Aibu that the reputation of fwr being 'unsafe'

TheSlayer · 28/06/2021 20:55

I've been a member of Mumsnet for about a year now. Came on Sen and got lots of good, though straightforward advice. I've had no one sugar coated D's Sen and played it down as 'all babies are different'. No lack of empathy there though.
I post on fwr and have had things get heated, but generally the debate is polite. With the exception of a few regulars even the dissenting voices were civil.
However, every single time I post on aibu I get absolute venom. For really innocent posts.

So it usually goes.
Aibu- oranges and lemons say the bells of at. Clements.
Yabvu - I don't like that song. I don't have time.
Yabvu- have you thought about all the people who live in London and have to put up with that song.
Yabvu- what about pears op. Bigot.
It's St. Clements op. Educate yourself.

I mean, don't bite my head off, but I actually think it's a lot more civilized in this neck of the woods.

The level intellect on this board is pretty high, I'd say! Not including myself Grin I learn loads though.

ArabellaScott · 28/06/2021 21:00

Shhh, Slayer, you'll be ruining our reputation. Most fearsome round here. Horrible.

OhHolyJesus · 28/06/2021 21:03

Pretty much sums up why I stick around here and don't venture into AIBU that much, but we are the mean girls over here and must stay in our lane hidden corner with cobwebs so other social media platforms can pretend we don't exist or people get upset. Very, very upset.

I agree, I consider FWR to be quite high brow.

I often wonder who the names and faces behind the usernames are (and what their qualifications and experiences are).

TheSlayer · 28/06/2021 21:05

I do learn a lot here. And I don't claim intellectual superiority. But people are rarely mean here. Heated, yes. Mean, no.
I just think it's funny fwr has this reputation but aibu is absolutely mean.
I have severe depression and twice it's sent me over the edge here.
Can we have a groceries, babies, pets, life etc. Section of fwr where I can ask a non feminist related question without getting my head bitten off by the aibu meanies?
I need to not go over there. It's so aggressive.

MsFogi · 28/06/2021 21:06

Only sadists post in AIBU.

ArabellaScott · 28/06/2021 21:10

'high brow' in the sense that you read stuff that makes your eyebrows go Shock?

Flowers for the depression, Slayer. Maybe best avoiding some of the more confrontational boards. I think 'Chat' is supposed to be gentler. Not sure about the pet boards

TheSlayer · 28/06/2021 21:17

Thanks for the Flowers and the chat tip.
To be honest I just need to scuttle back to the corners of fwr and Sen.

AIBU is fight club.

Maybe HQ should put up a pop up warning whenever newbies try to post in AIBU to warn them that they may like to choose another topic.

I like an AIBU bun fight, but some poor posters don't seem to know what they're getting themselves into.

yourhairiswinterfire · 28/06/2021 21:18

God, AIBU can be brutal. Some replies to completely inoffensive OP's make me wince!

I don't blame you for avoiding it, even watching someone else take an absolute hammering is draining, can't imagine what it's like being on the receiving end.

Hope you're doing good at the moment?

Garraty47 · 28/06/2021 21:19

And the pet boards are lovely, especially Litter tray. As long as you're not a breeder or trying to buy an expensive pet.

somethinginoffensive · 28/06/2021 21:22

I first came to Mumsnet through AIBU, people were posting links to crazy threads, and it is brutal but refreshing at the same time. I learned some great sweary phrases, found women incredibly supportive of those who need it, and ended up here in the polite but firm bit.

ScreamingMeMe · 28/06/2021 21:22

I absolutely agree. I find AIBU entertaining, but geez people can be downright nasty in there at times.

TheSlayer · 28/06/2021 21:25

I have rescue rabbits, bit they're taking a backseat to Ds ATM. 🙂
I'm having a bit of a hard time coping with Ds diagnosis, but plodding on. My depression is related to it so it's difficult.
I do use Mumsnet as a bit of an escape and do need to cut down, but I often find myself drawn here during naps and things.

A disclaimer would be a great idea. I've honestly been made to feel like I'm worse than a nazi mass murderer over on aibu. (I'm not, although that'd be a good aibu)

or masochists

I wouldn't go near AIBU, it's vicious over there

I highly recommend style and beauty too ~just don't post about Roman Originals~ and the Christmas bargain threads are my happy place

TheSlayer · 28/06/2021 21:31

I'm afraid I have zero style so definitely wouldn't fit in there.
The nineties called and want their wardrobe back, but they said I can keep the Disney clobber 😂

Ekofisk · 28/06/2021 21:33

My first ever MN post was a reply on AIBU.

Fortunately I covered all bases by saying “yes, no, perhaps sometimes”.

littlbrowndog · 28/06/2021 21:33

It’s cool here

Just that cool as fuck

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/06/2021 21:34

To be fair, FWR is unsafe if you find facts that disagree with your ideology to be literal violence...

Well if you must insist on having a loo brush in your house 😂

Only joking, yes FWR is mostly very respectful and kind. AIBU is just people enjoying making others feel like shit x

TheSlayer · 28/06/2021 21:38

I was also doing a little lurking on another part of the site where a regular (one of the few I've actually had be mean here) was slagging this board off left, right and centre.
I'd have defended it but I could see that would have been pile on suicide.
They did say we must hate Meghan Markle as one of the more trivial points. I actually quite like her (but not the latest babyname, sorry!)
