastfeeding but not others.

Eh?!

NiceGerbil · 11/09/2021 19:29

These are all just euphemisms for words that are unmentionable / verboten. Which relate to one half of the population only.

People are not expected to think oho right yes menstruators and no more. They are expected to think oh right that means women and girls. No one thinks in terms of people with uteruses etc.

It's an extra step with a translation involved.
It is almost always biologically inept.. Dismissing the reality of female biology again. Well I never.
Plenty of people won't understand it.
And when things are internal unless there's a reason otherwise, you don't actually know that you have them. You assume because you know you're female.

It's such utter drivel.

And all because linking female biology to women and girls is unacceptable now.

Artichokeleaves · 11/09/2021 20:17

No.

It's a women's issue.

KimikosNightmare · 11/09/2021 21:46

@ScreamingMeMe

I didn't like her. She's an absolute dumbass and a liar. This from her doesn't surprise me at all.
Agreed. I never liked her.
miri1985 · 11/09/2021 21:58

I wonder if there will be a backlash against a term like "menusturator" by trans men/non binary. If you're a trans men you presumably want to see yourself as different to women rather than still lumped together in a group with the sex you want to get away from.

I think the backlash will come when people start referring to transwomen as "ejaculators" or "penis people". Which is the logical end to this language trend, but also seems quite likely to be a hate crime.

Trans men are not the ones all this is for, at all

And they are way quieter in general. Less pushy etc.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 11/09/2021 22:14

Covertly, very influential, however, when one considers Stephen Whittle.

@UsedUpUsername

“Luxury beliefs” wonderful wording. Says a lot succinctly.

NiceGerbil · 11/09/2021 22:23

No way will males be called ejaculators or people with testicles etc.

Men would shut it down immediately.

Because it's dehumanising. And referring to anyone by referencing their genitals is tbh insulting.

Women are more used to this.

Gash
Hole
The one with the big tits
Those with vaginas
Menstruators

I mean same old.

Tbh what really fucks me off is the fact that the phrases used to refer to us. As well as being dehumanising etc. Is that they are totally biologically illiterate when it comes to how things are in real life. And most are circular. People with ovaries. Unless reason to know for sure you have them. You are to assume you have because you know that females tend to have them. And of course plenty who don't have English as their first language, or do not have that knowledge ovaries = female. Won't understand it at all.

I mean ovaries don't exactly come up in day to day conversation do they.

Thing is the vast vast majority of those who push for this don't believe it at all.

They're doing it for other reasons.

Pallisers · 11/09/2021 22:40

this is what we are dealing with in the US. There is literally no one here whose political views I would otherwise support who would stick even a hair above the parapet in rejecting use of trans-inclusive language.

Millions of women in Texas are now without any access to proper health care and will have to continue pregnancies they don't want, may be harmful to their mental or physical health and deliver babies they cannot afford to raise.

But the most important thing in the language around this is to include the trans community. FFS. Can't trans community ever ever take one for the team?????

Passmeamenuatthetottenham · 11/09/2021 22:44

Yes, I saw an interview the other day where she was desperately trying to stick to 'menstruating person' and she still tripped herself up and started to say 'woman' and had to stop herself!
