JK Rowling in the firing line again

Haven't seen a thread on this yet, but if so, will delete for duplication.

JK Rowling is currently trending on twitter and she's yet again getting incredible abuse for her support for women and children.

For those less familiar with latest developments.

JK Rowling originally tweeted this thread:-
twitter.com/jk_rowling/status/1279755418621878272
which included the sentence from her:
I've ignored fake tweets attributed to me and RTed widely. I've ignored porn tweeted at children on a thread about their art. I've ignored death and rape threats. I'm not going to ignore this. 1/11

as part of a long considered and measured thread.

A Twitter person, Juan, later tweeted the following:twitter.com/gc_sanity/status/143604607324037120
3
(Image of JK Rowling with quote I've ignored porn tweeted at children )

JK clarified this to the tweeter in question to say Juan, I'll give you a moment to think hard about leaving that up . I reported every bit of porn so-called trans allies tweeted into Twitter threads where children were sending me artwork for the Ickabog. I didnt respond or retweet it because I don't want more kids to see it.

It seems as though Juan chose not to consider or delete, and the assumption is that JK has taken action against his tweet, which has led to his retraction of his original statement.

JK ignored the abuse on twitter so that the children engaging with her Ickabog tweets weren't exposed to the pornographic material tweeted into those threads.

The abuse tonight is a reaction to Juan's apology:twitter.com/no1guncle/status/1435952913638215684
On 16th July I posted a tweet of JK Rowling saying “I ignore porn tweeted at children”. This was entirely misleading as I took her words out of context. I was wrong to make this defamatory and untrue allegation and apologise to JK Rowling.

But as a result of his apology, JK is now yet again subjected to online abuse - to quote Helen Saxby: twitter.com/helensaxby11/status/1436048850293297173

To use her tweet to suggest she didn't care about children is about as defamatory as you can get.

From looking at many of those tweets that support 'Juan', we've entered into the world of the insane twitter.com/False_Neutra1/status/1436060318208253961

If you're on Twitter, you may want to use your voice. If you're not, you may want to have a look, even if you don't have an account', to understand what the attacks on JK Rowling really look like. It's pretty brutal, but there are are some fantastic replies in support too!

Christ some people are cunts

They lack the warmth and depth.

Fair point
Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/09/2021 09:19

Many of these people aren't what you would call well adjusted, mentally stable individuals. This will always be apparent when they are thwarted.

BraveBananaBadge · 10/09/2021 09:40

Astounding lack of ability to read and understand on display.

It's unbearable and I hope JKR doesn't even wind herself up looking. That's clearly a legally worded apology, closed to replies - it's serious, and there should be a lesson in there somewhere for these idiots. But yet they continue with their barely literate nihilistic takes. In some ways these pile ons are more meaningless every time. But as pps have said, look what they've come to stand for now. They are dangerously stupid.

allmywhat · 10/09/2021 10:09

Anyone else wondering if she’s biding her time and storing up ammunition to do an actual interview about this?

Between the abuse she’s had and the letters she must have received from women and now the “porn shown to children” angle that the TRAs are helpfully amplifying, I’m sure she has a lot to say.

Doyoumind · 10/09/2021 11:12

@IvyTwines2

I don't think reminding us that some of their number tweeted dick picks at children whose parents were posting their artwork on Rowling's Twitter feed is quite the smart move trans activists think it is.
Quite.

I just had another look at the trend and I'm astonished they think they are convincing anyone that JKR somehow condones porn and not just highlighting their idiocy and creepiness for all to see.

RoyalCorgi · 10/09/2021 11:40

This is yet another example of why posters telling us how we should be ashamed that other groups such as right wing politicians ‘align’ with us are quite hilariously blind to the ‘side’ they have chosen and the people their beliefs ‘align’ with.

This. I'd rather not be aligned to the Evangelical Right, but on balance I'd prefer to be aligned with them than with the people who post pornography on a Twitter thread aimed at children.

BraveBananaBadge · 10/09/2021 11:54

What a cesspit Twitter is. So many absolute idiots completely missing the point here - even giving abuse to a media law specialist clearly explaining defamation (the new insult appears to be 'she's not gonna fuck you bro', have seen that dismissive nonsense go out to Buck Angel today as well).

Thinking JKR has no right to go after a 'queer, working class' person whatever they've done. Refusing to see there has been any wrongdoing ('UK libel law sucks', moans another). There are many reasons why that tweet should not be allowed to stand. Its defenders really cannot see the wood for the trees.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/09/2021 12:13

I wonder what working class means in this context. JKR herself came from a working class background and made her money by her own efforts - with a large element of luck, of course, but with minimal financial support from her family.

As these people live in the moment with a very poor grasp of history, are mostly either very young or very immature, and appear to have very little drive or resilience, I suppose it's beyond their comprehension that a middle-aged person might once have lived a different sort of life, encountered some tough challenges, coped, and worked hard to make things better.

MorrisZapp · 10/09/2021 12:18

These people are insane. I don't want to lose work hours or my mental peace over it so I'm trying not to get involved in this one. I'll cave, I always do.

Better still her own documentary....

So very true. I'm glad my own teenage outpourings pre dated the Internet as I was similarly dismissive of 'rich old gits' at that age. Live and learn.
LazyViper · 10/09/2021 12:27

What a lot of hideous narcissists there are on Twitter. She’s incredible to put up with it at all. Hope she doesn’t read any of their brainpuke.

Also can they please fuck off and leave her to write in peace? I need the next Strike/Ellacott masterpiece ASAP. Thanks.

I think this is a really important point. Not all opinion is equal. It is why a multiplicity of opinions, and citation of fact and experience and knowledge and disagreement is so vital isn't it? Actually there is an old adage "empty vessels make the most sound" that seems apt here.
WeeBisom · 10/09/2021 12:35

Just putting my legal hat on for a second… a few people are complaining that Rowling has restricted free speech by threatening to sue for defamation. This is just incorrect. Under U.K. law and human rights law libellous speech is NOT protected - no one has the right to say defamatory things. So this is a not a free speech issue because Rowling has a right not to be defamed. I’ve also seen people say that Rowling is using her wealth to silence a working class person, but again that ignores the fact the working class person is not entitled to say these things. It’s actually quite rare for libel to reach a trial - most are settled at the pre trial mediation stage. And it’s not just the preserve of the rich and famous. Rowling is not exploiting a privilege only open to rich people , but is vindication a right everyone has.

Some people have rather sinisterly said that this means they now know the kind of things that “get to” or “hurt” Rowling. It’s pretty self evident that to suggest to a children’s author she overlooks child porn is hurtful to her reputation. But the purpose of defamation law is to stop the libel , so tweeters would be ill advised to use this as inspiration. Finally, anyone who retweets the statement is at risk of being sued . This isn’t a ballsy , plucky free speech issue ! Don’t retweet libel.

BraveBananaBadge · 10/09/2021 13:06

To conflate two threads, I was cheered by reading this from Gareth Roberts on the Judith Butler saga:

unherd.com/2021/09/judith-butlers-toxic-nonsense/

"So now we have queer theory, gender theory, critical race theory, out in the open. And this stuff is dangerous when it metastasises.
Because it’s not merely an irritant. It weakens and debilitates us. It amplifies neurosis and further damages already damaged people — the shouty unicorn-avatar children of Twitter have been driven out of their tiny minds by it, to their and our detriment."

Sophoclesthefox · 10/09/2021 13:10

Exactly, weebisom.

It’s such a terrible, dishonest take to try to paint JKR as the bad guy here. They’re saying that people who tweet porn onto a thread about a child’s book, libel a much loved children’s author by misrepresenting her reaction to that porn, and then complain that their “right” to do these things has been miserably violated because she’s rich and they’re not are the good guys…I do not think that that view will find much support outside a very small, self selecting population.

Fucking hell. She can’t do anything right for these people, can she?

And yes as the concept of guilt by association is such a slam dunk for half of the trans allies who rock up here, we might as well chuck that back at them.

Look at the kinds of people YOU share a “side” with!

If it’s a choice between people who show porn to children and promote libel against women OR Joe Toryboy, I’ll take the Tories, thanks.

SapphireSeptember · 10/09/2021 13:47

Same. I'd side with Satan himself over people Tweeting porn at kids. Angry Hopefully JKR taking legal action will help some of these muppets actually think before they start typing (although I doubt it.)

MondayYogurt · 10/09/2021 14:19

Always interesting to twitter search "@jk_rowling [insult]" and see how many slurs and curses are flying her way.

Passmeamenuatthetottenham · 10/09/2021 16:40

Yes, it cracks me up that this shower of utter bellends think they are on the right side of history, and that after this sort of behaviour they think that the whole 'you want to align with Tories' is some kind of gotcha that will make someone like me rethink my stance. Why the deep fried fuck would I want to be aligned with these people?

The desperation is getting more and more palpable. Its clear why they are trying to hit JKR with absolutely clearly ridiculous accusations. It's all they have. They have to draw attention to the fact that their own have been sending porn to kids because its the only way they can get at her. It's just misogynist lashing out at a woman that they hate because she is successful, classy and happy in her life. It's fucking pathetic.

I have to say, in all of the JKR 'dramas' on Twitter, this has been the one that has shocked me the most. The disgusting way I have seen people speaking about this woman, the way that 'The most marginalised and vulnerable members of our society' tweeting porn at kids has been almost completely ignored, the gaslighting and twisting. It's just unbelievable to be honest.

pecanmix · 10/09/2021 17:01

I'll align with whoever doesn't bow down to this absolute shit. I will side with whoever will protect my daughters rights.
I will side with whoever will stop indoctrinating children and causing irreparable damage.

HollowTalk · 10/09/2021 17:12

I think she is fantastic. I don't agree but she's got where she is today through luck though. Would we say Bill Gates was lucky?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/09/2021 17:15

I would. I don't think anybody has massive success without an element of luck. If Warner Bros hadn't seen the potential in the film series she would be known as a very successful author, but she wouldn't have made the enormous sums the films brought in. She has an excellent agent, which must have helped a lot.

RayonSunrise · 10/09/2021 17:52

Many, many schools run Twitter accounts and communicate to parents via Twitter. Twitter doesn't think of itself as an "adult" company.

They really do need to think harder about what they're trying to force.
