The Royal Academy have removed Jess' work from their shop due to a handful of complaints that she's 'transphobic'. If you want to support Jess her website is here.

So sick of these utterly craven organisations. I hope she has a legal case against them for discrimination.

Oh please can we have the "education" on human biology? We were promised one a couple of weeks ago but as far as I know the poster never came back to teach us.

TedImgoingmad · 21/06/2021 20:55

RaindropsOnRosie
The way you all jumped to defend yourselves is very telling. If you're not using it as a cover, you have nothing to worry about! Very silly.

The only thing that's silly is how desperate you are. The whole nation can see that the Emperor is naked. "Transphobia" is so overused as to be virtually meaningless. It covers anything TRAs want it to cover, including my cat looking at you funny. Shouting "transphobia" doesn't work any more. People aren't going to simply shut up anymore. Get over it.

"People like JK Rowling are not cancellable, and that makes the people who hate them so angry. In a way, I’m not cancellable either, because I don’t give a fuck. What the fuck are they going to do? They keep putting rocks in my way and I’m making a fucking statue out of them. I don’t care. I’m not going to have arseholes make my life miserable just because they are miserable."

Ha ha ha. Go Jess

LizzieSiddal · 21/06/2021 20:59

Apparently, Michael Cashman has been complaining that nobody has been willing to debate this matter.
Well he needs to go and ask Stonewall, Mermaids etc why their mantra for four years has been No Debate.

How come he doesn’t know this, or is he being disingenuous. Hmm

LizzieSiddal · 21/06/2021 21:00

They keep putting rocks in my way and I’m making a fucking statue out of them.

That is so fucking powerful!

NecessaryScene · 21/06/2021 21:01

Bloody hypocrite.

To be fair, this Katy person is totally new to me, and it sounded from what others were saying that they've previously been fairly reasonable. I'm not sure they're personally hypocritical. If they want to join in as a trans spokesperson, maybe that's for the good.

Apparently, Michael Cashman has been complaining that nobody has been willing to debate this matter. Another hypocrite.

But if Michael "No Debate" Cashman is saying something like that with a straight face, he can fuck right off, the hypocritical tosser.

Apparently, Michael Cashman has been complaining that nobody has been willing to debate this matter.

Barrister Naomi Cunningham has an open invitation to a debate to any lawyer who will accept:

I’m driven to the conclusion that even those who espouse the non-GC view vociferously – whether inTwitter spats, blog posts or lengthy, heavily-footnoted journal articles – know at some level that their position is indefensible.

I’m a decent enough lawyer, but there are plenty better. I know what it is to be intimidated by the intellectual fire-power on the other side. Nevertheless I wholeheartedly relish the prospect of this debate: I am fearless of anyone, however distinguished or brilliant they may be, because I am so sure of my ground. The opposing positions are so riddled with logical fallacies, circular arguments and flat-out idiocies that none of my gender uncritical colleagues – not one single one of them – has the stomach for trying to defend them publicly in friendly rational dialogue with me. Moreover, the big beasts of legal Twitter whom I approached seemed not merely not to want to take part in the argument themselves: they didn’t want to do anything to help it to take place.

Another piece in the Guardian.
www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2021/jun/21/artist-jess-de-wahls-considers-suing-royal-academy-in-transphobia-row

They managed to get Tatchell to comment who spectacularly misses the point. Says that if Jess denied the identity of Jewish or black artists there would be up roar. Might be missing a small detail there Peter. I suspect non black artists identifying as black artists might just get their arse handed to them on a plate.

NecessaryScene · 21/06/2021 21:14

Here Jess is on GBNews. (Less fun than The Mess We're In though.)

Is it just me, or is GBNews turning out to be great? Some of these stories must be a bit of a culture shock for all the TV viewers who've not been hanging out on Twitter! Grin

Ooh, are we going to get an "education" on human biology? I love this sort of thing!
Oh me too! Can’t wait to see how a male pelvis changes into a female pelvis - I mean if humans really could change sex, that would happen wouldn’t it?

Isn't she? I know she doesn't want to be a spokesperson, but my goodness, I'd pay to hear her speak. So funny, engaging and intelligent, and clearly doesn't give any fucks about being in the good graces of the people attacking her. So talented too, I love her art. And - well I know this shouldn't matter, but - she's beautiful. That will be getting the backs up of the brigade who think all GC women are ugly, bitter failures who are jealous of the "brave and stunning".

Cleebope2 · 21/06/2021 21:28

Thanks for links , have joined her newsletter and complained to academy. Disgusted by this and the Lauren Hubbard news today. It’s a farce.

TedImgoingmad · 21/06/2021 21:30

Not just you, NecessaryScene, I've been watching quite a few GB news clips on Youtube, and they have all been really well considered pieces, nothing like Fox News, to which they've been compared pejoratively.

NecessaryScene · 21/06/2021 21:36

if Jess denied the identity of Jewish or black artists there would be up roar

What form would that "denial of identity" take in this hypothetical scenario, I wonder?

He should be more specific about what comparison he thinks he's making. Partly because I'm not sure he's thought it through properly.

Cailleach1 · 21/06/2021 21:43

With all this talk of transformation ability (which is really credible for anyone who has ever studied biology), I don't know why some of these surrogate hiring males don't just transform into women to have their wanted baby and then just change back.

Just like that!

JustcameoutGC · 21/06/2021 22:04

Been thinking about how Jess must be in the middle of this. She clearly chose a few years back to be clear on where her feminism lay. Given the nature of her art I can see why she felt she had to make such a statement openly.

It is equally clear that this was about her life and her art, she was not seeking to become a spokesperson for GC feminism. She protected herself by ceasing to work with partners, who she knew would be targeted and carried on making art. But when the RA comes calling, you don't say no, and you would hope they would be a bit more resistant to social media static than small businesses.

Then, they create this social media shit storm, call her a transphobe to their 0.5m followers and walk away. They have a CEO, a board, a social media team, comms & PR people, the works.

Jess is a lone artist. No big team around her. No deep pockets and no peppercorn rent I bet. It seems like she is made of pretty stern stuff, but what if looks are deceiving or what if she wasn't. Many could not withstand this sudden shove into the limelight.

This is such an irresponsible thing to do. So easy to virtue signal a person to death and then just swan off.

As well as an apology they need to pay for some counselling and some PR support for Jess. This cannot have been easy for her.

Completely agree. She's made of strong stuff but this weight must be crushing.

I hope she takes heart in how many people are supporting her.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 21/06/2021 22:45

Good to hear women recognising the weight on a lone artist of all this JustcameoutGC . For a massive institution to target a lone artist this way is unforgivable.
I was very pleased to see such sustained support for her, not just here but below the line in so many press reports about this.

Regarding GBNews it's been bloody brilliant - there was a massive gaping hole that the BBC, Sky and ITV wouldn't touch. Today just dipping in and out I've seen Miranda Yardley, Emma Hilton and now Jess. And the best thing is it will make other media cover it too.

Indeed. The true comparison is a black artist saying that a white person who braids their hair and darkens their skin isn’t actually black.

This is actually a scenario that has played out, eg Rachel Dolezal, and the consensus is that she isn’t black and can’t become black or be treated as if she were black.

@OvaHere

Apparently, Michael Cashman has been complaining that nobody has been willing to debate this matter.

Simon Fanshawe has been asking for a few years now and presumably they know each other fairly well as two Stonewall founders.

I was on twitter the day Baroness Nicholson asked if she could meet with him to have a discussion.

She said: "Dear Michael,
Would you like a meeting to see if we can bury our presumed differences? I’d be delighted,
Yours,
Emma"

He said: We have nothing in common. You have inflicted such damage and harm.
