Quite apart from anything else, is that the quality of communication we have to expect from the National Public Service Broadcaster? ‘Bringing hate’? Sheesh.
Also, and weirdly, they seem to have missed out ‘Gender Reassignment’ from their little list there.

@BernardBlackMissesLangCleg

God the BBC make me tired.

They don't seem to understand that they are in a very vulnerable position. I have Netflix and Amazon Prime, Audible, podcasts and several pay per view streaming services. I could entertain myself at home and in my car from now until kingdom come and never watch or listen to any BBC content ever again.

However I continue to pay my licence fee because I believe the BBC is A Good Thing.

But every time they show themselves to be so out of touch with the people who fund them, every time they do this 'considerably more enlightened that yew' thing, they undermine that goodwill. It's like watching a baby play at the top of a skyscraper. Oblivious and in such danger.

That's issue 1.

Issue 2 is referring to a person who has literally tried to convince the world they are the opposite sex as 'reluctant'. What utter bullshit

Spot on Bernard. I feel the same about the BBC. The woke doubleplus goodthink is so entrenched, they don’t see the danger they are in.

@Saltovinegar

According to the BBC LH is the first openly transgender athlete to compete at the Olympics. So is that an admittance that others have gone under the radar?

As far as I'm concerned LH is the first openly obvious cheating male to compete at the Olympics.

Apparently there are three other trans athletes competing in Tokyo. Quinn is a footballer who uses they/them and also does not use a first name. Quinn was assigned female at birth. Skateboarder Alana Smith is also non binary. BMX cyclist Chelsea Wolfe is (I think) a male to female transgender person.

Maybe they have come under less scrutiny because being a non binary athlete doesn't necessarily mean you have the physiological advantages that come with male puberty. Similarly, BMX cycling or skateboarding aren't really that different to equestrian events where the horse is doing the physical work and men and women compete equally.

Unlike many people on this board, I believe that arrangements for transgender athletes should be made on a sport by sport basis. In the case of weightlifting, men do have huge advantages over women. Without wishing to be personal, I want Laurel to have a rewarding life and achieve her dreams. However, Laurel comes from a very wealthy family. It's hard to see comments by representatives of New Zealand sport saying inclusion is important when Roviel Detenamo, a young woman of colour, does not have a place.

Mrsjamin · 02/08/2021 11:09

Complaint submitted. They cannot get away with this.

Mrsjamin · 02/08/2021 11:11

Quinn calls herself nonbinary, is female and is competing in the womens section - i.e. not worth talking about. Also please don't say 'assigned female at birth'. People's sex is observed at birth, there's no assigning needed.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/08/2021 11:11

Quinn played on the women's team, I believe. There was a Canadian archer too, who is a trans woman.

TalkingOutYerArse · 02/08/2021 11:11

The weightlifting event is today. 11:50am our time I believe? Going to be an interesting one news wise.

Autocomplete added that space there, btw. Hmm

AfternoonToffee · 02/08/2021 11:12

@Antinerak

If transphobes' are really that upset about being blocked on social media, it's probably best they are so they can witter away to themselves without inconveniencing anyone else with their lies.

I'm glad they're taking the bullshit Laurel is facing seriously, she deserved much better than this. I'm also glad they'll be getting the police involved- too fucking right they should.

Best of luck to her!

Oh well the gulags will be getting very busy, we can watch the brave and stunning from there.
Mrsjamin · 02/08/2021 11:12

@nettie434 there's no way you actually watched the BMX or skateboarding events - the abilities of males and females is dramatically different!! There are pretty much no sports that don't have a marked significant difference between men and women. No 'sport by sport' rule is needed.

AnyFucker · 02/08/2021 11:15

Not going well for the BBC there. Shame.

Agreed - the difference in muscle twitch fibres and the ability to lay down explosive force make a huge difference in accelerating, gaining greater air height and being able to pull off the spectacular and complex tricks for the sports that were mentioned. It's certainly not the vehicle doing the hard work but very much the power and control of the person using it.

Plus, injury recovery is very different and can have different consequences. etc. etc.

BettyFilous · 02/08/2021 11:20

This sounds so ill-informed TBH. You need to review last weekend’s street skateboarding event finals scores. The men and women were scored against the same marking criteria using the same competition format and the women’s scores (and medal-winning scores) were much, much lower than the men's despite being peers in world ranking etc. The men had a massive strength and cardiovascular advantage in terms of covering the course and getting height on the rails etc for their tricks and it showed in the scoring.

nettie434 · 02/08/2021 11:20

I can say whatever I like providing it conforms to the board guidelines. Observed at birth is more accurate but I was trying to find a respectful way of distinguishing between transgender athletes who have not undergone any hormonal treatment and those who have.

If you want to police my language, then I don't consider it polite to use female and she in reference to Quinn.

FindTheTruth · 02/08/2021 11:24

the phrase 'social moderation' included the BBC email address [email protected] on the BBC website Social media trolls: BBC Sport strengthens stance against hateful messages ...brings to mind 'dogma compliance', 'purity checking', 'queer theory thought police', 'witch reporting' among others in the BBC's social and psychological control of the narrative

KevinBaconsJeans · 02/08/2021 11:26

As an aside, so many on that thread saying 'why can Hubbard compete when Semenya - a woman - cant?'

[Facepalm]

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 02/08/2021 11:29

As a general point, my understanding from the children of family friends is that NB is becoming a complex space as there are differences between people who:
adopt a pronoun;
adopt a pronoun and declare the self as male-presenting/female-presenting (may or may not be consonant with birth sex);
adopt a pronoun but pursue a path of surgical removal of secondary sex markers.

I suspect that it would be helpful to have data on all of those, but particularly the final group and the degree and nature of the surgical intervention involved.

Datun · 02/08/2021 11:30

BBC is a national broadcasting company. Surely to God they don't really, honestly think most people subscribe to transgenderism? To the point of threatening legal action for those who disagree??

That's almost more worrying than anything else. They're meant to have their finger vaguely on the pulse, not up their arse.

Triphazards · 02/08/2021 11:46

They may not know that CS is male.
merrymouse · 02/08/2021 11:46

It's such a bad article!

They atleast quote Ross Tucker, but then quote Harper

In weightlifting we divide the categories into weight, so we don't have big weightlifters competing against little weightlifters. If you look at the women that Laurel Hubbard is competing against, they're all very large women.

This is so disingenuous. None of them are as big as Hubbard. The maximum weight class for women is 87kg, but Hubbard would qualify for a higher weight category if competing as a man and therefore need to lift heavier weights to qualify. That class just doesn't exist for women.

I really want somebody to ask Budgett how he is planning to include trans men, and whether they should get a head start in qualifying events to be inclusive.

merrymouse · 02/08/2021 11:49

Similarly, BMX cycling or skateboarding aren't really that different to equestrian events where the horse is doing the physical work and men and women compete equally.

I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of these events.

merrymouse · 02/08/2021 11:51

In sports where sex is not an advantage, like dressage, there just aren't categories for men and women.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 02/08/2021 11:54
