I was so excited to see real ribbons on a real tree in Brighton as I was visiting today. Whoever put them there - thank you. You have cheered me immensely, and made me feel less alone.

Yay!
I always wonder if anyone notices my stickers & ribbons as the only ones I see are mine (well other than the person who regularly removes one sticker in particular as I have to keep replacing that one Grin)

OT but thank you theThree an old fashioned haberdashery is a joy to browse

PoppyFern · 20/06/2021 17:11

@BigPyjamas

Anyone know where I can buy suffrage ribbon? Google yielded only options at £20 a reel
I got mine at the haberdashers in town.

About 60p a metre each

SpindleWhorl · 20/06/2021 17:13

I see your literal violence, and I raise you literal violets

Do the suffragette green and purple have particular hexadecimal codes?

Congressdingo · 20/06/2021 17:19

Ohh thethree, fabulous looking shop there. I shall buy ribbons for hateful haberdashery and Christmas. Need ideas now of how to pose ribbons and then where to put them, there's cameras galore round my way. And I don't want to be arrested.

Whatthechicken · 20/06/2021 17:34

Mine were noticed and they got posted on the local FB group by a resident asking what they were. Had a lot of women liking it and no negative comments. Because of them though I have met a fellow GC woman, which was nice.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 20/06/2021 17:52

@theThreeofWeevils

Or if rather than Amazon or the rather overpriced Hobbycraft, you would rather support an independent business, Fred's have a good range of everything you could possibly want in terms of haberdashery ribbon

www.freds-haberdashery.co.uk

No connection with the business, but a great friend who lives in Chesterfield adores them. I hope to visit the shop one day Smile

I do like independent shops!

Can anyone find actual spools/reel of plain coloured ribbon on there? I can only find ribbon per metre.

IAmAWomanNotACis · 20/06/2021 18:01

Oh I am so glad this is a thing!

The only thing is I'm fairly sure this will cause some people to think that the suffragette colours and message are poisoned Sad

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 20/06/2021 18:02

The usual suspects already decided that, on twitter.

They keep whining about how feminists have "appropriated" the colours.

SpindleWhorl · 20/06/2021 18:06

If anyone's a bit strapped for cash, the Range do rolls of ribbon for a quid, some of which are 10 - 20m so good for getting started.

If anyone's genuinely worried about getting arrested or otherwise in trouble eg with work, you can decorate a tree, gate or statue, photograph it, and take the ribbon down. No vandalism, no intent. You have the photo, however, forever.

Oh god the absolute irony!
skeletonkey · 20/06/2021 18:09

@Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons yes, it is encouraging. I had thought of doing it but wasn’t sure they would be noticed. Now I know there’s someone else who might appreciate them, I won’t feel like I’m shouting into a void. And how lovely, @Whatthechicken, to meet fellow travellers.

“appropriated” the colours, @PurgatoryOfPotholes? That’s hilarious.

Nice independant haberdashery

It's similar to a certain person who was accused of appropriating the word woman
ArabellaScott · 20/06/2021 18:37

Yes, feminists have appropriated the suffragettes.

TRAs were cross, before they remembered they didn't like the suffragettes, anyway. But the feminists were still wrong, because they are women, and women are always wrong.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 20/06/2021 18:56

I thought the TRAs were cross because we'd all travelled in time to appropriate the "genderqueer" flag for the suffragettes or something Hmm can't argue with stupid...

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 20/06/2021 19:03

Well, you see, the argument is that the "suffragettes fought for equality" and so would all hate us, as we are standing in the way of certain people having "equal access" to our single sex hospital wards, prisons, communal changing rooms and toilets.

Me, I don't think the average Edwardian suffragette, with all they knew of prison (having been sentenced for fighting for women's rights!) would have entertained the idea for a minute that she or her fellow suffragettes should have to share a prison cell with someone born male!

Waitwhat23 · 20/06/2021 19:04

@Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons thank you - I was trying to remember what batshittery the TRA's were saying about the colours being to do with one of their flags and not the suffragettes. Nonsensical time travelling about covers it.

RickiTarr · 20/06/2021 19:04

I can’t find any on EBay. Hopefully for the best of reasons. I’d prefer the tricolour stuff because I have to do my 1am agitating one handed due to using a stick. If anyone finds any would they mind PMing me or posting a link? Cheers.

I pre-tie mine together at the top and pre- loop it so it just has to be popped on and pulled tight iyswim?
Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 20/06/2021 19:08

Grin Purgatory I haven't seen that one, it's possibly madder than the genderqueer version Grin

I've been told the suffragettes were awful complaining privileged c*shet white women Grin

Oh yes that could work. I’ll go at midnight and take the dog as cover. Smile

toffeebutterpopcorn · 20/06/2021 19:24

My sister has horsies and she sometimes does the fancy braiding in their tailed and manes... I think I’ll get her some pretty ribbons for her horsies...

I bought 3 different colours from Ebay for just a few quid. I've already tied a few locally.

I'm in Sussex so might have to take a trip to Brighton.
