Utterly astounded by this turn of events. Speechless with surprise, such is my shock.

Orgasmagorical · 02/09/2021 17:22

Merager says she is speaking with progressive California lawmakers, like state senator Scott Wiener, in the hope that they change state law to better protect trans people.

Wiener, how appropriate.

Binglebong · 02/09/2021 17:22

If you go into an area where you’re expected to be nude, there has to be an indecent exposure exemption, she says. Merager says she may file complaints or lawsuits for the discrimination she says she has been made to suffer by law enforcement and women in the Wi Spa

I do think this is a valid point actually. To be clear, I don't think they or any male should in female changing rooms and there is often a difference in behaviour when exhibitioning but it's a loophole. Not all exhibitionist will be obvious so for them especially this could be a way to get out of trouble by using it as a defence. And there will be some genuine trans people who are not trying to be sexual who will get accused for simply being there.

What I'm saying, badly, is that this is a huge fucking mess that aids the guilty and harms the innocent (including some trans people).

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 02/09/2021 17:23

“If you go into an area where you’re expected to be nude, there has to be an indecent exposure exemption,”

...says the sex offender charged with indecent exposure 🤬

Datun · 02/09/2021 17:24

Merager claims to identify as female so he can access women’s locker rooms and showers,” reads an internal flyer by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department that was sent to law enforcement departments in southern California in late 2018.

But, but they're making it sound bad. When that's exactly what happens over every single incident where women have to share their single sex facilities with males.

A male doesn't have to get sexually excited by violating women's boundaries, to still violate women's boundaries.

But yes, of course, the ideology allows every single predator, every single bloody one, the means to access women and children.

Dashinghaberdashery · 02/09/2021 17:26

I wonder if Laurie Penny still thinks that the women and girls just should've averted their eyes from this sex offender.

Doyoumind · 02/09/2021 17:26

I can only echo everyone else's complete shock at this unexpected turn of events Hmm

Not one of those who defended this person will own their mistake though or accept this as any kind of proof concerns are valid, and that makes me furious.

NewMutiny · 02/09/2021 17:27

Who's the writer? I can't remember which one it was. The 'I would tell my 15 year old not to look at the penis because it's rude to stare' one?

She's going to be wanting to tweet about how it turns out she was wrong wrong wrong isn't she? Feminist that she is.

Orgasmagorical · 02/09/2021 17:27

Helen Joyce nails the issues an incident like this raises in her book Trans. She points out that indecent exposure and voyeurism are crimes. But if a man is allowed to identify as a woman, he is able to commit those crimes with impunity; and any woman who is the victim of such a crime can find herself on the wrong side of the law if she reports him.

Yet again we have no say in our safety. And these people are going on about feeling "unsafe" because we don't pander to their narcissistic, attention seeking SHIT Angry

NewMutiny · 02/09/2021 17:28

@Dashinghaberdashery

I wonder if Laurie Penny still thinks that the women and girls just should've averted their eyes from this sex offender.
Ah. That's the one. So many liberal feminists to choose from.
Helleofabore · 02/09/2021 17:28

And let’s see… a semi-erect penis is just a natural state and girls should just stop looking!

I say bring it ON for the court case to set precedence on this. It will sort out the prevarication once and for all. Because there will be NO where to hide some people’s intentions in pushing this.

ArabellaScott · 02/09/2021 17:29

Laurie Penney, NewMutiny.

Datun · 02/09/2021 17:30

And the sex offender in question is right. If they are classed as an actual woman, there is no get out clause, if they are naked and showing their penis to people, is there??

What's the get out clause? 'Women' are not allowed to be naked in an area where women are allowed to be naked?

For crying out loud.

Wasn't Yaniv enough? Who, if memory serves me correctly, only didn't win their case, because the women weren't trained in male genitalia, not because it was bloody predatory offending.

Blibbyblobby · 02/09/2021 17:30

I assume the TRAs stock responses will be one of these:

This poor trans woman is being prosecuted because laws class her lovely gentle female penis as male, these transphobic laws must change for the good of all women, both the ones with penises and the ones who are currently denied the opportunity to learn just how truly womanly a penis can be*

Or

Typical GC transphobia. This was a sex offender not a trans person so why is it anything to do with trans women. I am so sick of GCs saying trans women shouldn’t be in female spaces because they are all perverts.**

  • although why female people who are just female and don’t identify as the same gender as cis- and trans- woman are also supposed to share spaces with lady penis I have no idea…it’s not like we have anything in common with male women.

** spectacularly missing the point as ever that the issue is not and never was trans women per se, it’s the inability to differentiate between benign and malicious male bodies until after a malign event.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/09/2021 17:30

Luckily it looks like people have archived all these shameful opinion pieces and their fake news and victim blaming. The Internet Never Forgets.

Looks like that's aged badly. A problem for Owen on Twitter. You'd think he might be able to see these things coming from time to time. Especially with an erection in a women's changing room maybe?

NewMutiny · 02/09/2021 17:33

@ArabellaScott

Laurie Penney, NewMutiny.
Thank you Arabella. And I could have JFGI but who wants to give arseholes extra exposure? (apart from penis spa guy who's probably not averse...)
BraveBananaBadge · 02/09/2021 17:34

The language of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department bulletin tells it like it is - wonder if they'll get it in the neck for that?

Interesting the Post report pitches the protests as very much right wing v left wing and doesn't mention feminists or the usual 'anti trans' narrative at all. Interesting.

Andy Ngo (the reporter) has already been cancelled though hasn't he so I guess that'll be where they try and discredit all of this?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/09/2021 17:34

I for one am intrigued to see how TRAs will play it. I think Blibby is probably correct that most will go for one of those two options. But I haven't ruled out something novel.

Franca123 · 02/09/2021 17:35

Can't wait to see what Sam Levin at the Guardian says about this. I remember his reporting on it being particularly unpleasant. Are we to understand that the Guardian now campaigns for the rights of sex offenders to sex offend? If this doesn't wake people up nothing will.

PleasantBirthday · 02/09/2021 17:39

I think they're just going to ignore it and blithely sail on by. You can't make them acknowledge that this is what they are campaigning for and they just won't do it.

FightingtheFoo · 02/09/2021 17:40

But this never happens

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 02/09/2021 17:40

What I'm saying, badly, is that this is a huge fucking mess that aids the guilty and harms the innocent (including some trans people).

As soon as a male person, trans or otherwise enters a spacing where girls and women are likely to be naked, he/they are not 'innocent'.
