Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Are there any medical doctors or scientists publicly commenting on the sex/gender debate?

Understandably there probably isn’t much to debate for them - sex is as per chromosomes that can’t be changed and gender is of less relevance to sex in any area of scientific interest.

But I’ve been thinking we could do with some of them speaking out to this effect? Can anyone point me in their direction?

Or, equally, are there any scientists/doctors being vocal on the TRA side or arguing that gender is more important than sex? I suppose there’s the Gender GP people...

Colin Wright (biologist) has said he's been asked to do a paper along the lines of "humans are binary sexed animals". Grin

This wasn't previously felt necessary, so there aren't any foundational papers on the topic in the literature...

Dr Emma Hilton (@fondofbeetles)

Prof Lord Robert Winston said lots of excellent stuff on sexual reproduction at the HoL debate recently. The one on terminology to be used in the maternity bill for parliamentarians

On the other side, Prof Alice Roberts.

The members of segm.org.

Including Dr Will Malone, Roberto D’Angelo, Stella O’Malley.

SilverGlassHare · 13/06/2021 19:25

I work with research and clinical gynaecologists and obstetricians, and they know all the score but up til now have been very circumspect because they didn’t want to be cancelled by their institutions.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 13/06/2021 19:25

On the gender side you have Dr Harrop and Dr Jessen.

SilverGlassHare · 13/06/2021 19:28

And Alice Roberts has fully drunk the koolaid, but it’s weird because if you read any of her popular science anthropology books, she describes various early hominid skeletons as male or female depending on comparative size and muscle attachment and pelvis shape etc. But modern humans can change sex apparently.

Leafstamp · 13/06/2021 19:29

Thanks for names - some reading for me to do there.

Thanks too for the insight Silver, I can see how that would be the case
As everyone has been saying re MF case, hopefully more people with influence and who are well respected will start speaking up a bit more re biology being important.

The mind really boggles doesn’t it?!

There's a couple of very interesting interviews with Dr Will Malone on the Boyce of reason...

Avocadowoman · 13/06/2021 19:40

Margaret McCartney (GP also does radio) is on the ‘sex is real and can’t be changed side).

Susan Bewley, I think also.

NecessaryScene · 13/06/2021 19:45

Yeah, you'll find a whole stack of medical and psychological people on Benjamin's playlist:

And also a fair few turn up Sasha Ayad and Stella O'Malley's podcast:

It's also worth checking out the people speaking up about the Tavistock. Particularly Dr David Bell:

Check out this thread - a lot of video links there, including to the Newsnight reports coming out of the Tavistock.

I knew this would be the right place to ask! Thanks everyone. I’m quite new to the debate if I’m honest, but I have a thirst for knowledge and I’m a fast learner Grin

I’m already impressed with Emma Hilton’s Twitter feed.

Emma did a brilliant Twitter thread - haven't got a link to the original, but here it is in web form:

Not quite what you asked op but when Dr jenny harries was asked a question about "pregnant people" in a covid briefing recently her answer included the words "pregnant women" three or four times. I felt it was emphasised.

heathspeedwell · 13/06/2021 20:02

Emma Hilton is brilliant and also very charismatic. I hope she becomes a regular on our tv screens in the future.

Leafstamp · 13/06/2021 20:03

Ah yes, I have seen that before Necessary. Thanks for reminding me.

I can feel a Leafstamp Feminism Filing System coming on. I’d like to be able to remember all these things and to refer back to them.

These two women are excellent.

Dr McCartney is a GP, and Dr Bewley is an Obstetrician and Gynecologist - a professor too, I think, and very focused on improving women's healthcare. Dr Bewley also utterly schooled some arrogant little shit junior doctor on twitter when he pretended not to know that sex was binary. Turned out, she'd taught him in O&G, it was glorious.

I think both are involved with SEGM, which quietly and respectfully doing some very important work on this.

It all helps.

And this is the thing - if I imagine having a conversation with a Jenny Harries/Chris Whitty type, I just can’t imagine them supporting that gender is more important than sex.

Dr Helen Webberley (on the Gender side) but she is currently suspended from the GMC register, pending a hearing into her conduct by the MPTS.
