Mr S hears word that the editorial floors of the Guardian and its Sunday sister the Observer have become riven with tensions over the perennial problem of trans rights. WhatsApp groups are ablaze with talk that Observer commentator Sonia Sodha could become the next feminist hounded out of the group, following Suzanne Moore’s purging in November.

Poor Sonia.

PronounssheRa · 09/07/2021 16:54

Oh, FFS

BaronMunchausen · 09/07/2021 17:04

"One Guardian feminista tells Steerpike: 'What does it tell you when that they go after a woman over this, but steer clear of the man who actually edits the Observer [Paul Webster]?"

In other news, Owen Jones's stance on women's rights has received the support of Witchfinder General, Matthew Hopkins.

Burn the witch!!

MrsOvertonsWindow · 09/07/2021 17:10

Just reinforces how right I was to cancel my subscription. I occasionally take a look at an article (and take great pleasure in their fretful messages - you've read 28 articles this year !! ). Yes I have idiots - and I'd still be paying for them if you understood the basic tenets of free speech.

HecatesCatsInFancyHats · 09/07/2021 17:14

Solidarity with Sonia Sodha, who writes good honest sense.

MellieBellie · 09/07/2021 17:18

Does anyone have an archived version? I've read all of my free articles. Thanks.

Also, solidarity with Sonia. I was watching her on tv yesterday and she's very thoughtful and articulate I think that would be the last straw for me as far as The Guardian goes. I don't subscribe because of their poor coverage of womens issues. If Sonia is pushed out, I'll be deleting the app and splashing out on a subscription elsewhere.

MaudTheInvincible · 09/07/2021 17:21

The graun lost another 2% circulation year on year, to May 2021. Down to less than 109k now.

ArtemesiaK · 09/07/2021 17:24

I wish I had a subscription so I could cancel it! My partner does, but I don't feel that I can ask him (I could tell him, though!).... Is there another newspaper I could recommend to him? He's a feminist ally (he'd better be...)

TerfWar · 09/07/2021 17:30

Poor little OJ, how can he bring himself to take the Guardian Group's paycheques?

Oh wait...

MellieBellie · 09/07/2021 17:36

Found the archived version for those of us without subscriptions.

I cancelled my subscription and convinced my dad to cancel his too - and he had subscribed/been a regular reader for 50 ish years.

KohlaParasanda · 09/07/2021 17:44

I'm a long time Guardian subscriber and took out a Times subscription last year to avoid getting too comfortable in my left of centre echo chamber and to try to understand why the things that mattered to me were not the things that mattered to most of the electorate. How things change.

I would hate to see Sonia Sodha go, although skilled and insightful writing will always find an outlet.

If Sonia Sodha is forced out, how long will Susanna Rustin last?

lanadelgrey · 09/07/2021 18:04

As the piece says, the guardian and observer have different editors. I would imagine the observer and Sonia Sodha could do with some supportive emails for having carved out a different path from the one laid down by diktats by guardian columnists.

dyslek · 09/07/2021 18:08

The Guardian is a joke. Has been for quite a few years now. I dont think I even know anyone who reads it anymore.
They are going after the american market, who they are relying on being think. They really dont give a toss that the brits have seen through their bullshit.

dyslek · 09/07/2021 18:10

Nieve youngsters, posh thick fashionistas and yanks who want to get laid in brooklin.

Pathetic really. The victims of Peterloo must be turning in thair graves.

Flugbusterbackagain · 09/07/2021 18:14

I don't really understand this. The Guardian still has GC writers, Hadley Freeman still writes for them? She wrote a column supporting Chimamanda Adichie a few weeks ago. Or is it cause she doesn't write for the Observer?

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 09/07/2021 18:15

The desperation of some executives to keep Jones, who is already making lucrative sums from his Patreon account, from walking out is thought to be a factor in the apparent absence of any public rebuke from his editors.

They’re desperate to keep Owen Jones? Blimey. Ok, so we have a man taking advantage of his position of power to try to get women silenced for being feminists….

ArabellaScott · 09/07/2021 18:18

Sonia Flowers

CardinalLolzy · 09/07/2021 18:24

Sonia Sodha writes far too balanced and sensible articles. The Graun are lucky to have her.

AtrociousCircumstance · 09/07/2021 18:26

The Guardian silences women’s voices.

So fucking disappointing, but there it is. I avoid now whereas it used to be my go-to news source.

Random789 · 09/07/2021 18:26

On the point of cancelling my Guardian supporter status because of this. Not because they disagree with me, but because of the sheer intellectual dishonesty and cultivated stupidity that is involved in their stance.

That Sonia Sodha editorial was the mildest possible statement of the rights of gender critical women to free speech. It was hemmed in with bolted-on 'faults on both sides' phrases that had presumably been included as a sop to the gender ideologists. If the Guardian can't even cope with something as anodyne as that, they have just abandoned their 'facts are sacred' heritage.

Fuck them, they can go to the wolves of advert-distorted journalism. It's no worse than the male-privilege journalism that they seem to favour these days.

Worrying if they see Jones as such an asset. Even plenty of lefties think he's a twerp.

I suppose his divisive twitter missives drum up plenty of outrage and publicity though.

Jones articles get clicks thats how they measure success/popularity
MellieBellie · 09/07/2021 18:48

I sent Sonia a supportive email to say thank you. Either way, I think I'm done with the Guardian. As a PP said, it's not that they disagree with my views, it's the fact that they are throwing good journalistic practices out of the window in service of an illogical and fundamentally dishonest ideology.

I also seriously question the judgement of any organisation that believes that a misogynist like OJ is an asset to their organisation.
