Fucking excellent.

Love the responses too.

@rabbitwoman

That swig of water.

And she pulled the mike towards her so decisively.

It's like she knew something had to be said....

Look, I am in awe of that dignified little act of defiance, but the reality is that these young women are going to be quizzed again and again on what exactly they meant in the coming days. It is going to be poured over and analysed and debated - and they will be pushed and pressured into elaborating, we all know it.

And they may well be thinking, if Martina navratilova can lose work and sponsorship and funding then so can we. I would not blame them if they explained it all away at the next opportunity after some careful coaching, and we are disappointed with what they say.

But don't be. It really was very clear what they thought. And if they declare a very different view in the next few days, it will also be clear that they have been silenced.

The three of them will always be heroes.

Agree with you. In the days to come they may well all toe the line. But we know what they really think. That silence was awesome.
Onlinedilema · 04/08/2021 08:30

Excellent response.
Closed down the conversation straight away.
What a role model Emily is.
Great to see such strong determined women as role models.

ChateauMargaux · 04/08/2021 08:48

Great response..silence... water swig.. no thank you.

ChewtonRoad · 04/08/2021 08:48

No insults, no name calling, no threats, and not so much as a hint of dismissal of anyone else. Just nine seconds of silence and a polite refusal to engage with someone determined to stir the pot because he could.

Brava, you wonderful women.

TatoAndBeans · 04/08/2021 09:40

@CharlieParley

I just keep thinking about the male entitlement behind the question.

Three brilliant female competitors give their all in a fight with an exceptional athlete achieving an Olympic Record and a tight competition for silver and bronze.

There's a male competitor who does not finish and so comes last.

There are two reasonable explanations, I don't know enough about weightlifting to understand which is the more likely:

  1. the male competitor has demonstrated terrible technique according to some observers who understand weightlifting. As in truly atrocious.

2.) Hubbard threw the competition on purpose according to other observers who understand weightlifting.

So, a competitor who failed to qualify for the final, who had terrible technique and who either simply wasn't good enough to compete or threw the competition.

And that male journalist is so fucking bored listening to female winners talk about females, he just has to ask a stupid question about that truly mediocre male competitor.

Because who cares about outstanding female athletes? Not that journalist. Especially since he must have known that the controversy makes an answer that doesn't land a a female athlete in trouble impossible. But he's asking anyway. Coz talking to female athletes about female achievements is too much.

What an arsehole.

But the women - pure class.

All of this. You’re at the pinnacle of your career, you’re essentially the strongest woman in the world… and you’re still expected to be subservient to a egotistical man’s publicity stunt. No thank you.
YetAnotherSpartacus · 04/08/2021 09:43

Did Hubbard really come last?

PronounssheRa · 04/08/2021 09:48

@YetAnotherSpartacus

Did Hubbard really come last?
Didn't even register a lift. So a woman lost her place for someone who didn't even place. It was all about validation.
YetAnotherSpartacus · 04/08/2021 09:49

Yeah - I did know that - but I wondered if Hubbard got the actual coming last booby prize - as in was officially placed last!

Mollyollydolly · 04/08/2021 09:52

Oooo, now my Facebook banner.

Looks like I am officially out out.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 04/08/2021 10:16

Oh, my! That's a definite 'don't let the door hit you in the arse' result.

KittenKong · 04/08/2021 10:22

I love that!
(And ‘booby’ prize Grin)

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 04/08/2021 10:25

Love it, absolutely perfect response.

And yes, all about validation for Hubbard. More concerned about being an Olympian in the women's category than actual performance. That's what women's sport is apparently - world stage validation to do a silly little heart and a head tilt taking the space of a serious sportswoman Angry

That and opening the door for the younger and fitter ones who will trounce women in years to come.

morningtoncrescent62 · 04/08/2021 10:38

No insults, no name calling, no threats, and not so much as a hint of dismissal of anyone else. Just nine seconds of silence and a polite refusal to engage with someone determined to stir the pot because he could.

Absolutely this. Those young women showed such presence of mind not to get drawn in. The press conference should have been all about them and their magnificent achievements, not about a mediocre also-ran who came last. Even if they're coerced into equivocating later (and I think we can all understand the pressure they'll be under) nothing will erase the memory of their perfect responses. That's what Olympians look like.

Lynnikins · 04/08/2021 10:43

The silence - and then Sarah Robles' response - tells you all you need to know about how the medal winners feel.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 04/08/2021 11:56

archive of the Spectator article: Laurel Hubbard? No thank youarchive.is/Tmdbk

Interesting backstory for Sarah Robles that adds to my admiration of her sporting achievements:

Sarah Robles, the woman who’s “no thank you” is now doing the rounds on Twitter, is an American woman of Mexican decent. Robles was the bronze medallist and has a deformity in her arm called Madelung’s deformity that leads to pain while she is lifting. She also has Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, a condition I have myself.

The modern mythology that sex exists on a spectrum, means that many masculine women have to endure increasingly ignorant attitudes about their bodies. These attitudes limit the ability of girls to embrace the natural diversity that exists in women.

I'm increasingly aware of the co-opting of PCOS onto the alleged spectrum. I'm tired of this modern mythology that has no grounding in physiology.

Good content but poor spelling in that article!

OldCrone · 04/08/2021 12:17

@Masdintle

Good content but poor spelling in that article!
Some of the content is a bit off as well:

Pretending that a person with a receding hairline, hairy armpits and the bulge of a penis is a woman...

Only one of those things makes someone not a woman.

Signalbox · 04/08/2021 12:42

I’m not sure you can read too much into a refusal to comment. Emily has been supportive of Hubbard. Although she can obviously only speak for herself so perhaps the other contestants feel differently. And perhaps Emily would feel differently if Hubbard had prevented her from getting to the olympics in the first place.

fitnessvolt.com/emily-campbell-defends-laurel-hubbard/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

“She’s a human being and she has feelings and she’s qualified for this competition fairly like everyone else. The IOC have rules we all have to abide by. The only person’s performance that I can control is my one,” Campbell said.

‘I’ve got to make sure I’m completely in control of that and I go out in the best shape I can and have no excuses.”
