Nini made it to the Olympics!

The IWF sent her an invitation so she can come compete.
I feel this is them admitting that their rules are unfair to women.
And it does mean another athlete missed out on her discretionary invitation but we don't know who she is so can't make a big hoohah about it.

Wow, that’s amazing news!! So glad she will be able to compete

LizziesTwin · 25/06/2021 20:27

So pleased to hear this.

Crazy it has come to this however, I guess they want it to go quiet.

WotgunShedding · 25/06/2021 20:32

It doesn’t alter the fact that another woman has been denied an opportunity to compete though - the woman who would’ve got the triparte invitation if they hadn’t needed to use it on Nini has now missed out.

Hoping4second · 25/06/2021 20:38

@WotgunShedding I know right. And because it's discretionary we've got no way of knowing who missed out, so there will be no campaign to publicise her name and her story.

The f*ckers know exactly what they're doing.

Good for Nini though, she sounds like an inspirational athlete.

Will they be doing this every single time a trans woman takes the place of an actual woman athlete?

MouseyTheVampireSlayer · 25/06/2021 20:42

I'm glad she's getting to go.
But it should not have been necessary.

WanderinWomb · 25/06/2021 20:48

Good for her and good for us kicking up a stink .

It shows that IOC realised that the public worldwide are watching very carefully. It should never have come to this and this won't distract me , I won't stop until we make sure it never ever happens again.

WanderinWomb · 25/06/2021 20:51

Well damn that was moved quickly.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 25/06/2021 20:53

Excellent news! Go Nini - women the world over are rooting for you.

AfternoonToffee · 25/06/2021 20:54

Fantastic news. Go Nini.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/06/2021 20:54

My mum will be pleased. She's almost 80 and doesn't comment on this a lot but she was really angry (spitting in her words) about this.

BlackeyedSusan · 25/06/2021 20:58

so pleased for Nini.

WotgunShedding · 25/06/2021 21:02

Two (2) quota places per gender will be allocated according to the Tripartite Commission Invitation and they are made available to eligible NOCs at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

(It’s from a bit of a random article though www.triathlon.org/news/article/tokyo_2020_olympic_games_tripartite_commission_invitation_places )

The tripartite invitations are limited in number so while it’s fantastic news for Nini, the injustice remains - another woman has been pushed out.

These are the official Olympic rules for tripartite invitations if anyone can make sense of them:

Whatwouldscullydo · 25/06/2021 21:03

Go Nini!!

That place was always rightfully yours

WarriorN · 25/06/2021 21:08

Fantastic!

NiceGerbil · 25/06/2021 21:10

The date of that article is 2019 though OP.

And I can't find anything on Google.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 25/06/2021 21:12

Where is the announcement? I can't find it - is it in NZ/Samoan media?

WotgunShedding · 25/06/2021 21:16

This is from Twitter (so take the necessary quantities of salt)

Nini made it to the Olympics!
quiteathome · 25/06/2021 21:21

Wouldn't it be amazing if she won.

WanderinWomb · 25/06/2021 21:27

@quiteathome

Wouldn't it be amazing if she won.
I think that's highly unlikely but I imagine the roars and cheers of support for Munumua are going to bring a tear to my eye. I know this in advance.
PennineSpring · 25/06/2021 21:39

Well this is an interesting turn. There must be considerable pressure on the IOC now. There’s been pressure on national bodies for a while now who have all hid behind the IOC policy and turned for them for help but now the theoretical has happened, I bet none of them like the attention one bit.
And those sports with a transwoman athlete quietly working towards the next high profile event might just be feeling a bit twitchy now.

Ekofisk · 25/06/2021 21:45

I put this on a different thread, but thought it might be helpful here:

It is a bit of a fudge, but the process is there to be used.

Tripartite invitations give small countries that traditionally only send a small number of athletes an opportunity to include more participants, so Tonga qualifies on that count.

There are invitational places in 16 sports, which includes weightlifting (4 invitational places available for women).

The IOC reserves the right to accept late nominations (original closing date was in Jan 2019 but that was pre Covid).

I would think that the Tonga NOC got an application in smartish to ensure Nini didn’t lose her place.

I don’t know if all 4 women’s places will end up being allocated, so there may or may not be another woman left out because of Hubbard.

NiceGerbil · 25/06/2021 21:47

I've tried to look at the IWF website but I'm finding it difficult to navigate.

Anyone else want to try?

Nothing obvious there about this.

NiceGerbil · 25/06/2021 21:53

I also can't find competitor info on the main Olympics site.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 25/06/2021 22:51

That is good news.
Are they going to have to make lots of extra places in the future so no women miss out?
