"Emma Corrin is embracing a “new” and “intimate” journey as she reveals she has bought her first binder"

Article in the independent (sorry behind a paywall) about Emma who played the young Princess Di in 'The Crown'. Emma is also discussing this on her Instagram page (650k followers) highlighting where she buys hers from (gc:2b).

It seems never ending.

This downplay on the side effects of binders. My own teen telling me they are just the corsets of the new age, not harmful at all.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 06/07/2021 13:35

It all just seems so attention seeking with no thought to the effect on younger people.

Apologies as it's a fail link but there's more here- photo shoots, past social media posts in a wedding dress captioned 'ur fave queer bride'.

It just feels so 'look at me'.

Because corsets never did any harm! 😂

It's such an easy way to get attention and praise isn't it. And then any of us who are horrified at the harm caused by breast binders are labelled bigots.

ThursdayWeld · 06/07/2021 13:39

I don't see the harm.

It's probably no tighter than a sports bra for running.

OvaHere · 06/07/2021 13:41

Is this just binders as a fashion statement then? The picture in the Telegraph link appears to be binding nothing, it's being worn like a loose fitting crop top.

Honestly it seems like it's just a statement to make for Instagram whilst ignoring the ways in which binders are harmful (if worn as intended).

saltedcaramelchocolate · 06/07/2021 13:41

Sad to see the photos described as being stunning in the Mail. The comments aren't falling for it though.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 06/07/2021 13:43

I’ve just had a look at the Instagram post. I can’t believe the sycophantic fawning.

It’s absolutely terrifying.

Aprilinspringtimeshower · 06/07/2021 13:46

It's really horrible. And yes I really do think attention seeking. Just in a really horrible way.

Binders can crack ribs and inhibit breathing. To the extent even those who advocate for them advise against exercising in them and to not go outside in the sun in them. Amd issue advice to schools re adapting pe lessons to accomoadate them. They can damage breast tissue aswell which I believe is riskier if they developed breast cancer as the affected tissue may well be damaged/broken apart a bit and therefore harder to remove.

Really not something that anyone should be endorsing.

“We used boxing wrap, thanks for capturing this with me, very intimate, very new, very cool. It's all a journey right. Lots of twists and turns and change and that's ok! Embrace it.” *

It looks like for the photo shoot she used boxing wrap but has now moved onto proper binders from this company. I wonder if she is getting paid for the advertising.

*. She said in her Instagram post she uses binders from gc2b, which describes itself as “the very first gender-affirming apparel company that is trans-owned and operated”.

@ThursdayWeld, if only that were true. I believe I read that they cause permanent damage in 80% of their users

They're awful things. What a way to make young girls hate their bodies even more. Can't we encourage acceptance and love for their bodies? I bloody well understand why a teenage girl wouldn't feel love for their body- I really didn't- as a woman I want to do anything I can to help girls and women be proud of who they are. This is how I want my daughter to feel.

Why the hell can't Emma Corrin keep it to herself- what business is it of anyone else's? Attention seeking. Pure and simple attention seeking around a hot topic.

What an appalling thing to do to yourself.

Siblingquandary · 06/07/2021 13:58

She seems to be in love with herself.

WomaninBoots · 06/07/2021 14:00

"""Her account also displays her pronouns as “she/they”.""""

From the Telegraph article. Shock surely "Their account...." then? Lolz.

megletthesecond · 06/07/2021 14:01

"Don't want to appear feminine". So me and my ballerina boobs aren't feminine then.

Sports bra's are much kinder than binders. That thing is just squashing her chest. Sports bras are designed to hold the chest snug and reduce bounce.

theThreeofWeevils · 06/07/2021 14:01

'Actor is attention-seeking nincompoop' is scarcely news Grin

WomaninBoots · 06/07/2021 14:02

Also the picture sure is sexualising THEM in the way the media like to sexualise WOMEN isn't it? So clearly we all can still identify a women when we need a sexy picture.

Whatwouldscullydo · 06/07/2021 14:03

Also strange how there's a very real divide I this non binary stuff. One group of people its just blue hair and an orange tutu . The other group, well its binders and mastectomies. Seems everyone k less avjut sec their 2 as there's only one that's harmed physically by it

helloclue.com/articles/cycle-a-z/chest-binding-tips-and-tricks-for-trans-men-nonbinary-and-genderfluid

Two studies have been completed that focus specifically on people who bind. They were cross-sectional studies, observing a specific population (people who chest bind) at a specific point in time, and were published in 2017 and 2018. Both of these studies are based on data from 1,800 responders to an online survey.

Across both studies, the majority of people (89-97%) reported experiencing at least one negative symptom from chest binding (2,3).

Common side effects of chest binding
76-78% of people in studies reported skin/tissue problems, like tenderness, scarring, swelling, itching, infections
74-75% of people reported pain in chest, shoulders, back or abdomen
51-52% of people reported respiratory problems (like shortness of breath)
47-49% of people reported musculoskeletal symptoms, like postural changes, muscle wasting, or rib fractures (2,3)
