Sexual predators are boarding trains with the sole intention of targeting female passengers (Sunday Times)

Can anyone do a share token? I don’t think I saw a thread on this. I’ve c&p’d some paras.

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/get-on-board-to-help-snare-the-train-perverts-passengers-told-bwgdv283f

“There are people who go from A to B, get a return train and come back immediately,” she said. “That’s not normal. We also know that there are people who go on the network and are on it for a long time. If you’re on a journey for 12 hours, what are you doing?”

This is Lucy D’Orsi, new chief constable of British Transport Police.

She has also ordered a review of the laws to ensure that offenders can be successfully prosecuted for actions that have been going unpunished. This includes the sending of obscene images to strangers in the same carriage through AirDrop and Bluetooth technology.

It was men's behaviour on trains that meant I learnt to drive - I'd previously been reluctant - but I got so sick of spending my daily commute dealing with perverts and creeps.

AssassinatedBeauty · 15/07/2021 12:35

I thought it was in Feminist Chat, has it been moved?

Off topic posts that are obviously goady are going to be prone to deletion, ime.

DdraigGoch · 15/07/2021 12:37

@Sonarl

Why is this in sex and gender not chat?
Because perverts target women due to their sex.
GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 15/07/2021 12:54

Honestly, it's almost as if some people haven't grasped the idea that feminism is necessary due to women's oppression being due to their sex.

Colour me utterly amazed.

PhiRhoSigma · 15/07/2021 13:20

@Tiari

I don't think this will be a new thing, probably been going on for years?
Indeed! Growing up in London 30+ years ago, I encountered exhibitionist blokes wanking in alcoves on the London underground on more than one occasion.
Sonarl · 15/07/2021 13:24

I know but how is this not a genuine feminist issue, as opposed to specifically about the trans agenda damaging women, which is what I thought this section had been partitioned off for?

Micemakingclothes · 15/07/2021 13:24

This is a long-standing problem with communal transportation. It got a bit of attention a few years back when there was a bit of focus on the issue of assault on airplanes.

TalkingOutYerArse · 15/07/2021 13:25

@Masdintle

Why have you brought trans into it, Mishy? This is about predatory men on trains. Or have you misread the word trains?
Brilliant.

@Shedbuilder

Longest tube journey of my life involved jumping on the last train from Cockfosters (I know, I know) after being dropped off by a colleague on the way back from a work event. Late at night, empty carriage — except that seconds before the doors closed a man got in with me, sat opposite me and as soon as the doors closed whipped out his dick and started wanking. When I looked over to the emergency call handle he said 'Don't even think about it.' Big bloke. I got my book out and pretended to read until we got to the next station, which seemed like hours later, and dashed onto the platform, to find the station deserted. Stood on the platform like a demented women yelling 'There's a man wanking in this carriage.' Nothing happened, no one came, the tube doors shut and off he went. And then I had to wait on my own in the dark in a strange area for a bus.

The most alarming of many tube frottagists, flashers and gropers.

Really gross. Unbelievably that people are expected to just put up with this frightening shit.

Is there nowhere that human beings can be in an enclosed space where male ones don't start sexually assaulting female ones (and/or children)?

Just imagine if... they stopped. Would seem like a different world, hey?

This is absolutely frightening. So sorry you experienced this Shed.

Sex and gender seems like the right place for a thread on sexual assault on women who are targeted by male predators due to being of the female sex.

DdraigGoch · 15/07/2021 14:01

They wouldn't dare try on my trains. I remember an Irishman who went for a smoke in the toilet and then sat down next to a 15 year old girl. No one sits next to a stranger on a train if there are free seats, this train was really quiet. Obvious creep.

So, despite it being 1am in the middle of January, I chucked him off at an unmanned station. Next train to the ferry port in six hours time.

invisiblesuit · 15/07/2021 14:05

I was on an overnight train once (in Switzerland), and a young man came into my sleeper carriage, wanting to lie down next to me and have sex. I found and reported to the guard, who wouldn't do anything about it. In my opinion a man who does that should be thrown off the train, not just left to get on with it. The train was otherwise empty.

DaisiesandButtercups · 15/07/2021 14:20

It is really important to have guards on trains. It is crazy that train companies don’t understand this.

TheHandmadeTails · 15/07/2021 14:24

Just to clarify I did post it in Sex & Gender, it hasn’t been moved.

Not to mention the government. Guards are currently under threat from cutbacks like never before.

Thanks, Talking. It was probably only four or five minutes but time slows down on such occasions. Fortunately I was in my 30s and stroppy and bounced back and I knew the doors would open at some point.

After that if I ever saw a woman being harassed on the tube or at a bus stop I'd walk up confidently and stand beside her and start making conversation with her. The men tended to slink off.

RubyFakeLips · 15/07/2021 16:05

That article references her desire to see an increase of reporting but what is actually going to be done?

When I look how rape convictions seems to descend into a he said/she said issue, where the victim has to almost be proven to be worthy of being supported by the law I can’t imagine that they are going to do much about groping for example.

Been using the tube alone since 8 or 9. Have definitely been groped, although thankfully not in childhood, the one time I kicked off about it, was treated like a crazy person, was so demoralising.

Additionally I doubt the skills of BTP, I’ve reported 2 aggressive beggars on my regular journey for nearly 18 months pre COVID. Nothing was ever done, not in the same level of crime of course but if they can stop that happening at the same time, on the same route nearly every day, will these sexual predators really face any justice.

I started doing this a few years ago (inspired by a mumsnet thread!) and it is so effective.

Leafstamp · 15/07/2021 16:15

This is yet another example of the lengths predators will go to in order to access their victims (it goes without saying that the vast majority of predators are male with female victims).

And the TRAs still go on about how what their campaigning for won't open up easy targets for predators?!

When will it get through their thick skulls?!

Signalbox · 15/07/2021 16:23

Not remotely surprised. I was victim of sexual harassment on a GWR train a few years ago. I reported to the BTP and complained to the train company (in relation to their guards not making themselves visible on evening trains). BTP said the CCTV wasn't good enough to evidence that the man had been doing what I said he had been doing (having a wank and following me when I moved up the train) and GWR just said that they weren't responsible for what passengers did on their trains and it wasn't the guard's job to ensure a safe environment for passengers and that they had other tasks to carry out. I stopped using that service as I no longer felt safe travelling alone.

I wasn’t believed when I was groped on a ferry.
FloralBunting · 15/07/2021 16:31

It's been an issue on every train line I've ever used. And, tbh, I've seen similar behaviour on buses. Male sexual entitlement is endemic. And sure, reporting. Like the phonecalls I made to the police about the man flashing my daughter, that were ignored by any actual police? What. Ever.

FloralBunting · 15/07/2021 16:36

And can we stop asking why a poster has chosen to post in this section? It's quite evident that the feminists who understand our oppression is related to our sex have been relegated to this board while the naice feminists discuss karaoke so if you want to start threads about stuff there do it yourself. Some of understand that being able to reference sex matters, to coin a phrase. Let the lib fems have the other board and just carry on FWRing. It's not like trolls will leave us alone wherever we go, so let's just get on with it.
