Eddie Izzard Graun correction

I've searched but couldn't find anything on this, sorry if it's been covered - just been reading through the This Much I Know feature and saw Eddie was the subject at the start of this month.

The self-flagellation of the correction at the bottom is hilarious and says it all...

  1. Take your Guardian firmly in hand.
  2. Roll it up into a stiff tube.
  3. Guess.

As pronouns only exist to make language easier, as soon as they get in any way complicated or confusing then removing the is the best option tbh.

However, I don't think there's any confusion at all about continuing to call Izzard 'he', if he's comfortable with it. He probably realises that insisting on 'she' might impair his ability to get male roles (which tend to be more plentiful and lucrative at his age than female ones).

BraveBananaBadge · 21/08/2021 20:17

I'm just fascinated by the way they tie themselves in knots. (The Guardian, not Eddie - who I can't imagine had anything to do with the correction.)

I forgot the feature in question is an Observer one but that's not really the point, in the circs. It's quite unbelievable they corrected themselves after finding out 'recent news came to light' about Eddie's gender identity, because didn't all that happen... months ago... in the, erm, Guardian?

Hypothetically they could end up having to put a clarification like this under any story about any person if this is how they're going to play the game.

It reads like.a Private Eye joke. I suppose that’s what the Graun is now.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/08/2021 20:38

I remember when Eddie was cool and funny.

PaleGreenGhost · 21/08/2021 21:00

I remember when I religiously bought the Guardian. Also sigh!

FrankButchersDickieBow · 22/08/2021 01:38

I remember when Eddie was funny AND I bought the Guardian.

Times have changed so much 😪

This piece gave me the first hollow laughter of the day.

As an aside, it doesn't bother me at all if someone misgenders me. This could be because I know for sure which sex I am. That misgendering is such a crime in some contexts but just a faux pas in other contexts should provoke some thinking about why the difference exists.

AtlasNeverShrugged · 22/08/2021 03:24

The left always eats itself.

Awkwardy · 22/08/2021 10:27

I remember when Eddie was funny, I bought the Guardian and I could genuinely vote for Labour, the Lib Dems or the Green Party without feeling ashamed.

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 22/08/2021 10:29

Hang on, I was deleted for what? Using the pronouns that Eddie now claims they are happy for people to use?

I can't keep up.

I can't remember what you said, Mullets. Presumably not just a 'misgendering' as I used he/his immediately after your post, as that's what makes sense to me and we now know he doesn't really care either way I see no reason not to. Confused

But who knows, mods sometimes presumably sometimes delete without having read the context of a post. The only time I think I've been deleted for 'misgendering' was when I referred to someone as 'he'... but the subject of my post was the newly elected Donald Trump, not the person the thread was mainly about.

And the centre are confused? (Not that the libdems are the centre nowadays)

SerendipityJane · 22/08/2021 10:49

Most appropriate pronoun for Izzard is "twat" - or it's gender-free version "idiot".

Elle est un massif cul, n'est ce pas ?

And even scarier, the Tories were solidly bad. I never thought the day would come when their parliamentary candidate is the only one that accepts that women are adult human females.

Jaysmith71 · 22/08/2021 11:01

The Centre are opportunist cowards who'd sell out their principles for a handful of magic beans if it came with a chance of being junior minister in charge of paperclips at weekends.

IheartJKR · 22/08/2021 11:01

I used to love Eddie.

I think it was just about how Eddie may well be having the last laugh, getting everyone to call Eddie whatever Eddie wants, and whenever Eddie changes Eddie's mind everyone else must go along with whatever Eddie says.

Anyway, it wasn't that interesting, just funny to see who is making the rules and how are we supposed to keep up when even the Guardian can't?

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 22/08/2021 11:20

Actually, I may have used the word pandering, which may not be allowed... anyway, great to see Eddie getting more attention, which is always what Eddie wants. So heartwarming.

Zandathepanda · 22/08/2021 19:04

When I read this I heard it in John Cleese’s voice in a Monty Python sketch.
