Grant Karte sentenced for threatening Joanna Cherry with sexual violence

I can't claim to be very familiar with Scottish politics, but Joanna Cherry is an internationally admired and appreciated defender of women's rights, and got threatened with sexual violence for it like so many others. While it's heartening to see justice served for once, it's depressing to think how few in the SNP, or how few in general will speak to condemn this horrible man's horrible actions. So many would much rather be tearing down other prominent women for saying women's rights are human rights.

Just came here to post this.

Still waiting to hear Sturgeon condemn any of the abuse or threats Cherry has received.

Any day, I'm sure.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 30/07/2021 16:31

god what a fucking mess the SNP are

I'm also not familiar with how the betting agencies over there work, is it possible to put some money on it? I'd be dithering about whether to go with "never" or "belated, well-couched, and tepid."

What was the sentence?

Thelnebriati · 30/07/2021 16:48

A community payback order supervised for 15 months, 160 hours of unpaid work in the community, and he can't contact her for 5 years.

A MAN who sent threatening Twitter messages to SNP MP Joanna Cherry has been ordered not to contact her for five years.

Grant Karte, 30, has also been given a community payback order, supervised for 15 months, with 160 hours of unpaid work in the community.

Why no jail time? Well I know it’s Scotland and he’s a man, and she’s a woman, but all the same...

Acht you know full well she's too busy being "feminist to her fingertips"!
Masdintle · 30/07/2021 17:17

Thanks for sentencing links

Jackgrealishscurtains · 30/07/2021 17:25

Is Nicola Sturgeon seriously not going to say anything about this? WTF?!

thefourgp · 30/07/2021 17:32

He should never be able to contact her again. I don’t understand why there’s only a five year limit been imposed.

A man who sends a message to a woman threatening to rape her is a threat to all women.

The only photo of him shown is him wearing a face mask. There should be maskless photos of him included in the news articles to help others avoid him.

I’m a Nicola Sturgeon supporter and she needs to speak out against him and what he did. There’s not a strong enough stance against misogyny in our society.

ScreamingMeMe · 30/07/2021 17:37

She added: "I am very disappointed that no one in the SNP hierarchy has acknowledged or condemned Grant Karte’s threats towards me despite his criminal conviction.

"His name was removed from the roll of party members after his offence was publicised, so I can only assume that his behaviour has been recognised as reprehensible, yet no one has said so publicly on behalf of the SNP and I have not received the same support as other women who have suffered abuse, often a good deal less serious and falling short of criminality."

Absolutely disgraceful.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 30/07/2021 17:54

A community payback order supervised for 15 months, 160 hours of unpaid work in the community, and he can't contact her for 5 years.

And that’s supposed to deter him from threatening women with violence? What a farce.

Joanna Cherry is heroic. But what a bunch of wimps surround her.

Cabinfever10 · 30/07/2021 18:27

So he threatened to f* her up has a criminal record for possession of a knife but he's not a violent man (according to his lawyer)🤔
They should have thrown the book at him and Nichola Sturgeon should be personally condemning all threats against women especially towards a member of the SNP, but we all know she won't.
I do wonder if JC is sending a rather public shot across her bough with her comments about the equality act and maya forstater judgment. I would definitely support her should she take it to court

ErrolTheDragon · 30/07/2021 18:40

Keeping it at arms length and touching it gingerly?Confused

Sophoclesthefox · 30/07/2021 19:11

Glad that he’s been convicted. There needs to be a big, strong statement that threats of violence and abuse on social media towards women in politics will not be tolerated in the SNP, and it’s very depressing that the delay in this appearing is probably because making the statement will upset too many people who think Cherry had it coming Angry

What a dismal mess Scottish politics is in.

ArabellaScott · 30/07/2021 19:20

He obviously didn't wave any haberdashery at her.
littlbrowndog · 30/07/2021 19:23

Where is our feminist to her wee fingertips sturgeon not speaking out about this

Like that video she made about transphobia

Shouldn’t she make a video that sexual and violent threats to women politicians shouldn’t be accepted in inclusive Scotland

Cmon sturgeon. Do it. Do it

Even if you have to grit your teeth and squeeze them feminist finger nails into your palms.

Just one or two words. Cmon

littlbrowndog · 30/07/2021 19:29

From that piece

In 2020 Sturgeon attacked the misogyny of “keyboard warriors”, highlighting the case of Rhiannon Spear, the Glasgow councillor standing as a Holyrood candidate in the following year’s election. She had tweeted: “Disagreement is what democracy is all about — vile, toxic abuse is not. And on the subject of calling it out even when it’s on my own ‘side’, disagree with @RhiannonV as much as you like, but leave out the misogynistic abuse.”

Appalonia · 30/07/2021 20:59

Ridiculous sentence. At the same time, Marion Millar faces a TWO YEAR prison sentence for tweeting a photo of a RIBBON???

Coatandhat · 30/07/2021 23:18

So Marion Millar is standing trial with the prospect of jail for tweeting a photo of a ribbon while he gets community service for directly threatening an MP with rape and violence. Words fail me.

dyslek · 30/07/2021 23:54

Love how the scardy bear get to hide his face. Who's the big man now Grunt?

How can you support Sturgeon? She has betrayed women in Scotland, she is pandering to Stonewall, she is a liar and very possibly a thief, she is an embarrassment to Scotland.
