Guardian interview with Angelina Jolie refers to "her son Shiloh"

This is getting ridiculous. In an interview several years ago Angelina or Brad told an anecdote about their daughter (who was maybe 3 or 4) asking to be called John. This, coupled with her preference for boys clothes, convinced certain TRAs that she was trans. Apparently so much so that Simon Hattenstone in the Guardian thinks she's now a boy!

Well angelina has said before that Shiloh wants to be a boy and has explored gender non conformity for many years. Unsure why you’re placing the blame on TRA’s for this, it’s a situation angelina and Brad have spoken publicly about more than once over the last 10 years.

OldCrone · 04/09/2021 11:52

They've changed it already. It now says 'daughter'.

nauticant · 04/09/2021 11:52

If you check the article it currently says:

Faced with the inevitability of being papped when their daughter Shiloh was born in 2006, Jolie and Pitt auctioned off the photoshoot to People magazine in the US and Hello! in Britain for $7.6m.

Even The Guardian will sometimes prioritise "right-gendering" over promoting trans activism, at least today and for this article.

ButterflyAway · 04/09/2021 11:53

Though misgendering a person who hasn’t explicitly stated they are male is a bit off, but this is the guardian and they’re all cool and hip and do what they want regardless of what the real world thinks.

katemuff · 04/09/2021 11:55

FFS you can't be a girl with short hair without this crap these days.

AnnunciataZ · 04/09/2021 11:55

@nauticant if you look at the screenshot in my OP you'll see that it originally said "son".

AnnunciataZ · 04/09/2021 11:57

But given how quickly they've changed it maybe I should give them the benefit of the doubt!

The “She wants to be a boy” statement was more than a decade ago when Shiloh was about 4 years old and if you look at this quote it isn't clear whether this was simply about Shiloh expressing a childish wish:

Angelina told Vanity Fair in a 2010 interview that Shiloh has been exploring gender since age three. “She wants to be a boy,” Jolie said. “So we had to cut her hair. She likes to wear boy clothes. She thinks she’s one of her brothers.”

Ahh, readers of the article corrected The Guardian on twitter:

rabbitwoman · 04/09/2021 12:06

I am treading very carefully here.... Because I started a thread some time ago with some photos of Shiloh from the daily mail, out shopping and very obviously a girl.

..... It was piled on very quickly, I was told I was disgusting, I had made thrm feel sick, invading the privacy of a CHILD, etc.... The thread was pulled and I got a wrist slapping. Told to keep celebrity gossip to a more appropriate forum by MNHQ.

Okay, well, I think this is VITAL. because Shiloh is obviously an example of a child who wanted to be the opposite sex, was supported and allowed by her parents to express herself however she wished, and has grown out of it.

I will wait and see if I am ostracised, cancelled, Bearsted, deleted, banned and reprimanded before making further comments.....

KimikosNightmare · 04/09/2021 12:07

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, have never , as far as I'm aware, said Shiloh was anything other than their daughter. Other people have attempted to do otherwise.

I do hope the correction was requested by Angelina Jolie.

nauticant · 04/09/2021 12:10

Your assessment seems reasonable to me rabbitwoman.

Stick Shiloh into Google, select image search, and take it from there.

AnnunciataZ · 04/09/2021 12:12

@rabbitwoman I've noticed that in recent photos she looks very much like any teenage girl with earrings and long hair.

Until recently even Google had her as John Jolie-Pitt and male instead of Shiloh and female.

AFAIK there's been some level of confusion for years in the media, because Angelina in particular has always been pretty open about Shiloh not conforming to gender stereotypes etc, which is great.

It seems though that when this is discussed in interviews, the articles take it a step further and attach 'labels' in a way that Angelina doesn't. I've always thought she has a practical and pragmatic approach to Shiloh without pushing her in either direction, yet the media tend to take this and run with it in the name of 'woke' Hmm

Oh that's a shame- it would have been very satisfying if it had been changed at Angelina's request.

Oh and as an aside- Angelina Jolie is a very beautiful woman. I don't actually have a problem with an interviewer meeting her and mentioning that something like "in real life she is as beautiful as she is on the screen."- and leaving it at that. But the introductory paragraph to this is just dire.

NotBadConsidering · 04/09/2021 12:17

The Velvet Chronicle article I’ve linked sums it up well.

AnnunciataZ · 04/09/2021 12:20

Brad Pitt doesn't come off well in the article at all. Seeking out Harvey Weinstein for a film he was making when he knew the fucker had assaulted Angelina Angry

I feel so sorry for Shiloh. Webt through a phase when young of wanting to be a boy, as many girls do, myself include - basically a bit of a tomboy as we used to know it. Not that surprising really, for someone with multiple brothers. Clearly grows up to be a pretty standard, modern, non gender confirming teenage girl ( and who the fuck would want to conform to rigid and constraining, outdated stereotypes ) - and yet activists are constantly seeking to label her as trans. She may or may not identify as trans. She may or may not be a conventional buth lesbian. She may be a straight "tomboy" type as I am. But nobody knows because she nor her parents have ever publicly commented. And she's a teenager still finding out about herself. It's pathetic how people want to force a trans identity on her for what was, most probably, a normal phase she went through as a child.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 04/09/2021 12:41

Angelina Jolie has always just gone with how Shiloh felt comfortable without making it a big deal or anything it wasn't.

She could've easily jumped on the
bandwagon other celebs have done shouting about their teens 'identities' for Twitter likes.

Shiloh now looks no different to any other teenage girl.

Hopefully Ang will have given her enough confidence in herself that she will be able to cope with the constant comments about her looks and how attractive she is deemed to men.

Sonarl · 04/09/2021 12:48

She refers to her "three daughters" in this article from a couple of days ago

Why do you feel sorry for her? Clearly both her parents, regardless of anything else, have just left her to be herself and have taken steps to preserve their family's privacy.

How ironic that sleb centred Hello presents a better article about this than the po- faced Guardian.

Sonarl · 04/09/2021 13:04

I would feel sorry for any teenage girl put under any extra, unnecessary pressure and speculation about heir identity. It's hard enough being a teenage girl trying to become comfortable with your looks, sexuality, identity and put up with male objectification - must be even worse when you get random idiot journalists and half of twitter doing it.
